    Wiring is one of those areas that a lot of people put off, ignore or simply hate doing when it comes to modifying cars. There’s no doubt that wiring problems are responsible for a large part of the problems we see with poor running, poor tuneability and general reliability issues, yet approached correctly it’s actually pretty simple for an average enthusiast to do a great job wiring an ecu without spending a fortune in specialist tools. I’m Andre from the High Performance Academy and you’re watching the third part of our Project Panhard series detailing the planning, wiring, configuration and tuning of a Toyota 86 that’s been fitted with a 1UZFE VVTi Toyota v8 engine.

    While I don't solder anything anymore, the FAA teaches all mechanics to solder all pinouts / bulkhead fittings etc. Its actually in Corsair Maintenance booklets when I worked on airplanes. Believe it or not, Solder was actually part of my practical exam for the Airframe License in 1989. Anyway, Wiring is crucial in autosports, and I am glad more and more people take it serious.

    Would love to see even more in depth videos about how to create a wiring harness! That being said this is already probably the best series I've ever watched! Keep up the good work!

      It's coming! We've got an old new guy #ducksforcover named Zac who's part of the team now and our resident wiring guru. He is overhauling our existing Wiring Fundamentals course, and then creating 2 new ones just to start with that will show you how to create your own custom loom for a street application, and then also a motorsport application. I'm excited!
      In the meantime keep an eye on our Instagram feed as he's been putting a lot of little tech notes on there ;) - Taz.

    Never seen concentric wiring before, think I'll give it a go when rewiring my 30 year old Africa Twin motorbike as I have a fair bit of wiring to redo as some of the original terminals have corroded and broken off. Usually I just rewire and use hockey stick tape or nylon braided sleeving and heat shrink. A concentric loom should work well and I can add the additional circuits I need for power socket/charge socket, security, lighting and navigation.

      30 years eh, you must have one of the 650cc versions? They certainly have a reputation of being great bikes and I can imagine it would be due a bit of love in the wiring department by now.
      We are going to cover concentric twisting later this year in a more advanced wiring course. If you would like to you can email me and mention that you would like to hear about it on release and I'll make sure I get an email to you at the time: support@hpacademy.com
      If that's a bit late for your timeframe then I would still be interested to hear how you get on with the project. A motorbike is a great vehicle to cut your teeth on with this I feel 😎- Taz.

    What are the specs on the printable heat shrink? Standard shrink with normal label maker, or is that a specific product and special printer?

    Where can I find the full rewiring video of the harness? These bit tips do not help with my learning process

    Where did you find those terminal pins? I've been looking because I'm rebuilding the engine harness for my truck. Toyota will only sell pigtails, id rather have just the terminal and put it on the new wires.

    You mentioned teflon Tape. How, why and where do you use it?

    • @Fopeano
      @Fopeano 5 років тому

      I only heard him mention Kapton tape. That is used to hold the concentrically twisted bundle together before it is covered in shrink tube. it's used every so many inches throughout the harness. The reason why it's Kapton tape is because it's extremely thin, narrow, and heat-resistant. That means there is no harm done in simply leaving it in place when the shrink tube is applied in the final stages, simplifying the build process as you don't need to remove each piece of tape as you're installing shrink tube.

    Nothing wrong with a quality solder joint, must be done either NASA method or philips method. Military use this for splices. The real problem is that a quality crimp is easy to do with the right tools, but a quality solder joint is not easily done without experience and knowledge.

      There are a bunch of wiring suppliers listed on the HPA forum. The best on for you just depends on your location, timeframe and also what other materials you might need. Check out this section here to get started: www.hpacademy.com/forum/efi-wiring-fundamentals/ - Taz.
