I'm one of the viewers you addressed in the beginning - not at all into hunting (and a long time vegetarian), and wasn't looking forward to this content. I decided to watch anyway, and I'm glad that I did. I've mostly known people who hunt for sport and I honestly think there's something wrong with people who get a kick out of killing anything. This is clearly not what Barron is doing. And having watched your journey for a while now, I feel confident that if he were to kill an elk, you would find a way to use everything possible and do so with honor. I will never be a hunter, and I'll never eat an animal again. But I respect what you are doing. Thank you for sharing.
I agree...against Trophy hunting period, but killing animals to eat, i have no issue with, even though its not for me...Ive eaten Gator, Quail, Deer and Seafood and even Armadillo Yes tasted like chicken...but Hunting isnt for me..Good luck on your adventures from Florida 🌴🍊🐊😊

I want to share my perspective as a hunter that comes from a family that owns farm land, and I hope my comments brings you some joy and peace. I am going to speak in generalities as I know there are always exceptions. Most hunters and especially land owners respect animals. Most hunters are animal advocates who either support organizations that create habitat or create animal habitat on our own lands, with the purpose of creating and sustaining animal life; to create more animal life than what is harvested, a net gain. I do not hunt when populations are down. As Barron mentioned, most hunters express excitement when the animal is harvested due to the success of the hunt, effort, and ability to provide food, but not due to the death of the animal. Most hunters feel a sincere loss at the kill, and have a deep appreciation for the harvested animal. Most hunters take extreme care to only take shots at the animal that will kill the animal instantaneously and therefore will not feel any pain. Also, animal adrenaline will eliminate pain for several minutes to allow most animals to pass in painless peace. I am glad this channels allows us all to share our perspectives and learn from each other. I will never be a vegetarian , but I have learned to appreciate many of Elsa's healthy concoctions.
I agree with ashya comment. I'm Cherokee Indian. We need videos like this to keep the our children interested in the land and animals unity. To respect the land and our ancestors. I enjoy your content very much.

My grandfather used to hunt this way. He grew up having to hunt out of necessity, and even as he was able to afford the luxury of a grocery store, he never lost the deeply spiritual connection to the process and the land. I’m not a meat eater, but it’s beautiful to see the deep respect and reverence for food continue.

Being alone at this time of year is difficult I too am in the same boat. Just finished a 4 mile walk, it is mentally and also secondarily physically uplifting. Just a thought for you. I know it doesn’t help with the loneliness but we need to start working on ourselves first and then we can reach out to others. At least that is what’s happening to me. Merry Christmas

I have been watching you guys for a while and all my family are hunters. And seeing how you had so much respect learning the elk it only shows how much you have respect for animals. People who just want to kill anything don't care and don't take the time to learn this . This makes me just love you guys even more. ❤

I cannot begin to explain the confusion that arises so often with my friends when I explain the processing of hunting and how it can be ethical and resourceful it can be. The imposter syndrome feels real sometimes. In the future, I’m going to show them this video. Thank you for sharing.
Geez, I don't know why, but I almost started crying watching this - toward the end when Barron was explaining the experience and such. I think part of me is heartbroken that he didn't get one, but also happy that he learned a LOT and now understands why hunters are so happy for their kills, but also just in general at the reverence ya'll have for life in general. Whether animals, people, or nature all around. And I like the sound of Barron's voice too when he narrates and it'd be cool if he got in to narrating for like wildlife shows or such. Elsa as well, because she has a calming voice and I think would do great. Barron's tone though is just something soothing, hard to explain. While he doesn't sound the same as Anthony Bourdain , there is a similarity to my ears and it's calming (I'd fall asleep listening to No Reservations, Part's Unknown and such)
Thank you for this video. I am not a hunter, and I am older and very aware that I will never have the opportunity to experience anything like this. I have always felt that this would be an excellent skill to have learned. In our ever changing world, it would give me comfort to know I could provide a food source for myself and my loved ones. I also feel that it is a great responsibility to hunt and yet it is a gift we were given since the beginning of time. I really appreciate the information and knowledge that Barron shares. I've followed you for many years, and have had jaw-dropping moments of awe over your talented editing. I rooted for your through your ups and downs, but most of all learned from you. So I do feel like sharing my thoughts and feelings on this, since you sound genuinely interested. That gorgeous elk ran through your camp and startled you, leaving you alone and not threatening you for a reason. It's a respect for life. I believe the elk deserved the same respect in return. I believe it is wrong to take another life on this planet unless there is imminent danger, an immediate serious risk of death. While I appreciate the warning on the video, I watched and gave it a chance as you suggested.
EXCELLENT video! It truly addresses the reality (and responsibility) of "the hunt". My husband hunted for years, and found bow hunting his choice. The season lasts longer and requires more of you (the hunter). Grouse is delicious, and got a lump in my throat when Barron thanked the grouse! 💖
Ain't that the way it so often goes: you go looking for elk and don't find them, but back home you get pack rats under your outhouse. Great video. I did learn a lot. We're familiar with herds of elk wandering through people's yards on the Oregon coast. Thank goodness you found a more challenging place to ply your craft.

