Good Vid Charlie but gotta say that price is outrageous! 😮 It's just a few lights.
Got taken for a ride. Hopefully they gave him a hefty discount. Self sourced lights, a couple of Shelly smart relays and home assistant and this could have been done for 300 quid.
I like Charlie’s video that are always informative but I wonder who wants to pay £1600 for some garden lights. The margin must be outrageously high. Charlie used to suggest cheap diy hacks but this is not longer the case. It almost gives the impression he is reading a sales script on this one.
@@antoinec1066 totally agree. I have made a range of DIY videos for my own channel - more of hobby than serious dedicated work but mine focus on doing jobs on a budget mainly and so I can't relate to this video at all really. £200 I could probably achieve the exact same look...
Your DIY outside fuse box is fabulous.
Better than most new builds
@@Stormin_Mike new builds just slap a generic box on the wall i would be very surprised if they use something else
@@GoldenAdhesive I know I have one. It pierces the two wall skins and a horrible cold bridge
Charlie I've been watching your videos for years, your home and garden are looking really stunning, you must be so proud of all of the graft you've done! Thanks for taking us all on your journey!
Thanks so much. We're slowly getting there and are really pleased with the re-landscaping and kitchen! The slight problem is after a year of building works I've now run out of money to do anything else for a while 😉
I'm glad you've used low voltage in the garden. It's the right way to do it.
No shit
That fusebox looks amazing, Outstanding work!
Nice job, but £1600 for outdoor light? no chance.
Did my girlfriends garden for about £200.
Which brand did you op for
@@coolmonkey619 Cannot remember, but they came from amazon and all worked straight out of the box, and still do-3 years later.
Bookmarked this for February when we redo our garden, Thanks Charlie!
You're welcome 👊
Try adding them into your Home Assistant configuration!
Looks incredible Charlie, great work! The garden is looking amazing!
All i can say is Home Assistant is your friend for all automation ;)
👍👍👍 The effect is worth all the hard work. Thanks Charlie
Thanks - good to hear from you 👊
Looks lovely but, too costly.
It's a cool idea - bring a 24V around the garden, and power wirelessly-controlled lights. Huge reduction in complexity. This should work with Z-wave as well. Z-wave would let you extend the range easily, because any powered z-wave device is also a relay, so, if you put, for example, a z-wave light switch by the yard door, it'd automatically relay the communicattions from inside the house.
Nice garden set-up and review. Thanks Charlie. It would be overkill in my garden as it is smaller than the grass patch you just laid. Take care & stay safe.
Great project!
We have recently had our new garden done and have the issue now of sorting out the lighting situation and at a loss of what to do!
I have to say what a great lighting choice you went for looks amazing great job cost a lot yes but worth the money this video did help me to think about how I am going to do something similar in my garden
Thanks so much for that.. Really glad you found it useful. 👊
Great video Charlie, very informative 👍🏻
This is the only DIY project that you've completed that i think ive beat you on with my Philips Hue installation 😉
Hi Charlie . I can see your objective was a complete interactive system , and I would say you have achieved your goal . As for the longevity of the individual parts , that of course is too early to tell . But admittedly the overall effect is very pleasing , and I’m sure you will gain much pleasure from your new lighting Scheme . Kind regards as always 👍
Thanks, I appreciate that 🙏
A lot of effort from you as usual.....thank you
You're welcome. Thanks for that 👊
The remote seems to be a bit limited in terms of having to be operated manually - you mentioned a Smart plug . . . our patio has lights around it set into the walls/cladding (with lights on the sides of the steps) all operated from a Hive plug/socket giving fully programmed lighting .... just have to adjust the schedule as the seasons change. The lights are all on one circuit but it wouldn't be difficult to create several circuits and use more than one Hive plug. No colour adjustment bells & whistles but the simple white lights work for us!
Does hive not have a setting for sunset/sunrise? We use tapo plugs all through the house to power lamps and we have them set to come on at sunset . They work a charm and save so much hassle
i used a govee setup recently with their wifi control its a great alternative to a more premium philips hue.
love your videos Charlie. really interested in this video as I was looking at these lights as an option for my garden. and having watched this video I think I will go ahead with this system. also been watching your videos on hanging things on plasterboard as I have curtains and blinds to hang.
