    M3GAN is a 2022 American science fiction horror film directed by Gerard Johnstone, written by Akela Cooper from a story by Cooper and James Wan (who also produced with Jason Blum), and starring Allison Williams and Violet McGraw, with Amie Donald physically portraying M3GAN and Jenna Davis voicing the character. They put that dance scene in there because the girl who was playing M3gan is a really awesome professional dancer. And they let her design a lot of the robot's uncanny behaviors and movements. She was so good that she actually did all her own stunts. The scenes where she was running on all fours and when she rose from the ground all creepy without using her arms were all moves that she came up with that the director thought just looked cool and creepy. Those weren't special effects or CGI. She really did those things herself. Even the odd way that she moved when doing normal things was all her just using her dance knowledge to do movements in an odd, and unsettling, way. She put a lot of her dancing talent into making that character creepy, and the director encouraged her to do so.

      In terms of how it makes sense within the story, I thought it was to distract the guy while moving herself into position to grab the nearest weapon, without provoking him into running away beforehand. That's how I read the scene at least.
      Makes it even cooler knowing how much of the actors dance talent went into the character tho.

    I personally took the dance scene as M3gan performing outlandishly as a "fuck you" for the guy because everytime he was in a room with her or spoke about her he was demanding she perform a certain way. Kind of a "whats wrong, isnt this what you wanted?" situation.

    Another Fun Fact: Allison Williams revealed there's a certain unrated moment that makes her sick to her stomach. Williams said, "The unrated version is a lot of fun, if you have the stomach for it." When asked if there was a specific scene that makes her squirm, she replied, "Oh, my God. It should be when a child perishes, but at one point, someone's face loses a fight with a pressure washer and it starts to peel off. Even though I know how it works behind the scenes and I watched all the tests they did with the special effects makeup, I still get sick to my stomach when I see it. It just grosses me out. I don't do well with gore in general, so that moment is particularly gnarly to me."

      In all seriousness, I laughed more at Doug's chat with his "kid" in the car. And I normally skip that stuff to focus on the review itself. Maybe I've gotten so used to seeing Doug as Nostalgia Critic that when he delivers humour as himself, it's more funny. Honestly, I'd say that Doug is criminally underrated as an actor because Nostalgia Critic has become such a real character that seeing him just be himself is a bit like hearing David Tennant speak in his natural Scottish accent. I'm just so used to him speaking with a British accent that it throws me off when he uses his real voice.

    Fun Fact: Adrien Morot and Kathy Tse of Morot FX Studio created an animatronic puppet version of M3GAN that was used for dialogue and close-ups. There was also a second animatronic used for certain scenes, as well as a posable stunt version of M3GAN that wasn't puppeteered. The animatronic M3GAN was puppeteered via a variety of techniques, which included radio-controlled facial expressions performed by Adrien and Kathy in tandem, automated lip-sync for the dialogue (temp tracks were provided during filming by New Zealand actress Kimberley Crossman) and a puppeteer physically moving M3GAN's head and body.

  • @koneheadcokehead4981
    @koneheadcokehead4981 Рік тому +33

    A Interesting Fact: Amie Donald performed any of M3GAN's scenes that called for physical movement the puppet could not do. She also performed all of her own stunt work. Donald received movement coaching from Jed Brophy and Luke Hawker in portraying M3GAN's agility. On set, Donald wore a static silicone M3GAN mask created by Morot FX, and this was later replaced by a CGI version of M3GAN's face to match that of the animatronic.

    What Could Have Been: One of the lead writers of the film has stated how it was originally set to be R rated - much bloodier with a higher body count - but it was trimmed down and reshot to a PG-13 when it was decided it would be more effective. The decision would be supported with M3GAN gaining a following with the younger TikTok crowd. The two death scenes many suspect were cut/reshot involve the death of the child psychologist (who suddenly dissapears from the film never to be seen again), and Gemma's two coworkers that show up alive at the end of the film despite having been left to die in a burning lab.

    I was one of those who enjoyed it unironically as a pretty good analysis of the potential pitfalls of AI technology, and some of the means by which we can *avoid* those pitfalls. In particular, there are two scenes in which M3GAN tries to get better guidance from Gemma (e.g. "Will I die?" and trying to clarify what Gemma wants from her re: Cady) - and both times, she gets brushed off, resulting in her having to try muddling through complex situations on her own, and leaving Gemma horrified by the result. Something as simple as bringing an ethicist on-board during the construction/programming phase could have helped immensely.
    As for the sequel, I *really* hope it'll take something of a Terminator 2 route, where the original M3GAN('s uploaded brain) helps Gemma and/or Cady combat the inevitable army of knock-off M3GANs that the competitor will be churning out, potentially with the rationale of "Okay, no *way* am I going to stand by as this shoddy line of robots claiming to be like me run amok!"

    The CGI wasn’t as bad in theaters as it looked in the trailer. It was actually pretty seamless. I assume they went that route because they wanted her to look real enough yet still unsettling. If the girl that plays her wore the mask it’d look to fake. & if they went the route Ex Machina did, she’d look too real. Plus the 3rd act would look way more disturbing & off putting if they did that.

  • @koneheadcokehead4981
    @koneheadcokehead4981 Рік тому +1

    Another Fun Fact: The idea for the film began when James Wan's Atomic Monster Productions was brainstorming story ideas and chose one about a killer doll. Although the Wan produced film Annabelle (2014) is about a killer doll, he said, "Pretty much the concept is about embracing technology too much and relying too much on it. And what happens when technology runs amok. It's a commentary on the world we live in and it feels relevant." Jason Blum stated that the film would have black comedy elements which is one reason Gerard Johnstone was chosen to direct, saying "We needed someone who can do the thrills and set pieces, but who also has a cheeky approach." Wan admired Johnstone's film Housebound (2014) because of his ability to balance the horror and comedy elements by creating a tone that is both frightening and humorous, and this sensibility was essential for M3GAN.

Plus Violet McGraw as Cady was heartbreaking, Alison Williams channeled her acting skills from “Get Out” (compared to her subpar Peter Pan in that live show) & a I like that Megan was both animatronic but also a live actress; a nice throwback to the OG “Child’s Play”

    Just wanted to thank everyone for keeping their imaginations alive and well through the suspension of belief film that is M3GAN! Every now and then, we need entertainment that says THIS IS WHAT WE ARE, AND WE KNOW IT. SO JUST ENJOY IT 😂!
    On a side note, several UA-cam videos popped up showing behind the scenes footage of M3GAN. Seeing the work that went into making it all possible reminded me of the Cryptkeeper animatronic figure from that great anthology series. When you get caught up in the tale, the host comes off as genuinely creepy and funny all at once. Yeah, he's got the undead vibe and hideous face. But he's not completely evil when reminding kiddies that their actually watching morality tales.
    Same goes with this film. I mean, let's be real, A.I. has always come with negative connotations. No piece of horror or Sci-fi would work if sentient beings were all good. They come from complex humans, and therefore, will develop complex attitudes about life. We just never learn...😂
