Thanks for the video. my helmet stoped working ,and i did your procedure ,but instead of installing new battery’s I soldered in a cr-123a battery holder mounted to the inside surface of the helmet.. now i can replace battery’s anytime i need without removing or taking anything apart.
Thanks for the video, sir! Mine was a Lincoln 1840 that was a “gift” that came with my welder. The internals were a little different. I needed to put a strip of electrical tape around the edge of the batteries. Also, no room from screws so I just used a Gorilla tape to hold it together. Thanks again.
I used 2 AAA batteries and soldered a battery case from an old remote. Figured AAAs are easier to find than those flat batteries. Works as well. Thanks for the idea.
Have same hood basically but from hf. Thanks for giving me a look at the board and what the problem is. Going to modify mine to have the batteries on the outside of the plastic shell
I ran into that problem today. Even though I knew what the problem was, I wasn't sure if it would ruin it if I opened it. I was about to go buy a cheap one tomorrow but I found your video and I replaced them with 2032. It works. You helped me save about $60 and I saved an extra 15% by switching to Geico..😎
Pro TIP: Don't try to solder onto CR2032 batteries, use hot glue or tape to keep them together and also use wires instead of those metal bullshit so you can take them outside the enclosure. I couldn't get the solder to stick and eventually blew one up. Not a big deal. Just to save you hassle of sanding and realizing it won't stick unlike AA batteries.
Thanks. I have the idea to do a modification with such a thing. The idea is a manual switch to enable darkening mode so you can just turn it on when you're about to weld. This way I can prevent the short flash just before it is getting dark, which is so annoying.
done this, cheers , used 2x 3v 2016 which i had laying around , i just desoldered the metal clips from the board and put some wires there instead probably quicker , i realise probably not rechargeable cells i put in but will change to correct cr2430 when the cells die
I know money’s tight for most of us but it really is worth the extra few bucks for a Lincoln hood, I have a Lincoln Viking hood for 120, takes triple A’s and works great. Spend the extra few bucks. Will last a lot longer than metal man crapz
@Michael Smith for a small/quick (painless) MacGyver and a $90 USD(give or take) savings; it's very much worth FIXING what is broken than to toss it and buy MORE... which is what is wrong with society today...UNLESS that is, one may be a LE rep...hummm
This the same internals as the mask from Northern Tool (Item #1649902). Chinese $hit, but it works. Nice how they didn't even bother to make the batteries accessible. Trying to use one of these right now since the batteries in my Hobart mask gave out. Guess I'll pop open the box and swap in some CR2032s to get me by.
I’ve got a Hobart Discovery SV and I replaced the battery in it but when I held it up to the sun it didn’t darken any. Shouldn’t the sun be bright enough to darken it. PS I didn’t see but one battery in mine
had a weldng test the other day and oth my helmets that i have not used in 2 years let me down, on the tig weld i was burning my eyes as the auto dark was failing on and off and when it was working steady all i could see was the glow of the arc and everything around was dark so i could not see what was going on and the same was happening for my mig weld helmet , the mig helmet has two aaa batts that i changed but still had this problem and the tig one has no batts ,i am assuming they might be the disc types on the inside but are these not made specail to hold the solar charge? why does my mig helmet have solar panel but uses regular aaa batt? i am confused are these batts suppose to hold charge and some do not but do something else? i thought the solar panel is suppose to store a charge in either capacitors or special batts so why does my other helmet have reg batts? anyways tried cleaning the sensors but again problem was not solved ,guess i got to get new cheap chinese helmets again
Would it have been helpful to heat the soldered contacts on the battery with an iron instead of just breaking the joints? Very informative just the same and so thank you Sir...
Ok I did mine a lot different, I put my battery’s on the outside made a lot easer if I have to change battery’s Sometime. Where idi u get ur front clear liens what size did u get. Very good video Richard
Now if you can assemble 50 of those a day and glue them so they are non-servicable, you can have a great job in China for a dollar a day!! But seriously, that was a good video I have to try this on my helmet
Man I always strike a cigarette lighter in front of my autodarkening helmet to test and make adjustments before actually welding. I’ve burned my eyes so many times now that every little bit helps
You CAN NOT burn your eyes with the mask on, even if it's to bright the filter in the lense takes out the uv light that burns. You may see dots for a few mins that's all.
2nd Lincoln Helmet Ive owned and it has failed again. Turn the switch to grind then back to weld and it stopped working. Replace batteries but no help.
My auto darkening helmet (not solar) kills batteries every week. Thought maybe it was activating in the shop with the bright lites so I put it in a pillowcase in a dark drawer. Still every time I take it out the batteries are dead. Usually every couple of weeks I use it.
The only thing I would suggest is to remove the batteries when you are done using it. Hopefully they are easy to take out. If they are, it’s probably your best option, as annoying as it would be.
@@Mudford thanks for the response. No they are a pain in the butt. I have done that a few times but it is for work so when I need it I can't be taking time messing around. Probably bring it home and get a better one for work when I get my next tool allowance. Thing is only a little over a year old. Only use it once or twice a week if that. Thanks!
Hi sir what if fixing the welding lens, if it doesn't work normally, from light to dark (not autodarkening) I first thought of batteries or modules, but I tried to swap or replace modules, the results didn't work, but on the old lens (cracked glass) still works I suspect there is a defect in the lens glass (the lens I just bought)
Hi,I have the same problem with my Princess Auto Helmet for 100.00 bucks, it is 3 years old and used 4 times.not good...just accidentally burned my eyes yesterday with this issue....due to not working properly,...not a good feeling... you stated in the video, saying that the batteries didnt "charge anymore..Are you sure they are "rechargeable Batteries in your helmet?,Im most sure they are not rechargable mmmm... i didnt see"rechargeable written on mine". nice repair ! 100---100
Also, what type of lithium coin battery did you use. Some of those 3V batteries say on the back "do not recharge". Other more expensive ones with tabs pretacked onto the battery do say rechargeable, but two of them plus shipping is almost the cost of a new helmet from Harbor Freight, especially if you have one of those 25% off 1 item coupons.
I used CR2032 batteries, with no tabs. I just put a piece of foam in that holds the battery and tabs tightly. They don't say anything on the battery about not recharging. They have been in the helmet for a year with no issues. I see that they have CR2032's on Amazon that say rechargeable for $5.
Yeah, that's cool. I didn't want a pressure contact because I figured it was prone to come unconnected at just the wrong time. And I have soldered right to NMH batteries before, but never a coin battery. Who knows what the heat of soldering would do to such a small battery. I ended up jumpering the right battery and bring two wires out for the left battery. then hooked up 5 rechargeable low self discharge NMH batteries. 2000mah, should last a long time.
cr2032's are not rechargable, your helmet uses the arc spark for power when in use the batteries provide initial power only, when you first start, these 3v lithiums will last 3 to 5 yrs depending on use. You are supposed to discard the helmet at this time, but like you I repaired mine, mine is a lincoln, but is identical to yours, lincoln sells chinese junk at double the HF price...Skum .....good job on the video The pieces you will need to make battery holders for the next time, are found in Casio, and Timex watches. I used the battery holders from 2 casio "G shocks" (1$ at the thrift shop)you tin solder the strips to the battery holder then you have a nice secure battery holder, its easy
Well, you shouldn't really burn your eyes because it should have at least 16 of constant protection All The time even without autodarkening. So. Lucky you.
Wondered why it was fcking up so much! @#$%^ I have read somewhere that if you set them in the sun it will charge up the batteries a bit before welding. Don't know how true it is. I'm thinking you can set up some welders to be a battery spot-welder. set it on timmed spot weld and turn it way down set the time for 10ms. I'll have to give it a try.
I tried that a few times, but it's hard to tell if you have it charged enough. It doesn't work if its cloudy, or dark out when you want to weld either.
So basically these manufacturers rely on planned obselansence or timed product failure as the way to earn profits, such as cordless drills or toolz with lithium or ni- cad rechargeable batteries, which after a year refuse to recharge because of ionic disruption, also the replacement batteries are more expensive than the entire tool kit new. Many are not even available 2 years later. It's now part of our culture to disable the workers that are new and cost them all right away based on the fact many newbies cannot afford real quality . So there's more than meets the eye ( no pun intended) when starting out because skill at labor is not what's important anymore. Or working on your own jobs instead of punching a timecard. Just cheesy unethical marketing of foriegn products.
Got me back on the job inside 30 minutes when I thought I was gonna lose a day waiting for a new part. Big thumbs up!

