All the black young people not just the ones fortunate enough to make it out of the hood ALIVE and make it to college. It’s time to truly stand together for the culture as a whole. We say Black Lives Matter but we sure aren’t operating that way. The leaders of this movement only show up when there is an ambulance to chase and a buck to be made. I enjoyed seeing Deion on 60 minutes. Never disappoints. And he put it out there in the interview that he was open for a new opportunity. No secret. I am surprised he is getting so little actually. Deion was a beast in his day. Had talent and shine! The issue is not about Deion leaving. The issue is, where are all of the other black athletes? Every retired athlete should be helping the black males in THEIR communities.

A lot of people are missing the fact that when someone with Sanders caliber is at a HBCU, those top teir student athletes are coming to HBCUs instead of PWIs. If you want better facilities, bigger endowment you need a coach prime. It was a huge threat to the order of things with him there and he got a offer for him to go to a pwi. I want to see these top teir athletes go to HBCUs without a coach prime it ain't going to happen.

If HBCU’s want better facilities and a bigger endowment…they need more students with higher SAT scores. The average SAT score of the student body at Jackson State is 930 which is well below average. But it’s of no surprise to see black folks more concerned about athletes than the fact those schools are severely underachieving academically.
It’s not going to happen anymore it’s all over the spotlight is gone.

Deion also has a staff of 12-23 coaches / football personnel that he is responsible for making sure they continue to get paid as well. Sanders futilely every promise he made on top of the fact that coaching itself is a revolving door position anyway. JSU has a legacy that will go on to add to its greatness & some of that is because of coach prime. Excited to see his next chapter.

Pros gotta eat 2. It hurts becuz now as parents of JSU student athletes we see it was all about his son being QB @ the Next Level. Deion is being disingenuous when he said today it was hard to leave because of the players. He didn’t take the rest of the fellas who bought into the music, the celebrity guest & the hype speeches. My son said Prime never coached us except for his son, but he just gave good speeches about church and life. Prime played these kids just like a southern preacher. Sad 😔 Prime Convinced these boys to come to JSU instead of the ACC & SEC programs by ingratiating the mothers & Grandma’s, then once his son gotta a better deal to perform on a bigger stage he and his son relocate to Denver..smh…Now it’s going to be hard 2 recruit players from the south because momma & grandma ain’t getting taken for a fool again. When we didn’t have clean water he put the whole team the staff and their loved ones in a hotel for days out of his pocket . He gave my cousin a chance to play after the school didn’t allow him because of his grades and gave him a scholarship to play . That man changed my cousins life he wa going down a horrible path and he shifted him and now he got a offer to play for University of Minnesota gophers ! Man you don’t know anything at all he don’t owe y’all nothing the same ppl complain about this are the same ppl who never ever donated a single dime to JSU or any hbcus . 27-5 with a couple championship in a couple seasons. Them games were sold out to the max and a article in the school came out of the tickets and the number of ppl in the stands not adding up because prime is supposed to get a 10% cut of it y’all don’t know the half of it because y’all don’t go to this school. The team go to travel because of primes realtionship with American Airlines like a power 5 private! Sponsors from barstool , afleck, under armor , etc . You know what other team in the whole nation that had more college jerseys then JSU Oregon ducks!! They had New Jersey’s almost every game day. Paid out of his pocket having their last names in the back man so the parents can be proud . Playing for the front of the name but playing for the back!! Prime used his realtionship with Michael starhan to get suits for each kid to wear on game day. Man he got the whole hbcu on college game day!!!!!! You know how big that was! He helped broke a deal with espn + 10 year to play HBcUs football 120 million dollar deal for 10 years. The school was “building” a new practice field for years they kept saying that and kept taking ppl donations but it never happened until coach prime came and he sped ts up so fast it was almost like admin was purposely not trying to do it and milk people’s donations . He used half his salary to help build the boys practice field , game day field , new locker room, new meeting room and offices for staff , also boys and girls basketball team got a new locker room. Man he did a lot. He would come preach to the girls basketball team since his daughter plays for us and sometimes even make sure the football team is supporting the girls team. A big thing that we always heard in school was coach prime staff being underpaid and admin not wanting ti pay them what prime wanted so he had to pay some of his staff out of his pocket . What type of coach does that ? That’s the schools job! He brought in lots of celebrities to shine light on JSU and talk to the team . I don’t think you understand how much a good football team can do for a city and school economically. That man racked in millions and the city using that money to build roads , construction , clean water etc . Tbh it’s always been a problem with most HBCUs admin messing up funds for schools. Also they didn’t even offer coach prime anything to stay that is disrespectful. Funny thing is the last hole game we had last week how the crowd was literally singing goodbye to him and being disrespectful it really do be your own kind. Hearing people form Mississippi definitely giving us that closure we needed to hear. Deion Sanders made an impact on a historic HBCU. Support HBCU's every time you get whether a celebrity is coach or not. We need to continue to educate, influence and preserve our legacy
IMO he is not a sell out. I believe he gave all he could, he has passed the baton to next coach & provided an opportunity to continue or improve on what he's done.
He didn’t get none of his players drafted from his school which was the whole goal to build a hbcu & show that they have nfl talent there.