I'm an 80 yr old traditional bow hunter, learn from your mistakes, first use the bull call to locate only unless it's the rut and then that makes them mad. Once you locate them sneek closer while using cow calls. If you then use the bull call, the cows already have a bull, but cow calls are a calming call to all of the elk, not putting them on alert. Also when using the bull call try to sound like a very immature spike elk and the herd bull might decide to run you off his territory, also when doing the calling, mews stay back about 40 yds or so hoping the the bull will be heading to the caller giving the shooter a better shot while the bull is honing in on the caller. They are very very good at pin pointing sounds in their terrane, You did well for the first time, but if you learn from all your mistakes eventually the wind will be in your face, he will go by you, hold your breath, relax and hit the arrow home in the pocket, dropping in about 40 yds. It makes it all worth it, I love your videos great job, Jim las vegas nv, I shot bear in Calif, in 1969 and was the only one to do so, good hunting my friend
What an informative and educational video! Your sensitivity towards other’s emotions, with the thought of killing an animal was appreciated. A few years ago, I watched a video how cows and chickens where processed, I couldn’t eat that meat for two years, I was heartbroken! I started not to feel well, went back to eating meat, but I came back with an appreciation for life. When I go through a drive through I have a deeper reverence and thankfulness, that we all to often take for granted. I’m not a hunter, but I love to fish. Barron your last comment resonated with me, and I’m so glad now I can see through that lens. When I would go on Facebook and see a family member gleaming with joy, holding up the head of a buck they just killed, I felt what u described. Now I can “like” there post and say, congratulations, cause I had never thought of it in that way, I didn’t know all that was involved. Thanks for changing my perspective and taking us on you journey.
Ancestors??? When we lived in Vermont,we survived on venison through out the winter, every winter,raised my children on it. If it wasn't for the venison we processed there would be no meat to eat,many people still survive off the land,if it wasn't for that buck we would of gone hungry.

One last comment... you choosing to hunt with a bow is so very admireable and is the only way to go as far as I am concerned. Hunting with high power guns with scopes is simply not really hunting. It doesn't put you and the animal on an even playing field as the animal doesn't really stand a chance once sighted and within range. Hunting with a bow is how the Natives hunted. It puts you in touch with the reality of the entire experience. You tend to go deeper into it. That's a fact.
I love how much heart baron puts into his hunt. He has a huge heart for animals and life in general and it shows! Sorry you didn't get an elk but the knowledge you now have will last you a lifetime ❤

I think that if people had to hunt/kill their own meat, it would be a better solution for everyone… it’s a hard thing to do, and completely changes the way I look at my food

Not a hunter. Don’t want to be a hunter (although I wouldn’t mind fishing)… and I found this video incredibly interesting. It’s inspiring to watch and hear the technical side of hunting that seems to bring one closer to the rhythms of nature… and rather than ravaging her it showed her honor, celebrated her beauty and increased our knowledge and appreciation of the only earth we have. I'm an animal lover and don't eat meat and don't think I could ever try hunting, but I can respect what real hunters do who are responsible and have respect for the animals they hunt. There is a weird part of me that is fascinated by all this - I've watched a few videos from Outddors Allie here on UA-cam, you should check out her content. I was born and spent most of my 70+ years in Idaho and was taught early in my life about hunting. This was an excellent video watching you learn that hunting is a much deeper experience than just the harvesting of the animal that you are pursuing. I very much enjoyed this video. Thank you.

