We tried Macedonian (Street) Food in Lake Ohrid Macedonia (Travel Vlog & Food Tour 2021)

- In this travel vlog our 2021 Macedonian lockdown continued. Instead of being in Bitola, we were in Lake Ohrid Macedonia. Everything (even supermarkets and pharmacies) closed down at 8 pm (20:00).
Have you ever done a socially-distant scavenger hunt for food? Even if you don't want to be indoors sitting around people this is still a great way to find new food and have an exciting time. Because you can't lock down Mother Nature!
When we were in Ohrid Macedonia we jotted down a list of traditional Macedonian foods we wanted to try on a sticky note. Then we went out to find them!
We had a time-limit impossed on us since everything shut down at 8 pm (20:00); which made it more challenging.
But we found a lot of options available via take-away.
Not everything. But still a lot. And we were able to keep our social distance since we could not sit down inside restaurants.
The dishes that we tried to find this week were:
🥗 Shopska Salad: made from tomatoes, cucumbers, onion/scallions, raw or roasted peppers, sirene (white brine cheese), and parsley. (This is also Bulgaria's most famous and national salad). (𝗪𝐢𝐥𝐥'𝐬 𝐅𝐚𝐯!)
🥘 Mućkalica: stew made of barbecued meat and vegetables. Its name is derived from mućkati, meaning "to shake, stir, mix". (Also a Serbian dish).
🍲 Tavče gravče: This meal is beans, peppers, and seasoning baked and served in a traditional unglazed earthenware pot. It is considered the national dish of Macedonia. (𝐊𝐚𝐭𝐲'𝐬 𝐅𝐚𝐯!)
🌶 Ajvar: A condiment made principally from red bell peppers, eggplants, and oil. The relish became a popular side dish throughout Yugoslavia after World War II.
🥞 Mekitsa (plural: Mekici): made of kneaded dough made with yogurt that is deep fried. (Also a traditional Bulgarian dish).
🍒 Rakia (Cherry): One of the most popular spirits. Found all over the Balkans but in Macedonia they have options with a cherry flavor.

I'm impressed with some of those dishes in Macedonia, making me feel hungry over here in the UK! Good idea with the list, always good to have a game plan and smart to turn to the supermarket when needed! They've always got a traveller's back!! Stay safe during the lockdown.
The food was very good! The list definitely kept us on track; even though we got more than was on the list!

Wow I'm at minute 5:57 and have seen you going to different restaurants trying to get the things you have on your bucket list in the old bazaar plus the nice man who gave you something better to eat. Then, you guys or is it just Katy 🤔🤔🤔 who's doing the souvenir browsing. Cool.
We're still trying to get comfortable filming other people. Seems awkward. There was a lot of food options in a small area. That man was very nice to trust us with his clay pot.
@@WITYTRAVELS Just ask them if they want to be filmed 📽️. If they don't understand what you are saying, just make hand 🧤 gestures that you are filming and point at the person and use a thumbs up 👍🏻 if they want to and point at the camera too. This of course in a restaurant or shop situation. On the street you just don't keep the camera on a person while recording so they don't get cranky 😠 or angry 😡. Once in a while I get a comment or dirty look and I pay no mind. At other times I say I am only filming the area or place and not the person. If they don't like it, ah well too bad. Be careful in a mall because the malls have their privacy issues plus mall security guards to quickly intercept you in many places.

We have never heard of or seen any of the foods you guys got and that is probably one of our favorite things about traveling, the interesting foods you find around the whole 😍🌎
Yes, we are excited to try Georgia food. You should totally do a scavenger hunt in your next city. We don't do food vlogs but there we had to because there was just too much good food!

Yea, everything else came in a plastic container so that was nice of him to let us borrow the traditional pot.
You made the game plan for the day and stuck to it and accomplished the tasks, the food looked so wonderful wow makes me want to put the diet on hold for a trip there lol, but overall what an incredible day in a amazing city and as always the amazing view's are always one of my favorites so thank's witytravels for the memories !!!

Yes, we loved the view! Can't complain about "having" to eat while staring at Lake Ohrid. Yes, the fact that the man let us borrow his pot when everything else was in normal take-away containers will be a memory we will keep. It was a weird experience but travel is teaching us that we have to be ready for anything!

The lake was gorgeous! We don't do too many food vlogs because we are not very good at describing food. We said the ingredients when we could figure them out. lol

Love exploring new cuisines. We seem to have just about everything in the greater Los Angeles region, but Macedonian food, not sure I can get this locally. (If someone knows otherwise, we would be interested). Travel to Macedonia isn't in the cards for us anytime soon - but if we can grab some flavors in So. California, we're in.

Yes, that salad was awesome! Wish the mekichi was a bit warmer when we had it. What is your favorite filling in your pie? In Macedonia we only had the cheese and cheese and spinach ones.

There are dogs everywhere. Started seeing a good amount of cats lately. The sauce is Ajvar. It has eggplants, peppers and tomatoes. Would be too spicy for you.

Lol, it really ranges. You can get basic grape flavor and have a small glass, or get a whole bottle, or get all kinds of fun flavors! Worth a try for sure though.
