When these are well maintained, they’re awesome. True there’s the connecting rod bearing issue that occurs at around 50k miles but as long as preventative maintenance is done they’re are awesome. I know there are a few problems (diff, SMG, the afore mentioned rod bearings) but as long as they are looked after they are wonderful cars. While the dct would be a much better performing transmission, the SMG can be fun and adds character to the car, it just takes a lot of practice to be smooth with it. I will confess though, Idrive is pretty slow and has a bit of a learning curve but it still gets the job done. Also, you don’t buy one of these for the infotainment system. Crazy build idea: put in a dct, twin turbos or supercharger, and the F90 M5’s trick all wheel drive system.
At that point, just get an f10. The e60 is special and doesn't need to act like new cars that just make up power with turbos and a tune.
Buddy Blair or swap a s85 into an f90
If you get the manual the only thing to worry is the crankshaft

Hope all those sounds were made by nice warm engines, at least 15 or more minutes of warming up. Properly treated, these engines are a lot more reliable than generally believed, but too much inexperience and showmanship in the field, leading to expensive repair work.
