Giving that negative voice a name that wasn’t mine gave me the power to ignore it.
    “You suck.”
“Fuck you, Dave. I’m a damn rockstar.”
    Personify it, overcome it.

Absolutely in a never ending battle with that negative voice in my head, I come off as a nice guy, try to. But that voice in my head can be so evil. I hate feeding it any thoughts

Only way to stop it is meditation and/or other supportive people talking to you in a healthy way. Babies aren’t born thinking negative thoughts, so where did you learn to think yours?

The subconscious is like a 4 year old child that believes anything you tell it, like believing in Santa for instance. It just absorbs anything you expose it to. I listen to soundscapes(no lyrics) these days (try Cloud Kicker) just so no one can take a psychic shit in the dark recess' of my mind.(like listening to too much of the band Tool for instance) brilliant band but the subconscious food isn't healthy. Hard to change programming. Other thing is heaps of us are chemically maimed these days so it's partially not our fault when performance is lacking.
An active flow state is the best way to keep it quiet IMO, proactive distraction.

@@newuser689 that's really not the ONLY way nor is it really effective. You can't meditate 24/7 or only be around supportive people 24/7

@@itsyaboydanno7143 Right, meditating 10-20 minutes a day for 8-12 weeks is good enough. No more needed than that, you will literally start to think in a different way. Negative thoughts become something you *listen* to rather than *identify* with.

I was like Peter. The face in the mirror was my worst enemy. Then I realized that most of my friends sucked, not me; and that I was really my own best friend all along. Life has been great ever since. That's 63+ years talking.

Generally speaking, it seems like the more obsessed we are with certain outcomes occurring in our lives the less happier and less present we tend to be and the more we struggle with the negative self talk. It reminds me of how in sports when an athlete is in a zone he/she is completely present, locked in, and not at all concerned about what will or won’t happen and ironically is when they are performing their best. This is in contrast to when they are slumping and there is performance anxiety and a complete focus on the outcome and past failures and potential future failures is circulating in their minds.

I can attest to this. Its good to be introspective, but you have to apply it. When I have an off week (lack of sleep, too much social interaction, and heavy work loads), i have an inner rage voice. I dont want to be that way towards people, so I tell them Im not up for conversation right now. If they respect my space, then they'll leave me alone and then next week, we talk and resume normal conversation

I figured out for myself a long time ago that there is no one arguing on your behalf with that inner voice and that I would have to do it for myself using logical thinking and by talking to myself as though I was counseling my best friend. It worked. I also think psilocybin helped as well to re-wire things. It didn’t happen overnight, but one day I realized that the hyper-critical voice had stopped.

Tony Robins used to call that a "Dickens Pattern".
Bring emotion to the impact in the past, present, and future... And for future, what will it be like if you don't change, what will it be like if you did change.

Rage is often a positive thing. A strong, motivating force that is directed against an enemy. You should not try to ride yourself of rage but you should try to direct your rage towards an enemy in a productive manner.

😢❤💪🏻... such a powerful journey to share. I am 52 and live under the weight of intense suicidal ideations. This is one of the self talk tools I've procrastinated in using with the same discipline that Dex the Dick (my inner Bobby Knight) has in beating me down. Big takeway...1. "I didn't do it because I thought it would work" and 2. Biggest most profound example/experience of neuoplacitity he's ever seen/witnessed and...no pills.
This clip moved me. A pillar of Self love is clearly, self talk. ❤

This is amazing. I teared up when he started talking kindly to this angry person, to himself. I can totally relate. I get mad at myself too when I don't measure up, if I'm honest I actually hate myself, and here we see someone I admire show how they trained themselves to slow down in those moments and find a way of relating to themselves kindly in the midst of the pain of not feeling good enough.

In mental illnesses when people hear voices in their head, different monologues can be heard depending on culture. In the western world, things like 'you're stupid, they don't like you' etc can be heard. In places like India and within Australian aboriginals having voices come from within someones head can be a pleasant experience and be seen as a blessings. The result is they can manage their illness without treatments at home, but those who hear negative voices need to be prescribed medications, therapies and admission to psych wards etc.
positive/negative internal talk is no joke

The negative self talk is such an innate habit, that I sometimes feel like bipolar because something negative comes out of my mouth by reaction and then I’m like noooo I didn’t mean that, but then I feel defeated because it already came out of my mouth and I already sent the negativity out into the universe, so then I’m down on myself for the negativity that I just sent out. 😂

Who can immediately start voicing their kind thoughts to themselves wherever they are without it being completely inappropriate? The very reason you're having the "inner critic" thoughts is because you're already in a stressful situation.

I’m tired of these conversations. Some individuals have negative self talk because everything about their lives is a catastrophe. Malicious family members, addiction, poorly educated with no skills, not attractive, low IQ, medical conditions, infidelity, unspeakable trauma just to name a few. So who are these conversations geared towards? People with typical life problems would be my guess. Like look at these two. Smart, skilled, coveted, idolized and admired just to scratch the surface. What other factors were involved in the improvement of your life Peter? Just your ability to negate self talk. Some people have compounded problem layered in problems that some cognitive exercises are not going to touch in the slightest. People have this info at their disposal yet the numbers would show things are worse from a mental health perspective. Current life situation and your biology make up the majority of current behavior. Life’s problems require solutions and cognitive reframing isn’t going to get it done.