You can buy a Lincoln Viking hood for 120 and it takes triple A’s it’s a bit more expensive but wayyyy less of a hassle.

Same fix for my higher end lincoln helmet aswell. Thanks for the tips. saved big bux not tossing/replacing my entire helmet
I was about to throw away my welding helmet. Thanks a lot. You saved some money.

I haven’t any problems with it other than the battery issue.

YES YES YES. This idiot cuts the tabs off the cells, rather than just using a fucking SOLDERING IRON to de-solder the batteries from the PCB
Thanks for this video, it helped me fix my welding helmet.

That was quite awhile ago, I can’t remember. I probably just grabbed a clear lens from Tractor Supply
Thanks will c.

As a newbie doing low voltage TIG. OMG this Yeswelder helmet sucks; I would have spent a little more if I knew then what I know now.
I just point my TV remote to the glass (any button will do) to adjust before continuing welding. Try it!😊
2nd Lincoln Helmet Ive owned and it has failed again. Turn the switch to grind then back to weld and it stopped working. Replace batteries but no help.
great video, but for me the problem is that my helmet is always dark, do you think that the battery change will solve that, thanks
A very thoughtful gift from the Mrs., How did that go for you to use her PC cutlery ?!!?!!? I was cringing the whole way hahaha!!
She never even knew I used it.

Hi sir
what if fixing the welding lens, if it doesn't work normally,
from light to dark (not autodarkening)

but I tried to swap or replace modules, the results didn't work,
but on the old lens (cracked glass) still works

It sounds like you eliminated the other likely possibilities. I would guess that you are correct.
What size battery did you replace with

Why don't they just make them so the batteries can be changed?
I assume this problem is only with the cheaper brands?
I thought the same, turns out this is the fix my higher end Lincoln helmet aswell.
You don’t need to solder the tabs onto the battery?
Doreen Goossen I did not. I used it a lot since I made the video, and it’s been fine.

I used the battery holders from 2 casio "G shocks" (1$ at the thrift shop)you tin solder the strips to the battery holder then you have a nice secure battery holder, its easy
@@OweN-hu6uy - or just BUY 2032 battery holders.
OR just much tabbed lithum batteries.
Thanks got it fixed .
You skipped over the most important part, how did you reattach the battery tabs that were spot welded.
No need to spot weld. Tabs just need solid contact to batteries. Use a small piece of foam
Good, informative video, but... I've never seen a ceramic knife that bends like that lol
Well, you shouldn't really burn your eyes because it should have at least 16 of constant protection All The time even without autodarkening. So. Lucky you.
I did away with the disc battery's and wired in a cap that fits the square 9 volt batterys

Mudford yup, worked on mine for like 2 minutes of welding then poof back to not working. great instructions by the way
Sorry it didn't work for you. Must have been something more serious than the batteries. Solar panel issues, maybe?
try cleaning the sensors. the little square holes....
