I'm so glad you enjoyed the food in my city! I love to see Thessaloniki get some tourist love! Especially for our food scene which is wonderful! To answer some of your questions and give some extra information: The spinach pie you were eating which you called a spanakopita (btw it's pronounced spanaKOpita and definitely not spanakoPIta haha) is of course also just called that in Greek (written σπανακόπιτα). That category of "pies" are colectively just called Pitas (just like the bread which, I know, is confusing to foreigners). So a spanakopita is just a spanaki(spinach) pita; if it had just cheese it would be a tiropita or a tiri (cheese) pita and so on. Koulouri bread that you compared to a Montreal bagel (which I totally agree is a great comparison) actually goes bad to ancient times in one form or another, but it's modern form and popularity do indeed come from when Greeks living in Anatolia (wester and norther Turkey) were forced to leave and migrate to Greece. Some tips from a greek person: The reason you did not get a wrap is because you asked for "gyro" which in greek refers to just the meat part (gyro means rotation or "around" in greek, therefore any meat cooked this way be it pork/chicken etc is called gyro) . Go to Terkenlis for tsoureki with chestnut and white chocolate! BTW why dont you visit the OTE tower for a coffee! You ll enjoy the view! Assuming you re still here in Thessaloniki of course!
Terkenlis has the worst service and the most overrated, overpriced food in Thessaloniki. I have chosen to boycott them for the rest of my life, and I recommend the same approach to anyone who loves excellent food and attentive service.
@@DelightfulTravellers Don't,Terkenlis has the worst quality, it's tasty but with the worst ingredients and the highest price. Also OTE tower is very expensive,if you want a cafeteria with great view you should go to Pasha's gardens close to the great walls of the city.
As for the greek pie in greece spinach is "spanaki" and in this dish, pie is "pita" so the dish is called "spanakopita" or sometimes "spanakotiropita" because it has feta cheese in it. You can find 1000 variations of this dish around greece as the thickness, the ingredients and the dough we use vary ,but mostly, it tastes like heaven and is sooo healthy
I don't know if you ever tried it, but next time you're in Greece and specifically, Thessaloniki, try Tsoureki with Chestnut from Terkenlis! It is the best thing ever!!!
Glad you liked my birthplace! Thessaloniki has the biggest university of the country (Aristotle) with like 75k students, that's why cheap streed food thrives. Most foods are inspired from Asia Minor which was Greek for thousands of years and today is modern Turkey, population forced to move out of there because of the massacares (my grandparents too) and opened restaurants and shops here, this is why the city has an eastern-like orientation towards most foods. Sadly if you are vegan you don't have many choices, probably you would go for a Falafel or a pita with potatoes, although last years more vegan restaurants are opening here and shows some promise.
Feta is wrapped in a thin layer of crust phyllo (yes the one used in the custard cones you ate, just salty) and fried in olive oil, or you can find it dipped in kourkouti (a mixture of plain wheat flour and water) and then fried, with the addition of sesame and honey.
14:10 Trigona Panoramatos, it means Triangles of Panorama, a suburb of Thessaloniki were this, was first made. The same shop has Tsoureki, a sweet bread, try the one with chessnut cream and white chocolate its really nice
