  • Tariq was in Tanzania recently, where he sat down with Professor Issa Shivji to discuss Tanzania’s first president Julius Nyerere, also known as ‘Mwalimu’ (Swahili for ’teacher’). Tanzania hasn’t suffered the same level of violence and political instability as its neighbors in the East Africa region and, as a result, doesn’t make as many international headlines - is this the legacy of Nyerere?

what a great conversation by two giant of left forward thinking and great reflections on Africa and the world. Tariq well done, again keep up the great work, and people should get your book 'The Extreme Center' or any of your books for that matter and your many talks and watch this program.

Caption error (18:03): "If you ALLOW multi-party, inevitably, in a country that did not have a nation: These parties will become, inevitably, some kind of ethnic groups with ethnic support." Really changes the meaning of what he's saying.

There is no an error. Nyerere like Issa are accomplished philosophers. Nyerere was an Aristotelian reductionist who built his Ujamaa political theory from "polis" (Greek-City) which by definition meant homogeneous community. A homogeneous community is called a nation. That is called ethnos in Greek to mean a nation. Therefore a nation is a people of a particular land or country. When you have 133 tribes each with it's own customs and traditions you have a county without a nation.

Thanks. A very insightful interview. Nyerere was a great man who sets a high standard for all leaders. Trump/Clinton are you watching? At last UK has a chance to break free from Neo-liberal policies with Corbyn.