I graduated from a HBCU & my freshman yr my work study job was in the financial aid office. You would be shocked how many alumni @ my school owed money post graduation and did not pay. My job was to reach out to these people and remind them of what they owed. The contact information from their admission had changed but I figured out a way to track them down by looking them up in the alumni book. They were in there address and all.
Wow! Were they able to get their diplomas? At my alma mater, if you have a bursar balance, you can not get your degree!

He was a high school coach so he strategically went to coach at a HBCU, where his name had value, because he knew he could have the opportunity to be a head coach. PWI would NEVER allow him that opportunity without college level experience. He got the experience and bounced after talking black empowerment and saying we didn't need them

If his decision to coach at JSU was purely about his coaching career, he never should have made an issue about coaching at a HBCU. I am not a sports fan, but I watched his 60 minutes interview and others because he seemed so committed to prove the value of HBCU football teams, and he never missed an opportunity to talk about the historical and/or social context of him coaching at a HBCU. So, while I commend his success there, he is responsible for the high expectations that he created among fans and the public.
Also, he should be very grateful to JSU for giving him, an inexperienced college football coach, the opportunity to prove himself as a coach. Obviously, white universities weren't willing to take that risk. Now that he has used JSU to garner experience, demonstrate his abilities, and build notoriety, white universities are willing to give him a chance. But that's how white folks are; they are never willing to take a chance on us. We have to prove our worthiness 10 times over.

No, bc not all of us are Jsu fans. Jsu is a rival to my alumni and even I supported them bc of the magnitude of what he could have done which was start a pipeline from hbcus to the NFL. That's the end goal of the rhetoric he preached and he didn't stay long enough for one player he recruited to do that. The problem were the expectations on the Deion-JSU marriage. We have to remember that PWI's would not hire Deion 3-4 years ago. Afterwards, Deion went to JSU preaching about building JSU up to compete with Power 5 conferences. That gives the notion that you are planning to stay for the long haul to build a foundation...he moved like a politician w/ his rhetoric though. Can't be mad at Deion for going to CU (big payday, better facilities, more national coverage, better recruiting opportunities, mores exposure for his son). Only thing that we need to recognize is that Deion's rhetoric didnt match with his actions, plus JSU is not competing with Power 5 conferences at the time of his leave. He gave a blueprint for people to follow for sure. Tbh, only Deion could've moved the way he did at an HBCU during the past 2 seasons. So I get why people are disappointed and they do have a right to feel that way. On the other hand, there is nothing wrong with Deion getting into a market with more access and opportunity. But calling a spade a spade, Deion was not genuine with his rhetoric he gave to JSU supporter in public forums. Bomani Jones was correct in a certain perspective.

I went to JSU and I’m very appreciative for what he did for the school and the city. Even when he took the job to begin with I thought it was understood that he wasn’t here to stay forever, the man is trying to climb the ladder in the coaching ranks and doing what’s necessary to do so.
Some of those players from Jackson State are coming with Deon....his son is about to be quarterback and there's more coming.... he told the whole Colorado team to get they transfers ready...