It's great to hear that Rhys - thanks for letting me know. I'm guessing you saw the last big update video on plasterboard fixings ua-cam.com/video/Jdu9RId7m90/v-deo.htmlsi=A8S9lswmqP3n4HjN 👊
@@CharlieDIYte I did thanks. after watching I bought some fisher duopower plugs bullfix fittings. please to say i put the blinds up and they look ok.
that price FORGET it
bloody hell .. how much !!!!!!!
very nice install, but you should discuss the pro/cons of such an install. Like how it affects nightlife for bugs, birds and other life in the garden as artificial lighting is very "polluting" for them, and our benefit should be weighted against theirs.
I've got garden lights myself, but I use them for occasions to not upset bugs whom I rely on for my fruit trees and flowers
Pretty sure the ZigBee kikolos are insect friendly. I won't have them on often enough to cause any disruption to insect life though.
@@CharlieDIYte Cool. I didn't know that lights could be insect friendly, I've got Philips Hues myself, I'd look into replacing them then.
Shoild have future proofed your fuse board and made it twice the size... you know you will end up needing a bigger enclosure..
Great job.
These Paulmann products are so, so similar to the Philips Hue product surely they are aligned?
I have been looking at Paulmann for cable lights for our open plan room as they are the only people that seem to offer that. Also looking at their 24V garden lights as they support a conection to my Loxone home automation system. That would allow me to install this lighting and control it all with my main house automtion platform (like you should have done in your kitchen ;-) )
Yes I did think that about the kitchen lights!!
Looks great. Most people will have a run of concrete pathway between the house and their grass/ seating area. I'd be interested to see how you would tackle that ( is it cutting a trench into the concrete pad ? If so, how deep do you need to go ( are the regs around that ) ? Then what should you use to sheath the cable ? And will an inflill/ back pour of concrete set properly or be continually prone to cracking/ lifting out ?
I would maybe try and tunnel underneath.
Looks really great. Perhaps there is no way to avoid it, but the wires look like they are going to get in the way when gardening are they not?
Thanks. I have the wires at the back of the flower bed so they don't interfere with future planting. I didn't show the time lapse of my covering the cables for some reason. I always miss something 🤦
Govee do some amazing indoor and outdoor lighting for seriously cheap prices for the amount of automation and customisation
That's good to know 👌👊
Glad I wasn’t the one who thought this was crazy pricing for a bunch of zigbee lights.
This seems like an absurdly expensive way to achieve this? 1.6k for a few garden lights
there’s cheaper ways to do
that’s what happens when you got to much money lol
@@truth3358 admittedly I don't know what the cheaper solutions are ...but this seems more expensive than Philips...and that's impressive
@Bluew01f and @truth3358 how much do you think this set up should cost? I ask because whilst there are likely cheaper ways electrical work such as the fuse box can cost more than expected.
@@williambeckett9229 the majority of the cost isn't in the fuse box. The fuse box price was fine.
The issue is the 80-120 lights and expensive proprietary accessories.
Absolutely mugged off. £600 for the lights. 😂
Love the garden fuse box. Does it connect direct to the mains inside your house?
Thanks. Yes it does
@@CharlieDIYte - I've wondered about doing the same thing. But I was concerned that the run from the house would be (electrically) unprotected. (Is that the case? Or am i missing something?)
Nice sofa, is there a vid on these coming up especially which cushions
Yes there is. The cushions were made by the soft furnishings company I used to run with my wife but I'm sure there are lots of options online.. Hoping to post the vid in a couple of weeks.
@@CharlieDIYte There are cushions online as you say. In terms of dimensions I can see cushions size dictating bench size. Look forward to the vid
Great video really enjoyed. Is that David Austin Rose (Olivia Rose Austin ) next to the electric house in the garden, by any chance?
Thanks Paul. It could well be. It's certainly a David Austin climber.