I'm from Rhodes greece and the last store you visit (terkenlis) we don't have it.. Every time I have a friend that is visiting Thessaloniki I order to bring me some tsoureki with chestnut and chocolate... I love that so much
I think that the most common thing one can notice in "Macedonia" Airport in Thessaloniki are the nylon bags from Terkenlis filled with tsourekia (brioche like sweet pastry) people take with them in the other parts of Greece :P
You should try 0. Eat Peinirli as for breakfast. You can find them in almost all bakeries 1. Tsinari , during midday to try local alcohol called tsipouro with seafood meze 2. Try and buy the sweets called Revani (or Revani Veroias), also Galaktompoureko, the sweet bread called Tsoureki from Terkenlis and again the Trigono, but this time from the store called Elenidis. 3. A trip until Peraia Thessalonikis if the weather is good to sit next to the sea and eat fresh seafood (be aware that their English might not be good there) 4. Late during nightime in Bit Bazaar for cheap wine and later for a souvlaki or panseta in the Mama Teresa 5. You can also refer in your video on the cheap meals you can get as a student in the street called Melenikou close to the Universities, as Thessaloniki is a student town 6. Last but not least eat Crepe in Nauarinou street from Valentino. A salty Crepe with everything you might choose from the buffet over there. You will love it
Just discovered your channel today. I had a wonderful Greek vacation this summer that ended with a day in Thessaloniki before I flew to London and back home to the US. I wish I had spent more time in the city and loved your 2 videos on it, some spots I visited and some I didn't. I had the trigona dessert as well!
Well welcome aboard first off 🤗It's so great you found our channel. This city is great and get ready for a whole lot more on Greece for the next month or so - Anna
So nice video!! I am from Thessaloniki and watching the video made me want to go out and eat! We have great food all over Greece but you have to know which restaurant or shop has the best. You seem to pick the good ones! For history, trIgona is a dessert that is made from a man called Elenidis from the region Panorama Thessalonikis. So the most known trigona in town are from Elenidis. But many other dessert shops have also good ones. You also have to visit the east part of the city, like Vaphopoulou street - Sofouli street - Marina of Krini region for a nice walk and food. ( Sorry for my English guys! )
You guys are adorable, you made me miss my hometown. I love watching people enjoy it , you ate all my favourites. Thanks for taking me with you guys !! ♥️
Pita is a Greek word for pie although I think we have very different definitions of what a pie is 😂 basically it's layers of fyllo dough with different kinds of fillings. The way we name any kind of pie is by combining the main ingredient with the word pie. Hence dishes like spanakopita (spinach pie), teeropita (cheese pie) etc.
By the way the spanakopitta you ate is the village kind. (horiatiki) The pastry is homemade by aome giagia or granny and now it is sold in the supermarkets. They also make cheese pies in the same way with horiatiko filo. (village pastry). They all fall under the pie category which is quite extensive in greece and we love our pies, all sorts of them, village ones, twisted ones, crispy filo ones, round ones, with all our greek cheeses, feta, graviera, mizithra etc. or pies without filo, you name it we make it.
The best koulouri is sold by the older men selling on the streets. While visiting family I would get one almost everyday with a greek coffee. The spinach cheese pie was almost definitely spanakopita. The cheese version is called tiropita (tiri=cheese, pita=pie).