For example would you go from McDonalds to Burger King or McDonalds to Ruth’s Chris? Your resume is more diversified if you do the latter. Maybe HBCU to HBCU was too lateral for him. And the money thing is actually out of question. 5+ mil per year vs 300k which was split. So his family/generation wealth just went way up.
Look at the positives in this. Prime could potentially create a recruiting lane for HBCU students. Which could lead to larger colleges donating to HBCU just like he did with corporate sponsors. There so much more work we can do on both sides - inside and outside of HBCU

Some people who have been following him since Day 1 at JSU are simply disappointed because HE said that HE would "level the playing field" for HBCU's and "it wasn' t about money" because it was a GOD CALL! I don't think anybody expected him to stay at JSU forever, however, we could have did without the pomp and circumstance that he lead with, with that "impact over income" narrative he pushed. A lot of times in life our people have very limited thinking. Coach Prime started something great for us. But now it's up to us to continue and move our universities forward. Don't complain, just put some boots on the ground and let's make this happen.
He couldn’t go to a PWI cause he didn’t even have a degree to get hired as a coach. He got a job he wouldn’t normally get without being an assistant coach at the college level. It’s not about he leveling up, it’s about what he sold JSU and HBCU football “God called him to Jackson to help HBCU football and black kids get a level playing field” and he didn’t stick around for one graduating class

I’ve admired Coach Prime for going to JSU. Two and a half years ago, I started listening to Deon, even seeking out, speak on youth, young men and the success they can achieve. I felt what he did, by going to JSU to coach, was benevolent of him. All the things he said, like, “I was called by God to come here and provoke change," Sanders said on his Twitter account. "I love it. I enjoy it. It is a tremendous challenge. It is a tremendous undertaking, but I am the man for the job. I love the environment and the atmosphere. I have four kids that go here now." He repeatedly exclaim, it was God calling him to coach at a HBCU. I started seeing a faithful, altruistic, selfless, generous man. But, when he was first asked about going to another school, offering much more than what I felt was a sacrifice, his response was, he would entertain leaving JSU for a Power Five.
That was confusing, and I couldn’t recognize that same beneficent any longer. I kept looking for interviews, direct quotes, or posts, that I was just hearing humors. Because all the praiseworthy reasons for coaching at JSU, including the lectures, talks and teachings he would give to his players, I couldn’t imagine he would leave before some notable, long-standing changes. (I mean, come on, the man is super wealthy, and his body is still hurting) His statement about entertaining a bigger paying coach job, after such a short tenure at JSU, alternatively leads me to conclude it was the money. 🎵Must be the money🎵
I say this because work with kids who want to try college, especially those with a C grade average. Many parents worry or fail to seek my help because they think my cost is probably too high. Others don’t believe in the value of my assistance, because it’s free. I do this work because I want to break a generational higher education curse in black families. I’ve done this work since May 1985. I take in up to seven kids per semester. I chose based on who asks first. I have an above 86% success rate. I’ve never charged anyone because it’s a big part of why I do it. I thought, based on the shared belief in helping our black youths.

So, I guess I’m just disappointed. The Coach Primetime I knew two years ago, isn’t the Coach Sanders I see today. I thought I recognized a little of Coach Prime and myself in my cause. Another hero gone. Saturday HBCU days won’t be as exciting, but I can now cancel ESPN+.

I think the disappointment comes from thinking changing the narrative meant he would restore HBCU’s sports to its once glory days where top recruits choose HBCU’s (although out of necessary then) and went on to play professionally. I think that’s what the disappointment majority thought the end goal was.

What has Deion done that has leveled the playing field for HBCUs? What has he done that is going to sustain after he leaves? We know the media ain’t coming back to JSU or HBCUs. It seems that most folks commenting have not followed Deions vision from the start. He said he wanted to level the playing field by getting HBCUs on ESPN and not ESPN2, he wanted to get them into bowl games, and he wanted more black athletes to choose HBCUs. People are disappointed because he did not complete the mission and he took the first offer out. He left an undefeated HBCU to go to a 1-11 PWI. No one thinks he’s a sellout but we are disappointed because we “believed” as he always preached. We always knew he would leave eventually, but there was more work to be done that could have helped HBCUs and our communities tremendously. I wish our people would wake up and stop being so gullible. That’s why all the races keep running over us and using and abusing our people. We have to hold people accountable for their actions if we want to get ahead.

He brought better facilities, notoriety, fame, and established a work ethic. He had a 90% graduation rate that was unheard of before he got there. He came in and over promised which led to disappointment once he left. That’s it. There’s a bigger issue with HBCUs being underfunded all across the nation. Mississippi tried to combine the three public HBCUs in Mississippi years ago just to reduce funding and give it the PWIs. Most of the funding at PWIs does not come from alums, so the issue is not us giving back. Years of disproportionate funding, lack of resources, racism, underpaid workers, subpar educational systems has unfortunately led Jackson to where it is. Prime was always a means to an end.. I’m sure the AD there knew that. Which is why he was able to jump out that contract with ease and leave. He showed the world how great HBCUs can be!
