- Live from the Old Grey Whistle Test in 1977 during the Fourplay Tour, very rare footage of the band perform the track ‘Pick It Up & Kick It’
Hugh McKenna - Lead Vocals / Keyboards
Zal Cleminson - Guitar
Chris Glen - Bass
Ted McKenna - Drums
Good number. Zal Cleminson, finest rock guitar!
Zal is amazing; true guitar god
I’m an old fart 61 year old musician and I don’t want to diss new music .. everything is of its time but i really miss ‘ character’s’ and personality like SAHB had by the bucketload.
What a great band then, what a great band now. God bless SAHB
I fully agree with you on that! Zal Cleminson is a guitarists guitarist and really should have enjoyed more fame and recognition.
If I hadn't just watched this I would have guessed that there were two guitarists
I don’t know about anyone else, but I get a really strong Steely Dan vibe from this song. Loved SAHB with and without Alex, hugely talented group of musicians.
So glad I came across this fantastic performance. Love the bass line Chris is laying down
Zal was hugely underrated as a guitarist as demonstrated by this number. He is up there with best of the generation.
Absolutely.
I think the last and only time I heard this was this prog in '77 but I still remember it, I loved SAHB
that kicked ass....Zal...is ...ripping it....!!awesome guitar...
I saw SAHB in Plymouth in 77. Chris Glenn’s bass was so loud and resonant that some people went outside to throw up. Killer show, will never forget it.
Oh man, It sucks with the passing of Ted Mckenna!!! SAHB are one of those bands that were in the right place at the wrong time! They should be reveared more than they are as they could fucking take ANY band on in the music ring! They truly were and are still shit hot!
Zal is one of my favorite guitarists, as he is so unpredictable, just when you think what he's playing will go this way, he throws a curve ball and just leaves flumoxed!
Hugh does a cracking job on vocals. chris is pumping some sweet bass...
What I'm trying to say is...SAHB ARE THE DOGS BONER
Hugh is now gone as well unfortunately
Awesome
I am shocked, i never knew Ted Mckenna had passed away!! i use to love Alex Harvey big fan, saw them many times, Zal in his clown make up ,best live band ever!! really miss going to the concerts, this video sounds great, love the guitar .
...outstanding album ...saw them live at The Marquee, London in 76
Can't get my head around SAHB without Alex.
Can't get my head around ZC without his makeup...
And his short hair too. I dug his afro.
I get it, having seeing him here and with Nazareth
@@gurgisjones1120 And he's still going with Sin Dogs.
В этом макияже есть что-то магическое.
The guy has as many facial expressions in his repertoire as his guitar has notes
Even Zal's jumper is badass
No coincidence that Captain Sensible & The Damned are so theatrical & have their 'uniforms'!
The whole band absolutely kick ass and are tighter than a camels bum in a sand storm! Saw them in the 70's and they were far better than any band for entertainment at that time! Zal is one hell of a guitarist and one of the best ever in my opinion....
I saw them live too. Both with and without Alex. Excellent shows. Sadly they were very under appreciated I think.
*SAHB were one of my grandpa's best loved bands, I love them too. Zal ? What can you say, sigh ..._*
And Chris Glenn Rockin' the bass.He had the best hair in Rock & Roll back then.
Just call me grandpa, I s'pose 🤣😂😎
Your Grandpa had great taste in Music
RIP Ted Mackenna
What a great band.
I wish this would come out on cd
I saw them two nights at the marquee club and at the rainbow. Awesome band without Alex. Amazing with alex
Love this whole album
It's a hidden gem. Hard rocking with Hugh's hooks and jazz rock flourishes. I hadnt heard it in decades until last year, and now its a regular. I love the fact its just 8 great songs and no filler. Vambo rools okay..but not here. Rock on..👊
Love that album!
Great musicians.
The entire album is a 💎.
Lyrics
If the man sitting next to you offers you a light
You'd better be oh so careful of the people you meet
Yes the world is turning and the beat goes on
You know a subway train is no place to get down
Pick it up and kick it
Twelve o'clock midnight and you're dancing
In an uptown bar
You do the continental
With a neighbourhood star
The girls are all green with envy
And baby you're so frail
The dice have been thrown away
And you're setting sail
Pick it up and kick it
Are you tired of the young and rich
Three years on
You can't say what you really feel
'Cause you're too far gone
All your dreams are faded
Still the beat goes on
Let me help pretty lady
Let you live again
Pick it up and kick it
Very out stream. It's not underrated or something. It's just real true band. They did it for themselves to get fun. That is why huge respect.
The same song with different sound can be turned into very popular.