My mom grew up on ,chickens, chicken eggs, grouse, rabbit, moose and deer meat. She lived in Michigan and all her brothers and dads went hunting and fishing. She didn't have beef until she 19 and moved away from home. She did not live in the country. They had a chicken coop and rabbit hut in the backyard.
CO out of state tags are no joke. For two years I purchased Cow tags at $500 each, but with the cost of using an outfitter, travel, etc. and the tag… it’s about $10 per pound of organic meat that can last for 2 years.

My husband hunts whitetail deer here in upstate NY. It was so interesting to see how the process is different depending upon what animal you are hunting and the land you are hunting on. Hubby is fortunate to be able to hunt on his buddy’s family property for the past 25+ years. Their process is much more “sit and wait” compared to yours. Having Tyler to learn from will be a great help to Baron. We have started trying to tan the deer hides in recent years. I could totally see Elsa Rhae tanning a hide and making things out of it!
My father was the son of a farmer. When I was young, we (my family of 7) went out in the country and picked bushels of vegetables, such as of beans, peas, corn, peanuts, cucumbers, squash, potatoes, etc. It was an all day event each time because we came home shelled and shucked, cleaned and prepared for canning, while my mom and dad canned vegetables (root vegetables were stored differently). We had a family garden for things grown in smaller quantities such as tomatoes, watermelon, cantalope, carrots, and zucchinni, as well as trees like apples, pears, plums, crab apples, figs, and pecans. We used permaculture but nobody called it that, and my mother went to the grocery store every couple of weeks. I leaned how to handle a chicken from about 7 or 8 years of age, but I saw chickens killed and processed when very young. Learned to shoot and hunt around 11 - 12 years as my father hunted, too. Personally I prefer a diet of mostly vegetables, but still seem to physically crave lean meat occasionally. I was taught respect for land, plants/trees, animals, and other human beings, as well as resources in general. My mother and father lived through the Great Depression and World War II and understood these matters. I wish I was a vegetarian but currently eat a diet dependent on food that is readily accessible, healthy or not, due to health circumstances. I have the utmost respect for vegetarians and vegans. To me these things are spiritual and must be treated with respect. But I think vegans (and vegetarians) make everything smell and look soooo delicious. My best wishes to you Elsa and Barron.
This was a beautifully documented video. Gave me a glimpse of the true nature of hunting and hunters mentality. I didn’t realize how much perseverance goes into it. You gained more than you can imagine and I believe when you get your first elk it will be special on a whole new level of appreciation. God bless you guys.
This reminds me of my Cousin hunting whitetail in Wisconsin. Unlike most hunters he would put in the time all summer long to scout the animals and learn their habits in the area he was going to hunt. By the time hunting season came around in the fall he knew exactly where they would be. Sometimes even having chosen which animal he was going for. Granted there are a hell of a lot of deer in Wisconsin so success rates are higher. This was decades before trail cameras, GPS etc. I rarely remember him not having filled his tag in the first couple days of both gun and bow season. My cousin was a great outdoorsman. He at the time was a gunsmith and spent a great deal of his free time in the woods.
My dad is one of those people that pay thousands to be taken onto private land and have a guide show him. He's come back with 3 elk. I often wonder the amount of work that would go into it without the hide or private land. Thank you baron for showing the world the harsh truth of Hunting. Thank you Elsa for the editing and sticking by your hubby for that moment. Also, thank you for putting this material out despite people who are against hunting. I too believe it is the circle of life and sometimes the truth is we respect the animal even if we use it at fuel for us. Thank you again, both of you!
So many positives out weigh the one disappointment of not getting an elk. I'd take a few days out in nature verses chained to a desk hands down. IMHO, there's a huge difference in subsistence hunting and trophy hunting. I really enjoyed the video and I hope you continue to do you and not worry too much about pleasing the masses. Barron, no need to explain anything to us. I've learned so much today and I, for one, will always be grateful the experience.
Sitting here watching this and towards the end listening to the elk calls and my 4y/o asked me what he was hearing so I told him. His eyes lit up and said "That is so cool. Can I listen again" Thank you for the video of your experience. I hunt just black tail deer and empathize with not getting anything. The knowledge gained though is so invaluable. Geez, I don't know why, but I almost started crying watching this - toward the end when Barron was explaining the experience and such. I think part of me is heartbroken that he didn't get one, but also happy that he learned a LOT and now understands why hunters are so happy for their kills, but also just in general at the reverence ya'll have for life in general. Whether animals, people, or nature all around. And I like the sound of Barron's voice too when he narrates and it'd be cool if he got in to narrating for like wildlife shows or such. Elsa as well, because she has a calming voice and I think would do great. Barron's tone though is just something soothing, hard to explain. While he doesn't sound the same as Anthony Bourdain , there is a similarity to my ears and it's calming (I'd fall asleep listening to No Reservations, Part's Unknown and such)
Thank you for this video. I am not a hunter, and I am older and very aware that I will never have the opportunity to experience anything like this. I have always felt that this would be an excellent skill to have learned. In our ever changing world, it would give me comfort to know I could provide a food source for myself and my loved ones. I also feel that it is a great responsibility to hunt and yet it is a gift we were given since the beginning of time. I really appreciate the information and knowledge that Barron shares. I've followed you for many years, and have had jaw-dropping moments of awe over your talented editing. I rooted for your through your ups and downs, but most of all learned from you. So I do feel like sharing my thoughts and feelings on this, since you sound genuinely interested. That gorgeous elk ran through your camp and startled you, leaving you alone and not threatening you for a reason. It's a respect for life. I believe the elk deserved the same respect in return. I believe it is wrong to take another life on this planet unless there is imminent danger, an immediate serious risk of death. While I appreciate the warning on the video, I watched and gave it a chance as you suggested.
EXCELLENT video! It truly addresses the reality (and responsibility) of "the hunt". My husband hunted for years, and found bow hunting his choice. The season lasts longer and requires more of you (the hunter). Grouse is delicious, and got a lump in my throat when Barron thanked the grouse! 💖
Ain't that the way it so often goes: you go looking for elk and don't find them, but back home you get pack rats under your outhouse. Great video. I did learn a lot. We're familiar with herds of elk wandering through people's yards on the Oregon coast. Thank goodness you found a more challenging place to ply your craft.

