Your prairie is BEAUTIFUL and a wonderful habitat for all those wild things. Thank you for creating such a large piece of habitat. It's helping countless little critters we need and love so much.

What an informative video. I have high hopes for creating a meadow-like area in my back yard. Right now we have a healthy crop of slate! Nothing like living on Flintstone Mountain in a rock quarry! Ah... a project!

Wow. That is informative! I didn’t know that starting a prairie had so many steps. I’m willing to try but mine will be a yard prairie. Natural prairie is so calming.

@@SeasonalDesignsbyDawn wonderful information. I checked out both websites and requested a catalog from one. I am inspired by yoy to create a Prairie somewhere on my property. We live in high desert and weeds are completely unruly so it might be a hard sell to my hubby. I'm assuming like all else in the garden, the healthier and fuller it is, the less chance weeds will have to spread.

Lovely video. Have a 3 acre meadow where the Canadian golden rod has become a problem with bullying out some of the other native plants. Agree that it looks stunning this time of year when all in flower but any tips you could share as to how you are handling your own golden rod issues would be appreciated. Meadow has been established close to 20 years and also in zone 5 in Wisconsin. Thanks for sharing.

I have tried cutting it while in full bloom 3 years in a row as it was suggested to me by a prairie expert that could help diminish it but it’s not helping. Next up I’m going to try glyphosate wearing rubber gloves with a cloth glove over one hand. Spray on the cloth and rub over stalks. That I can do in new areas where it’s not very thick yet.

Amazing information and such thought put into your own idyllic prairie.
I really enjoyed learning about the steps, the burn off is interesting.
Is it to add potash to the soil?
    Jo.😊

Thank you. Fire plays a critical role in maintaining a healthy prairie ecosystem. We use prescribed fire to control woody vegetation, to manage invasive species and to stimulate native plant growth.

Beautiful, that is a site to behold. Could you tell me the names of the tall plant with blue flowers at 0:08, and the plant with purple flowers at 3:52?

Thank you. The first is salvia azurea (blue sage) and the 2nd is purple prairie clover. You can find both on this sites I mentioned 😊. Thanks for watching!!

I bought property in the sans bois mountains of oklahoma. About 2 miles east of robbers cave state park. I have a question. Would it be natural/possible to start a small pasture/prairie in the mountains? Haven't even seen the property yet but I know it's mostly young trees not more than 20-30 feet tall. So the land isn't a full forest yet. Would clearing an acre or two, and starting a prarie be a good idea?
Basically, can I/should I start a mountain top prairie? Good video! Thanks!

Hello! I’m not sure what it’s like there? I’m guessing if you can get seeds of plants and grasses in your area it should work.

@SeasonalDesignsbyDawn thanks for the reply. I've since started doing more research. Currently reading through a book called "farming the woods" by Ken Mudge and Steve Gabriel. Very cool book. The more research i do, the more I see how messed up our agricultural system is, and how harmful most farming techniques are. Your prairie fields are very inspiring and beautiful! Thank you for the info!
