- After fitting the same ESC, brushless motor, wheels and tyres, it's time to take the Mardave FP1 & Schumacher Racing ICON out for a shakedown test run. Will we start to see one becoming the favourite or is it too early to tell?

Hi,
There is a group on Facebook called F1 10th Circuit UK where we discuss all things F1 RC it may be worth joining as there is plenty of us that can provide help/opinion.
F1 is a difficult class to master
If you want to give them a proper test there is a F1 heat at West London racing centre on the 4th April if you want a full day of racing
Are the speedos sensored or sensorless? You’ll get gogging low down if they are sensorless.
Thank you for a really positive and professional video about one of my favourite r/c classes. Plenty of help from those with experience of racing F1s if you need it, and by all means get in touch if you do.
We have a group of us that have social F1 get togethers in a car park track on tarmac. You would be better off running a sensored motor, we run 21.5 motors. It usually takes newby’s several sessions before they get the hang of them. They spin out under acceleration and have high speed understeer. We turn brake strength down to stop them spinning out under brakes . But IMHO nothing improves your driving like regular F1 sessions.
Gav the understeer will probably.improve with the body on
Youve found a nice spot there. I may have to use it myself.
I could see that you were having problems trying to get to full throttle Gavin, you may well need to wait until the warmer weather comes in.
Both chasiis' look fantastic! And as someone else mentioned, if the motors/ESC's are sensorless then that would explain the cogging, not the pinion gear. Sensorless systems do tend to 'cog' unfortunately. Looking forward to seeing them both running to their full potential!!
Thanks for the info!
@@RCKickschannel I found this: www.radiocontrolinfo.com/brushless-motor-cogging-explained/
Hope we will see another comparison soon after a few adjustments etc, great job on comparison so far... cheers
Loads to go yet Wilson. I need to paint the bodies up and swap out the esc and motors for sensored brushless. After that I will adjust the steering to be toe out 1-2deg. I'm thinking of getting some tyre warmers as well.
A technical course would be the best test of both.
I wish I had a good onroad track nearby; it’d give me an excuse to buy the higher-end kits.
You can also get tyre additive to make them more grippy. With additive you could play with under & oversteer by painting different amounts of the front/back tyre width. Foams might be better in cold weather also?
Foams are so much better in the cold conditions. I was also running my Fantom and that stuck like glue.
Gav, in F1 aero is the whole package, they need the bodyshells. Also kinda hesitant to judge them driving around on a normal full sized paved road. Those usually have undulations and gradients built into them. Put em on a track my friend.
Yes I agree the cars need the bodies but this was just a chassis shakedown to make sure the cars actually run with no fundamental issues. Bodies will come.
Good stuff though for getting all the same electronics in each car for the comparison and well done for not crashing without having brakes. Bet you have great fun with these ones you get the dial in going on each. I bet you ave those tyre warmers within a week. :-)
Yep it was good fun. Just a shakedown to make sure the cars actually run and nothing is too out of whack but it was only minimal power due to location and especially conditions. Bloody cold lol. I’m a big F1 fan so the tyre warmers look like a cool addition.
What size/kv are you using?
Hi Gavin. Can you do a channel vote on who likes hearing music on run videos? Am I the only one who wants to just hear the car or the buggy or whatever you are running?
Sorry music will always be part of the channel. I leave a bit of the running with no music but it will always transition into music.
Agreed, I would have liked to have heard the Mardave doing donuts and the Schumacher breaking traction, not Gav's favourite willy wanging air guitar track. Great video still.
Got to say i do Agree with this!
Why ?
What electronics are you running on these?
Currently building my carisma crf-gt, and no idea what motor/ESC to install
Low profile digital savox servo and a brushless system. I would make sure you fit a censored brushless motor. Check out HobbyWing combo kits.
1g difference is outrageous!
Funny I own a Spectrum DX3R those transmitters are such a close copy did a bit of a double take!
I was expecting them to be faster than that! 🤔 The downforce effect and grip would be better if they were faster, maybe handle a bit better too!
that's some good stuff right there!! Hey Gav, what do you think of the Tamiya F104 pro II? I'd like to add an F1 type car to my collection without spending too much, not that i would drive it all that much;) which one of the three would be the best bang for buck sorta deal? Thanx Gav!
Hi Bill, I can't really say as I have never had a F104. I love my F201 and I would recommend that to an F1 fan as it does look like an F1 car under the body. The ICON & FP1 are full track focused cars so its more about performance than chassis F1 realism.
Wouldn't you run them with additive on the front and rear tyres. Warm the tyres also ?