Pretty fantastic, it must be said.
Great band! even before Alex joining them. Ted, such a great drummer! This one has a kinda Little Feat groove. I wonder if the groove with ‘pick it up’ was intentional because they were into LF. Bands like this sadly missed. 🏴
Great musicians with or without Alex . SAHB was Alexander's vision. 'The Mafia Stole My Guitar' & (the posthumously released) 'Soldier on the Wall' albums by Alex & other musicians are worthwhile additions to fans of Alex.
Zal's facial expressions are more sinister without the mime get up
That badge ear ring might have been a bit painful to wear.
Ammazza che voce Hugh ♥️
They were a band in their own right, with or without Alex
Great seeing that! Saw them in Carlisle - completely forgotten about it!
great band
Holy shit . never seen this before.
Zal Cleminson’s really strong. He didn’t exactly embrace the concept of rhythm guitar, did he?
Incredible
Замечательно!!
Местами параллель с Edgar Winter Group.
Good stuff! Great band!
Most people find mimes obnoxious. I love mimes! I miss the makeup. And Alex. Great anyway!
Nice...but why did they play/tour without Alex Harvey?
Alex was in rehab and also working on his Loch Ness monster project….Alex was behind the scenes on this album as well tho…Zal told me he was in the studio when the recorded it and can be seen on the back cover gagged n tied up as a joke because he’s not on it….
Classic
..I see double bass drums, I like.
ZAL EFFING CLEMINSON --- NO PEERS!
Alex was SAHB
I believe each member of the band was the same…they needed each other to be sensational…
SAHB gets funky, they can play anything. One of the very best live bands from the 1970s.
This music and LP not my cup of tea though.
Zal here 'without' makeup, but 'with' a bit more freedom to play, it seems
Zal has a similar look to Fee Waybill of The Tubes…
- "Too Much American Pie" --
A fine, fine funky tune...but was never going to happen for SAHB(WA), with UK in the grip of The Punk Wars. Kids thinking "SAHB(WA) or The Clash?" No contest, regretfully.
SAHB without Alex?
No thanks
There is a reason it was called The Sensational Alex Harvey Band……this ain’t that nor does it come close.
SAHB were under contract and due to Alex’s health and solo project about the Loch Ness monster, the band had to record an album…Alex was apparently with the lads from time to time when recording it hence why it’s called SAHB (without Alex)
@@davidcowanofficial you obviously don’t know how bands work…band breaks up…end of contract…..but does not have a bit of influence on the fact that it was a totally different band…..they kept the name because they did not want to lose their paying audience….and they did when they put out this effort under the SAHB brand….they should have changed their name back to their original name before Alex Harvey took them for his band….this was not a organically put together band of friends…..this was a band Alex Harvey heard and knew he could mold them into what he was hearing and as a composer…..for SAHB fans…..this was ……truly disappointing….you know…kind of like David Bowie and the Spiders From Mars….but without David Bowie.
@@petersokol1603 - I understand fully how bands work..I was in a band with both Zal Cleminson and Chris Glen and that’s what they told me…the band hadn’t split up, they were on a break - that’s why after that album they recorded SAHB Stories and Rock Drill before finally calling it a day….
When they played live they done a few songs from the SAHB catalogue as well - I have recordings of some of the shows from 1977
@@davidcowanofficial I remember this coming out and being disappointed because I always felt that the band minus Alex would be interesting. Instead of the rock album I was expecting, I got a soul-funk, not quite there, bit of a disappointment album. But over the years this has grown on me, track by track. No, I don't play it everyday or every month but it does get played and it does get taken on long journeys because it isn't that bad, and my tastes have mellowed. I enjoyed the footage of Pick It Up and Kick It and will find Smouldering too. Bootlegs?
@@andymurray9811 - it was not one of my favourites at first to be honest but I remember Ted McKenna letting me hear smouldering in college and he played the groove on the kit to me and I was like I love this…some great tracks on it like ‘Love You For A Lifetime’, Pick It Up and Kick It, and of course smouldering…Outer Boogie is decent as well..I think it’s grown over the years…
With regards to bootlegs - I know there were one or two kicking about from the university circuit they did in 1977 but I don’t have it
not my favorite by any means , i feel the band were like a run of the mill band of the time , it shows how much they needed Alex and his inventive lyrics .and i love the guys as most of you will know . just got to be said. out of all the sounds this is taken my least favorite album. no energy .
All brilliant musicians all the same, can't blame them for trying something different. Alex was Unique & needed Tear Gas for his Sensational project. 👌
This is some sad shit
Seems you've now reconciled to admit it?
Loads of Zappa, influence