Hi guys, just to fill you in a little. The koulouri you definately can eat it with cheese. Thats how greeks eat it for breakfast or a quick lunch with a good cheese.

Trigona Panoramatos means, Panorama (a suburb of Thessaloniki) triangles (cause of the shape) !! They are creamier than bougatsa because they make it with half cow and half buffalo milk !! The older days they used 100% Buffalo milk !! Terkenlis is popular for his variety of Tsoureki (sweet fluffy bread with vanilla, mastic, cardamom and almond taste and different chocolate or other sweet stuffings)!!!! Mmmmm!!!! 😃 By the way, awesome Greek food taste/review !!!
Sorry man, but Giannis is one of the best bougatsa shops in the down town area for students that study here from other places in Greece, but if you ask the locals nobody eats from here. The best bougatsa shops are in the western side of the town e. g Bougatsa Panos and Georgos. You can even see the highest score they have amongst other shops in Thessaloniki if you do a Google search.
@@mkourouk locals also eat there,in the center maybe is the best. In the western side maybe panos and Giorgos are better but in the deep center Gianni's for me is the best,it's recommended to me by a local.

Before the Greek genocide, there were many Greeks living in Asia Minor. And they were the majority in the west and north east (Pontus) of the peninsula. Part of the genocide was the Asia Minor catastrophe in 1922 where many Greek cities and towns in ionia were burned down by the Turks. The most tragic was Smyrna, which was an architectural marble and a thriving city. There also used to be Greeks in cappadocia too up until the 20th century. In the medieval ages, the whole peninsula apart maybe from the very eastern parts of it (like commagene which continually got conquered) were Greek. These Greeks were known as Anatolian/ Asia Minor Greeks.
FabTurtel this sounds so irrational, why would the Greeks burn their own city subsequently killing their own people??? How stupid can you be that you believe everything your government teaches you, especially when there’s no logic in it?
@FabTurtel Yes yes yes....And you want from me tu believe this silly think? Are you normal? So greeks birned their city? You must remember that this country haven't history have only criminal crimes....Where are the populations who for the centuries lived in this land? Where are Greeks, where are Armenians, where are Assyrians? Can you explain not only to me bat to all the world?
I prefer the mpougatsa from Ο Σερραίος opposite the Courthouse of Thessaloniki. Especially the cheese variety. Unfortunately not the most touristy place. Unlike most people commenting here, I call the spinach pie σπακανοτυρόπιτα which means spinachcheese pie. There are spinach pies without cheese, which is what I call spanakopita. ANYWAY, great video and thank you for sharing your experiences here. I hope you had a great time and you visit again.

Τερκενλής is at a top place, the smell off the baking brioche is amazing, very nice beautiful shop but is overpriced and the quality is not so good as it was before many years there are a lot of small shops with a better quality and and better prices😃
They went to Katsamakas near Athonos Square, it is a more restaurant-y kind of place, they don't do sandwiches and it is actually a quite decent place. But yeah, they should try some more "hardcore" gyradiko (-diko is like the -sserie ending in French, means a place that sells the first part of the word) next time. The past few months I eat from Gyros tis Ellados (Giros of Greece) and Varelakia (Little Barrels), I don't know how other known places like Solomonidis and Savvikos fair nowadays.
Donner kempap, can't really say one derives from another. But they are different meat from the get go. Tomatoes in greece, well, even low quality ones ARE fresher than everything else in most countries lol. Same goes for olive oil, feta cheese, onions, spinach, dry nuts, etc. Have fun.
The only place were locals mostly eat that you show is the bougatsa place. All the other are tourist traps unfortunately imo, which is only normal since you guys wandered around down town. Next time you come here ask one of your local subscribers to show you a bit around the city. You'll be surprised at what you've been missing. Have fun travelling!