I'm an 80 yr old traditional bow hunter, learn from your mistakes, first use the bull call to locate only unless it's the rut and then that makes them mad. Once you locate them sneek closer while using cow calls. If you then use the bull call, the cows already have a bull, but cow calls are a calming call to all of the elk, not putting them on alert. Also when using the bull call try to sound like a very immature spike elk and the herd bull might decide to run you off his territory, also when doing the calling, mews stay back about 40 yds or so hoping the the bull will be heading to the caller giving the shooter a better shot while the bull is honing in on the caller. They are very very good at pin pointing sounds in their terrane, You did well for the first time, but if you learn from all your mistakes eventually the wind will be in your face, he will go by you, hold your breath, relax and hit the arrow home in the pocket, dropping in about 40 yds. It makes it all worth it, I love your videos great job, Jim las vegas nv, I shot bear in Calif, in 1969 and was the only one to do so, good hunting my friend
What an informative and educational video! Your sensitivity towards other’s emotions, with the thought of killing an animal was appreciated. A few years ago, I watched a video how cows and chickens where processed, I couldn’t eat that meat for two years, I was heartbroken! I started not to feel well, went back to eating meat, but I came back with an appreciation for life. When I go through a drive through I have a deeper reverence and thankfulness, that we all to often take for granted. I’m not a hunter, but I love to fish. Barron your last comment resonated with me, and I’m so glad now I can see through that lens. When I would go on Facebook and see a family member gleaming with joy, holding up the head of a buck they just killed, I felt what u described. Now I can “like” there post and say, congratulations, cause I had never thought of it in that way, I didn’t know all that was involved. Thanks for changing my perspective and taking us on you journey.
Ancestors??? When we lived in Vermont,we survived on venison through out the winter, every winter,raised my children on it. If it wasn't for the venison we processed there would be no meat to eat,many people still survive off the land,if it wasn't for that buck we would of gone hungry.
Your care and concern in this video content is apparent throughout, not just a quick disclaimer at the beginning. Taking the whole month is key, and really is what it is all about: time in the outdoors. Preseason time and observation will now be even sweeter. Each day is an experience and a gift, enough said.

One last comment... you choosing to hunt with a bow is so very admireable and is the only way to go as far as I am concerned. Hunting with high power guns with scopes is simply not really hunting. It doesn't put you and the animal on an even playing field as the animal doesn't really stand a chance once sighted and within range. Hunting with a bow is how the Natives hunted. It puts you in touch with the reality of the entire experience. You tend to go deeper into it. That's a fact.
I love how much heart baron puts into his hunt. He has a huge heart for animals and life in general and it shows! Sorry you didn't get an elk but the knowledge you now have will last you a lifetime ❤

Not a hunter. Don’t want to be a hunter (although I wouldn’t mind fishing)… and I found this video incredibly interesting. It’s inspiring to watch and hear the technical side of hunting that seems to bring one closer to the rhythms of nature… and rather than ravaging her it showed her honor, celebrated her beauty and increased our knowledge and appreciation of the only earth we have. Great job.

