Charlie is the little voice in your head that says "You can do this project yourself". His videos are always perfectly detailed and to a level anyone can engage with. Keep up the great work Charlie!
Normally I watch your videos together with my wife. I think I will not show here this one, I will then have to build one as well you see. Nice job. Greetings from Holland!
Fantastic content. I found this had a slightly different style to your other videos which I thought was brilliant. Nice work! I also enjoyed the dry humour 😂. Thanks Charlie 👍
Thats a nice and neat build. The colour isn't nearly as important as being with the family under the stars on those long summer nights. It will change and fade. Unlike the memories.
Great video!! Brilliant build and great to see all of your mistakes and evaluation of how it could go better for future builds. Hope all is well, take care
Charlie I'm surprised you didn't offer emporer paints to test their wood waterproofer? I haven't used it but I'm intrigued by it. Like you, i have painted my house in their hydrophobic paint and I am super impressed. It still looks fresh, and the opacity is unmatched
Hi Charlie, liking the video, the premier doesn't impact me either way. You could do a mini series of short format videos on making different clamps for DIY and I'd watch every one of them, loved the simplicity of your method here.
Thanks Eliot, really appreciate the feedback. Yes I need to return to the shorter videos. Once I've got the kitchen renovation out of the way. It's been surprisingly difficult to do a big build whilst keeping the content flowing. 👊
I used Manns decking oil on larch decking I made last year, possibly at your recommendation! I liked the golden colour, and how droplets impressively sat on the surface. But after the water evaporated it left horrible blotches, and I still don't know if it was something I'd done wrong. I'm reluctant to do it again and am letting it weather for now.
commenting for the algorithm, this was a great effort Charlie! if you feel like you need to redo it all just to get a better finish, i can do you the favour of taking this slightly orangey one off your hands
If you're planning on doing any more mortice and tenon work, I really would suggest you invest in a chisel mortiser, along with some mortice chisels. It'll be far more accurate and quicker. For the tenons, just use your mitre saw.
I've started using yacht varnish on stuff lately. Slightly darkens pine, not massively though, and I feel like finish is very durable. It is pretty glossy though, maybe you can get a less glossy version if you want that.
Yep, a lot of people swear by yacht varnish. You just have to remember it sits on the surface so you have to keep an eye out for cracks in it that the water can get through.
That larch looks beautiful and well worth the investment! Also glad to see you've discovered Wealden tools - I try to shop there before anywhere else, in a world where social media keeps shouting T**d. 😉 I enjoyed the video and the timber held its shape well through all that time in storage.
Thanks so much Olly. Really chuffed you enjoyed it as someone who clearly knows his stuff. Yes I love their stuff. V grateful to Peter Millard for that recommendation. Yes it stored beautifully, just a shame I made the wrong call on the treatment. 👊
Great build I created a thick wood outdoor table top using B and Q finest untreated timber, i think it was about 5x1. The first treatment i used was no nonsense oil and what a fail that was. I found that the ott hot weather we've had actually made it tacky and attracted dirt. I gave up on that and sanded back then a go with tinted decking oil. Was ok for a while but got grubby. Ive resigned to orbital sanding annually with no finish. An inch thick will mean it lasts for ages.
Thanks mate - appreciate the insight into your weatherproofing struggles. It's not easy is it! Have a look at that Owatrol wood and stone though. I think it could be a good option. 👊
Thanks Bill. No they're actually spot on. I messed up by not making the long ones twice the size of the corner so we've got those different sized cushions, and because the cushions are so thick it matters storage a bit of a pain but other than that we're really happy. The varnish is a disaster though - I'm going to have to strip them down completely and redo 🤦 The plans are now live incidentally buymeacoffee.com/charliediyte/e/286611
Great video as always with loads of detail. One thing about the build, I get you like the modular-ness of it all but would something like adjustable clamps to the underside to hold them in place when in the corner config be useful. I used to have corner sofa that had nothing and it constantly separated which was annoying.
Thanks Colin.. The thing is, it's heavy enough not to budge even with those back cushions being a bit wide. It literally doesn't move at all. Nice idea though. You could also screw some tension clasps on - something like this amzn.to/3WOALUX
What type of cover do you plan on using over the winter months? Is there a make that you'd recommend? In past years ones I've bought have only lasted a year.
Hi Chris, the honest answer is I haven't decided yet - and I can't recommend a make just yet given I haven't used any. First priority is to make a trunk for the cushions as they're taking up a lot of space in the house right now.
Nice work, as per … As for weather proofing the feet, I’ve given my already well-worn outdoor benches short ‘socks’ of bitumen paint in an attempt to stop rain water being absorbed into the end-grain. Not particularly pretty, but it’s not that noticeable either. Might add plastic feet at some point … we’ll see. Cheers, Charlie!
Fantastic video, just wondering are you sponsored by any of these tool brands ? I noticed through the video you have so many different brands, and take the time to talk about a couple. Thanks.
Looks great - I actually quite like the finish (am not a fan of greying wood) and the white cushions. However, I have used exactly the same oil on my oak bathroom vanity unit and its longevity has been poor unfortunately. I hope you have more luck.
Bit of a downer late in the video about the finish and the cushions. But the earlier parts about making the frames is wonderful as always Charlie. Seems to me that, if you are a beginner, making something like this, without the pressure of it being 'indoor perfect' is an excellent practice for that indoor furniture. And within that the joint-making experiences are very useful, especially the dowels 'locking' the joints. Somehting I'd not considered. But very simple. But I have one big question:- has anyone ever stopped softwood turning orange over time, apart from painting it another colour?
Yep I think that's fair to call it a downer but that's life isn't it 😉 Good question. I think this larch would definitely only grey with the right treatment. After all that's what it does on cladding - which larch is used a lot for. I found a great silicone based product online (can't remember the name) that ages it immediately but their technical guy didn't recommend it for furniture.
As for glue: just use MS polymer glue, it is strknger than the wood and fills gaps easily. The cushions I made are cold foam 45, 18cm thick, and the fabric an acrylic Sunbrella one, the best on the market but not cheap.
Sorry about that. It's going live in 40 minutes. Sorry but UA-cam is becoming a very crowded competitive place these days and Google suggests premiers as a way to grow the channel, so I'm only following orders to satisfy the algorithm.😉
@@CharlieDIYte Maybe something went wrong with youtube then as this video first appeared in my feed 2 days ago (not 40 mins). Either way, sorry if I sounded a bit grumpy, I just hate clicking through to a video only to find I cant actually watch it. And I am a big fan of your channel 😊
@@leew8812and that’s why premieres are annoying. I doubt anyone thinks “great! Id recommend Roxil for treating the wood. provides you with a really solid water repellant finish, but with an untreated wood look

you and Keith brown are kindred spirits re: packers
Have you got hedgehog entry/exit points in those fences?
The fence doesn't go round the whole perimeter - only a section of it so yes there are plenty of holes.
I did that. And ended up with 3 semi friendly foxes who call in every night and demand treats.
Hi Charlie . What do you do regarding storing your cushions , as in this country one day is never the same as the next . 👍