Seeing the comments about the overpriced nature of the lights, my feeling is that what you are paying for is convenience. You could easily get a variety of manufacturers' zigbee lights for far less, but then you've got to figure out how it's all going to be powered safely - a system like this just comes out the box and hooks up. I'd do it the more difficult way, but I've been playing with lighting and gone assistant for years, so I've got a bit more expertise in that area to have confidence to do it.
Most of them are ‘single comment on the channel’ trolls who just dip into videos to share their brand of negativity.
I’d be interested to see just how good these supposed way cheaper brands are that everyone is swooning over, yet mysteriously don’t seem to be telling us what they are and what price they are 🤷♂️
Agreed. Plus you buy cheap stuff that needs replacing every few years and it quickly becomes a false economy.
Agreed. I don't mind criticism but really hate criticism that doesn't then go on to suggest alternatives, or even to say what I've done wrong and how they'd improve on it..
@@CharlieDIYte 100% Charlie… it’s too easy to just drop random comments slating something with no context.
Thanks, Charlie. Great video and very informative. What is HCL, though?
It stands for Human Centric Lighting - where you set the light throughout the day to adjust the light quality to better suit your natural biorhythms (I've just Googled that 🤣). So more relevant to their internal light systems than the garden.
@@CharlieDIYte 😂
Thanks!
Ditch the remote and integrate into home assistant
Yeah it looks amazing, cost for us diy folk is too much, not for me.
1600 quid for a dozen lights?! 60 quid for 10m of low power cable? Blimey
The price is just insane
Philips Hue finally have some competition for most overpriced smart lights!
The price is steep. Looks good quality though. I’m 3 years down the line with Ellumiere stuff controlled using Quinetic in Wiska boxes. Works a charm via Alexa routines and a fraction of £1.6k
Sounds great Craig. Those Quinetic switches are awesome. 👌
All good idea, just a rip off on price consider that those 12/24v spot would cost £1 from chinese factory and each of the ip65 connector, around 10p. U may need a chinese fds to order for you though
Just stick to hue lilly on the ground and GU10 bulbs in outside light enclosure around everywhere else. The transformers are fully water proof and no need for all of these controllers, they are all zigbee 3 that work with IKEA.
Bin that remote and gateway off and get a home assistant server with a zigbee dongle!
I really need Home Assistant. Is it accessible for techno noobs yet?
@@CharlieDIYte You do need an old PC or something to run it off, after you’ve done the initial setup it’s and added a couple of devices it’s easy to get the hang of. I wouldn’t say it’s accessible as something like the Mik gateway but the underlying technology is the same and cheaper 👍
Agree with most comments about the price. I bought a set of IP67 GU10 fittings for about £20 each and got a set of 6x hive lights for about £60. Cabling was about £2 a meter. Put them all to a single junction box and done. I know it wasn't 24V but I feel confident in the install.
take a look at home assistant
Great video. I like the way you cover systems that are at the upper end of financial insanity as well as cheaper option.
Although the system looks and functions amazingly it’s not something I’d be prepared to invest my hard earned money into.
Thanks mate. That's fair enough but thanks for watching it 👍
@@CharlieDIYte no problem at all. Keep up the hard work. Videos are fantastic
This white seat won't stay white for long.
Amazingly, you can store the cushions inside when the weather is bad.
@@djstuc Well, my young friend, there are so many things that'll try to change their color, that they'd have to be kept inside pretty much all the time.
@@weekendwarrior3420 we’ve had a rattan sofa with white cushions for over 10yrs, and they are still white. Plus the material is shower proof and also washable. It’s a complete non-issue.
Saw the price and lost interest in the product. Great video though.
Thanks
More money than common sense.
Sponsored video r us.
Well overpriced, must have seen you coming
Just use cheap solar light
I suspect it won't last or provide the brightness you need but it's certainly an option.
A bit too expensive and not diy enough. Those screw on ready connectors sure are great but generic solution you wire yourself are sure cheaper.
£1700 on garden lights is just silly
Way too much money!
Not a shining endorsement of the product!
Why d'you say that?
Not great for wildlife Charlie! Some species are disoriented while others (eg bats and moths) can be seriouslt affected - just saying!
