Both are completely different instruments with an individual sound each of them can produce. Both instruments were highly regarded throughout the late 70s,80s and early 90s filling most funky and disco tunes, early hip hop with their sounds which could still be heard in sampled music reproduced today. They are both gems - Thad why they are still running hot today!
I LOVE that P-pickup sound. The J pickup is nice, but I could live without it. It amazes me how much more I like the tone of the Yamaha compared to the Stingray. Thanks.
Great demo! In my opinion; Yamaha is the right choice for people mainly looking for a throaty neck pickup sound, while StingRay is the right choice for people mainly looking for a biting bridge pickup sound. Different tools for different applications; one can't completely replace the other - despite some obvious overlap. I'd subjectively go with Yamaha though; I find the P sound more useful in my projects and use the bridge bite only occasionally.
Thanks! I'm in the process now of choosing between yam bb and mmsr and this vid of yours is an excellent help! (In case you're wondering I'm leaning towards yam but I won't be buying for awhile yet) Plus I loved that riff and will learning it😎
I googled this question and got this video, and the threads you made about it in talkbass and basschat. It's wild how different the poll results are on those two forums. :-O
The P pickup is a kind of humbucker, same as on Fender P basses. The J pickup can buzz but I have not found that to be a big problem. Stratocasters or Telecasters buzz a lot more but no one seems to care about that...
@@hampuslundgren7300 thank you for replying! I saw this ua-cam.com/video/Wnp1avvKK7U/v-deo.html and It was clearly a no for me in a bass this price. Maybe she is located in a room full of interferences. This would be prevented by a humbacked pickup I guess but the sound won't be the same. Do you feel the multilayer body and I.R.A. treatment really improves playing and sound? At this moment my doubt is Yamaha BBP34 or Fender AM Ultra Jazz Bass.
Objectively speaking no, it it not five times better in the same way a US Fender is not three times as good as a Mexican one. For me it was worth it though.
@@hampuslundgren7300 Thanks for your reply, man! Although I'm usually biased towards the Music Man basses I did prefer the Yamaha. Really thinking about getting this one.
I legitimately can’t hear one clip where the Yamaha doesn’t sound better, thicker, fuller and punchier. That’s my main issue with the MM basses. I just can’t make sense of their sound in the mix most of the time
The more comparisons you put out, the more impressed I get with the BBs.

The BB is perfect! Great playing
The Yamaha is so good, absolutely love the tone from that bass.

Nice to hear you playing with a pick, the Yamaha sounds great to me. Would love to see another Fender P vs Jazz Vs Yamaha BB but played with a pick
Nice demo - really does a great job of highlighting the difference between 2 very good instruments
Thanks!
They have very similar dimensions. I don't think one has the advantage over the other for small hands @williamperri3437
@williamperri3437Both are pretty easy to play I would say. Maybe slightly wider than a jazz bass. Both are full scale (34”) though!

Very nice playing and very useful content. Thank you.
Both of these basses sound so good.
Nice groove!

Haha yes, I think people kind of follow the general trend in the poll when voting.
Honestly the BB is basically a high tech P bass. A bit heavy. The Stingray is a completely different sound, whether you like it or not!
cool, as always
Amazing! Keep doing it
That bassline starting from 1:02 had me making the meanest face fr
Thanks!
Both nice basses - I will be the odd ball here I guess? - Stingray for the Win. Has that unmistakeable tone and works in many genres.
Iam using Yamaha BBP 35 , for me Yamaha BBP is good sound for Pasive Pickup.
@@budifunkbass1726 it sounds great!
Really helpful. Thank you!
Are pickups noisy in BBP34? I'm a bit concerned about it before buying it. Both are single coil, right?

My BBP35 is dead silent. Buzz is not an issue
@@BrettKlynn I bought a Dingwall Combustion 5 and an Ibanez EHB1005-BKF since the comment. Really happy with both :D
Hampus, would you say the ray special is worth 5 times the price of your Ray4? your Ray4 sounds so good!

@@hampuslundgren7300 fair enough.i had a stingray classic, stunning bass but my ray34 just felt better.

I’m more of a 4 string guy… Which bass did you prefer in this clip?

good choice!
Is the bassline at 0:31 from a song? Sounds fantastic!

With how similar they are. With EQ i wonder how close you could get
I have to ask: how do you record? It sounds so buttery sweet!!!
Thanks! Straight to Apogee interface. A bit of compression in Logic. No eq so you can hear the “natural” sound.

Lovley tone
all these tones you are getting are sick nasty
Thanks
Both are good tbh...just depends on the player