Yup for tyre warmers. Use of additives depends on what’s allowed at individual clubs (assuming one is taking these to race at club / national level.
do any of them have a suspension?
oil dampers
additifs + chauffe roues et c top 👍
That thing is quick.
Oh wait.... you did a ffw edit.
OK after watching the whole video I guess it is kind of quick.
With the brushed power that these cars have, these are bonkers fast. The runs you are watching are mostly 25-30% due to lack of traction and ESC braking.
@@RCKickschannel Awesome man, thanks.
@@MrCumstein be faster than my mardave v12 and thats not slow even running a 21 turn brushed motor on 2s it will do 30 odd mph it's also running prity much the same tyres but there the newer low profile ones, and my other one is running 3300kv on 3s and it will prob do double that speed going to make it into a speed car now haha
@@ISOSAILING Yeah, little on road cars are usually fairly quick.
I have an old-school RC12L with a 14T double and a 4 cell NiMh pack (4.8 volts lol). It's a replica of the car Joel Johnson won the IFMAR championships with in the 12th scale modified carpet class. It will hit 48 mph on a good day, but traction is always an issue. Especially when it's not on carpet.
I wonder if the white plastic pieces will take dye well?
I don’t know, it’s hard to tell without trying. You can purchase them in black or white.
@@RCKickschannel I’ve heard it so long as there’s enough Nylon it’ll work
how much these run for a roller?
Mardave: www.mardave.co.uk/spares/venom-gts-assassin/venom-center-weight-879-884-887-detail
Schumacher: www.racing-cars.com/new-products/november-2020/icon-formula-kit-k189
Run them on carpet or concrete. And those chassis are ment to run on 1s not 2. The cogging could be due to the sensorless motor esc xombos
How can you compare without body's on?
I don’t know
Run with the bodys on will make a difference to the handling
No it won’t
You need a sensored motor
We run 21.5 brushless at my track
And sensored is the way to go on those type of cars
I run a tamiya f104 pro2 and a xray x1
I will swap these out and put them in some buggies. I will order some HW brushless sensored motors today.
They are probably the hardest race class to drive with them being very narrow and having no proper suspension, other than side cars that is, don't go there 😂. Setting the ball diff is a crucial setting especially in low traction. You don't actually brake a lot in this class if you do it's usually to get the front end turned in as they do understeer a lot. Are you using a sensored system?
I think I will tighten the diffs a bit more. These are not sensors motors.
@@RCKickschannel you usually want it looser if it's struggling under acceleration. I think you will struggle with running a sensorless system, Hobbywing do their Justock ESC which is very popular in stock racing.
The cogging could be sensor wire if your running in sensor mode
No these don’t have sensor mode.
I wouldnt use sensorless systems in pan cars.
Good review, thanks. A lot F1 cars are going to have understeer and oversteer problems on cold tarmac.
Yes it’s far too early to make any real judgements over performance. I was happy to see the two cars running smoothly with little resistance and no chassis issues. Tonight I’m checking over all the bolts for anything loose.
They aren't a joint enterprise between the company's are they? Looking very similar
No but these cars do share some components.
How about an update on your opinion on these two?
Yes these are desperate to return to the channel.
Faaaaaaan tastic
Think you need some mini tyre warmers 😂
I so do and that would be cool Heheheh I’ve been looking at them online
Why toe in and not toe out? I run toe out to get the most out of my steering on an asphalt track
Bet they both handle the same as the Tamiya F104 Pro considering all three seem to share the same chassis design, good thing about Sweep tyres is they fit all three brands.
If you're going to do these test videos, would they not be better done on a proper track? The content would be so much better imo.
A small issue with something called COVID & UK lockdown unfortunately. I want to build a track for RCKicks so I can film all cars running for the show. If you would like to support and make this a reality, please checkout www.patreon.com/RCKicks
@@RCKickschannel tracks in England are opening back up as of next month. I'm sure they would welcome you to use them in your videos. Cheaper than building your own track for sure. Good luck.
Hunt for foam tires.
I have a set 👍🏻
You could at least mention the motor and esc specs. Timewaster.
And just think, all you had to do was ask nicely and I would have told you. Wow
Why run with out a body? You aren't getting a genuine performance evaluation
Bodies are not don't yet and it was just a shakedown run to make sure everything is smooth and no running gear issues.
Toe out only no toe in 🤦🏼♂️
I'm running with 1mm toe in.
We never run with toe in! It’s always toe out 1-2mm
I’ll try it 👍🏻
Cogin what is that ?