So glad you enjoyed our food! So, some more info. The first thing you ate, bougatsa, is commonly eatten with a glass of cocoa milk. Also, it's not phyllo. That dough is called bougatsa. But the filling can be cream, cheese, spinach, even minced meat. The last thing you ate, trigona panoramatos. Trigono means triangle. Panoramatos means from Panorama which is an area in Thessaloniki. And the base is phyllo which is drowned in syrop, that's why it's sticky. Katsamaka for me is one of the best places. You should have tried kokoretsi. It's amazing! Hope you tried many more kinds of food in Thessaloniki because we have so much!
Kokoretsi is something you have to aquire a taste for. Not too many people in the west will like it right away and probably spit it out lol. Goat and lamb intestines are not big in north america ; )
The pie with the spinach is "spanakopita" and the bagel "koulouri" sometimes has cheese in it and its perfect but never butter. "Trigona panoramatos" are also a favorite of mine❤
Thanks for making this video about Thessalonikis street food , mpougatsa is my favorite and i love it , sweet or not you can always eat it with cold cacao
Yes, is spanakopita with filo, and of course the cheese inside is feta, just some feta are less salty than others...its not considered as breakfast meal, but some people have it with their morning coffee to start the day at work...greek gyro is originally pork, but there is also also chicken gyro for those feel pork is a little too fatty... You should try kokoretsi and patsa, for sure both are not something you have taste before ;)
@@DelightfulTravellers yes, these two together with souvlaki gyro are my favourite take away food..Unfortunately I live abroad, so I really miss them... I also forgot to mention about the many different sort of cheese we have in Greece that are not known abroad and are so underrated...I m cheese lover, and have try cheese in many countries, and I can say that greek cheeses are quite good. In general, they are a little more salty than usual with stronger that distinctive peppery taste. Graviera, kaseri, kefalotiri (very salty), hard mizithra (my favorite) are some of the most popular...Have a good time guys, you are so enjoyable to watch, and Anna is so sweet :)
9:32 Omg trigono i wish i had one. By the way trigono Panoramatos (from Panorama) is when you buy it fromPanorama village 12 kilometers south-west from Thessaloniki. Otherwise we call them just trigono.
About the trigona panoramatos. Trigona in greek means triangle so you are eating triangles from Panorama, a suburb of Thessaloniki where a baker first started making these. Thessaloniki is famous for its trigona and no other place in Greece makes them quite like the Thessalonikans. So you were quite lucky to be trying this delicacy at its home base. Its sfoliata pastry dipped in syrup and filled with vanilla cream. Quite delicious.
Hundreds thousand of Greeks were living in Asia Minor from archeant times until 1922 when a war took place and they all have been brutally killed or forced to leave. We call it "Asia Minor catastrophe". Many of those refugees settled around Thessaloniki. Please be careful when you are in Greece and mention anything about Turkey because the story is long and painful.
@@hurguler Back then the Greek population only in Smyrna (Izmir) was bigger than the population of Athens (greek capital). Unfortunately the past is the past, life goes on.
Many more than hundreds of thousands. Even after the genocide it is 1.5m people that were forced to move and the Constantinople Greeks do not count in this number.
When I go to Thessaloniki I always go to Elenidis pastry shop for the most amazing "Trigono" a syrupy filo pastry triangle filled with the most amazing custard cream! It's a MUST!

We're not there any more but maybe next time we will. Thanks for the tip - Anna
+1 for the whit choco tsoureki!
Terkenlis has the worst service and the most overrated, overpriced food in Thessaloniki. I have chosen to boycott them for the rest of my life, and I recommend the same approach to anyone who loves excellent food and attentive service.

You should try
0. Eat Peinirli as for breakfast. You can find them in almost all bakeries
1. Tsinari , during midday to try local alcohol called tsipouro with seafood meze
2. Try and buy the sweets called Revani (or Revani Veroias), also Galaktompoureko, the sweet bread called Tsoureki from Terkenlis and again the Trigono, but this time from the store called Elenidis.
3. A trip until Peraia Thessalonikis if the weather is good to sit next to the sea and eat fresh seafood (be aware that their English might not be good there)
4. Late during nightime in Bit Bazaar for cheap wine and later for a souvlaki or panseta in the Mama Teresa
5. You can also refer in your video on the cheap meals you can get as a student in the street called Melenikou close to the Universities, as Thessaloniki is a student town
6. Last but not least eat Crepe in Nauarinou street from Valentino. A salty Crepe with everything you might choose from the buffet over there. You will love it

( Sorry for my English guys! )
My friends thank you for supporting Greece!Greek word for pie is 'pita' spinachpie=spanakopita.
ugh i LOVE seeing people from abroad trying greek good and actually liking it!!
You guys are adorable, you made me miss my hometown. I love watching people enjoy it , you ate all my favourites. Thanks for taking me with you guys !! ♥️
You're welcome 🤗- Anna
Pita is a Greek word for pie although I think we have very different definitions of what a pie is 😂 basically it's layers of fyllo dough with different kinds of fillings. The way we name any kind of pie is by combining the main ingredient with the word pie. Hence dishes like spanakopita (spinach pie), teeropita (cheese pie) etc.
THOSE STREET FOODS ARE SO DELICIOUS YUM YUM
KEEP IT UP GUYS AND KEEP SAFE ALWAYS
You are very lucky, you are in Greece and you are in Thessaloniki that is the best food destination in Greece. Enjoy
