  • A follow up video on my 1992 Japanese FujiGen made Fender Stratocaster 12 String guitar. In this video luthier Brenden Mason from Real Guitars in Melbourne explains how he's gone about overcoming the neck problems that hampered the play-ability of the guitar.

Your a lucky man on two fronts. First of all to have that sweet 12 string strat and second of all to have a friend with the skill to help you out. Cheers from Boston!!!

Great video (as well as the previous Part I). I am giving serious consideration to buying a Japanese Fender XII, so this will give me a good clue as to what problems I might encounter and what to look for. This has been extremely helpful, and I love watching luthiers at work. Thanks again for posting this. It made a difference to me. Cheers!

Wow, glad to see that Brendon was able to sort out that problem for you. Whenever I see guitars which aren't really that old, such as this one, I often wonder how in the world they got into the sad condition that they are in , in the first place. I have some guitars from the mid '60s which I've never had to adjust the truss rod and the necks are still correct. Good for you, Matt. She sounds lovely. Have fun.

jltrem hi Brenden is a magician with guitars he just seems to able to pull rabbits out of hats on a regular occurrence! I know what you mean though - somebody had just cranked the truss rod on this guitar with no idea what they were doing. Nice to hear from you as always! Best Matt

Speaking of rabbits out of hats, I recently had a similar situation with an acoustic. Neck bow with too high action and truss rod seemed maxed out. I tried the method I sent you with the blocks and clamp, left it for a week but it still didn't work. I took it to Dan Shinn of Lay's Guitar Repair in Akron (plug) and told him what I'd tried. He looked at it, sighted down the neck, said "Hmm.." and took it in the back. Minutes later he brought it out, nice straight neck, nice low action. I was delighted. "What did you do??" I asked. He just looked at me and smiled slyly. He wasn't revealing any secrets.

jltrem sounds like you have some lovely guitars. If you had to pick one guitar from your collection for a desert island what would it be?

I have lots of guitars (20 and one MIA) but nothing nearly as nice as yours. I'm a mediocre player with mediocre guitars though I love them all. One of my pleasures is taking an inexpensive guitar and turning it into a nice player. As to your desert island question, I have no idea. The wife keeps talking about moving south after she retires (we're in Ohio) and I'm already worrying that I might have to thin the herd if we get a smaller house.