I'm an animal lover and don't eat meat and don't think I could ever try hunting, but I can respect what real hunters do who are responsible and have respect for the animals they hunt. I was born and spent most of my 70+ years in Idaho and was taught early in my life about hunting. This was an excellent video watching you learn that hunting is a much deeper experience than just the harvesting of the animal that you are pursuing. I very much enjoyed this video. Thank you.

My mom grew up on ,chickens, chicken eggs, grouse, rabbit, moose and deer meat. She lived in Michigan and all her brothers and dads went hunting and fishing. She didn't have beef until she 19 and moved away from home. She did not live in the country. They had a chicken coop and rabbit hut in the backyard.
CO out of state tags are no joke. For two years I purchased Cow tags at $500 each, but with the cost of using an outfitter, travel, etc. and the tag… it’s about $10 per pound of organic meat that can last for 2 years.

My husband hunts whitetail deer here in upstate NY. It was so interesting to see how the process is different depending upon what animal you are hunting and the land you are hunting on. Hubby is fortunate to be able to hunt on his buddy’s family property for the past 25+ years. Their process is much more “sit and wait” compared to yours. Having Tyler to learn from will be a great help to Baron. We have started trying to tan the deer hides in recent years. I could totally see Elsa Rhae tanning a hide and making things out of it!

My father was the son of a farmer. When I was young, we (my family of 7) went out in the country and picked bushels of vegetables, such as of beans, peas, corn, peanuts, cucumbers, squash, potatoes, etc. It was an all day event each time because we came home shelled and shucked, cleaned and prepared for canning, while my mom and dad canned vegetables (root vegetables were stored differently). We had a family garden for things grown in smaller quantities such as tomatoes, watermelon, cantalope, carrots, and zucchinni, as well as trees like apples, pears, plums, crab apples, figs, and pecans. We used permaculture but nobody called it that, and my mother went to the grocery store every couple of weeks. I leaned how to handle a chicken from about 7 or 8 years of age, but I saw chickens killed and processed when very young. Learned to shoot and hunt around 11 - 12 years as my father hunted, too. Personally I prefer a diet of mostly vegetables, but still seem to physically crave lean meat occasionally. I was taught respect for land, plants/trees, animals, and other human beings, as well as resources in general. My mother and father lived through the Great Depression and World War II and understood these matters. I wish I was a vegetarian but currently eat a diet dependent on food that is readily accessible, healthy or not, due to health circumstances. I have the utmost respect for vegetarians and vegans. To me these things are spiritual and must be treated with respect. But I think vegans (and vegetarians) make everything smell and look soooo delicious. My best wishes to you Elsa and Barron.

This reminds me of my Cousin hunting whitetail in Wisconsin.
Unlike most hunters he would put in the time all summer long to scout the animals and learn their habits in the area he was going to hunt. By the time hunting season came around in the fall he knew exactly where they would be. Sometimes even having chosen which animal he was going for.
Granted there are a hell of a lot of deer in Wisconsin so success rates are higher.
This was decades before trail cameras, GPS etc.
I rarely remember him not having filled his tag in the first couple days of both gun and bow season.
My cousin was a great outdoorsman. He at the time was a gunsmith and spent a great deal of his free time in the woods.
My dad is one of those people that pay thousands to be taken onto private land and have a guide show him. He's come back with 3 elk. I often wonder the amount of work that would go into it without the hide or private land. Thank you baron for showing the world the harsh truth of Hunting. Thank you Elsa for the editing and sticking by your hubby for that moment.
Also, thank you for putting this material out despite people who are against hunting. I too believe it is the circle of life and sometimes the truth is we respect the animal even if we use it at fuel for us. Thank you again, both of you!

So many positives out weigh the one disappointment of not getting an elk. I'd take a few days out in nature verses chained to a desk hands down. IMHO, there's a huge difference in subsistence hunting and trophy hunting. I really enjoyed the video and I hope you continue to do you and not worry too much about pleasing the masses. Barron, no need to explain anything to us. I've learned so much today and I, for one, will always be grateful the experience.
