You might change your mind about no trespassing and no hunting signs around hunting season. In Oregon, my husband was working on our roof wearing a bright orange sweatshirt and a bullet just missed him and hit the roof. Drunk hunters can kill you or your animals. If you have no trespassing than legally that counts as a legal warning, from there someone could be arrested for criminal trespass. If everyone was nice and respectful it wouldn't be necessary. But some people are just self-entitled and don't care. Some people may think that your land is open for hunting. A no trespassing warning is usually not considered rude in rural areas, just the owner protecting his property and safety. I've had problems with careless hunters in the past.

What a nightmare! I am SO sorry this happened to your dogs/family. That boy sounds like a textbook case...he will escalate from torturing/killing animals to harming humans-and sickeningly, they also escalate to sexual abuse. Hope y'all have installed good camera's around your property. It's easy to research what I've said by researching serial killers and things they did in their childhood/youth. PS- His parents will regret they didn't do something. He needs help. ASAP!

I would definitely suggest getting a gps tracker for Kamp as it might not be the only time he goes exploring on his own with so much space to see. Our cattle dog Odin had a high prey drive and had gotten out of our yard once before, but he stayed nearby. The 2nd time a few years later he did not return even with us searching for him and it was pretty devastating. We think it was a coyote that drove him and off and someone picked him up. I am really super happy that you guys found him :)

My sister and her husband bought remote acreage and put up a wooden shed. Someone/people broke into it and stole all their tools and supplies. They upgraded to a storage container and now feel more secure. They felt the same way that a container was ugly, but after having to account for insurance and list all the losses, and submitting reciepts, they think it is beautiful! We bought five acres in central Oregon in the 70s, former BLM land, and started with land. It was the best years of my life. We started with a 20'X20' cabin with a loft and lived in it before adding on for 7 years. We had an outhouse, an outdoor shower, and built on a 20'X20' porch on the front of the cabin to use as our woodshop. By the time we had our 3rd baby it was time to add on. Those were the happiest years of my life. And paying as we built made it really our home.

The "good" thing about Camp's adventure is that, I've fostered and owned many dozens of dogs and only 3 dogs out of dozens was unaffected by losing me temporarily. Once a dog "loses" you they tend to be more aware of keeping you in sight after that. I reinforce that behavior by watching them when they're off lead, and if they aren't paying attention I'll duck down behind a bush where I can see them but they don't see me, then I wait. I LOVE seeing them stop, look around, get concerned, and trying to find me, then I reward them tremendously with hugs, pets, and "good dog" love. Make the disappearing moments brief, (I know you guys would never traumatize him). Only 2 dogs have ever looked briefly for me, didn't care that I disappeared, and went about their business over the years. Those two dogs took a LOT of high value treats to make them care about whether I was in their sight or not! 🤣

My grandfather was a whisperer. The things he did with animals could have been a Discovery Documentary. I asked him once, "Pap-pa, how do you get a dog to do those things?" He said, "FIRST... you have to be smarter than the dog." Kamp wants to explore his new digs but he knows where home is. HUNGER is a wonderful motivator to return to where you get fed. Rattlesnakes shouldn't be a worry. Dogs know to avoid them. Coyotes, on the other hand, will pack attack a dog so they should be a larger concern but unless you are hearing a pack howl every evening then I doubt they're close.
Pap-pa took me on my very first hunting trip. We went squirrel hunting. He borrowed some guy's dog and we went over the night before our trip to feed him. I laughed. I said, "Pap-pa, that dog won't hunt." Pap-pa said, "That's what dogs do, son."
The next morning, we gathered the dog and took off to the woods.
Pap-pa opened the door to the turtle-hull and the dog hopped out.
Pap-pa said, "Sit." The dog sat.
Pap-pa looked at me and said, "If the squirrels are moving, and they are, he will have one treed before you get your shotgun out of the backseat. I laughed and laughed.
Pap-pa knelt down, placed his hand on the dog's head, and whispered, "Hurry Mother."
Off the dog went. I threw open the rear door and before I laid my hand on the shotgun the dog went to bawling.
Pap-pa hollered, "Grab your gun, the squirrels are moving."
We killed our limit, 16 squirrels (8 each) before noon, and returned to the car but the dog was nowhere to be seen.
I asked, "What about the dog?"
Pap-pa said, "He ain't done hunting. We'll pick him up later." Then he tossed his hat on the ground.
We went home and cleaned the squirrels. Mam-ma cooked a mean squirrel. She loved them.
At 5:00 that evening we drove back to the bottoms and there was the dog, resting his head on Pap-pa's hat.
Kamp is an Asset. Trust him. Use him.
$8.00 a bag Organic Top Soil from Walmart will do you better than a $30 bag of Happy Frog. j/s

I’m not a building official in your area. But generally if the house is on a trailer (wheels) even if it never moves it can be smaller then the minimum of 750sq feet. So if you put that shed on wheels you can get around the rules.

Don't know how old Scamp is.
I had Rat Terrier mix about 15 years old.
Start wondering off and finding her standing in a ditch in water shivering.
Used to let her out freely and return like clock work.
One night came home in thunder storm.
    She crawled under the porch.
Left her alone knowing it was dry and often lay there.
    Next morning couldn't find her.
Several days later found her dead beside the road.
Cut to the chase. She had dementia.

Suggestion: do not use MDF! Use plywood or backer insulation board behind cement board (Hardy board) for siding. Hardy board does not rot, it's not wood). With the snow loads you probably get there, you need it framed on 16" centers with a good pitch on the roof. You can build it much cheaper than buying it. There are shed plans available on line. Be sure to use plywood on the floor, NOT MDF. MDF cones apart after it gets wet a few times, it's interior glue. If you get or download a shed plan then it makes it easy to submit it for any codes/ permits. You should be able to build it on cement blocks, you shouldn't need a foundation for a shed. Building a shed is good self-training for building your house!

Kale can get large if given the space, sun, and sufficient water. Look up square foot garden spacing. The thing about overcrowding plants is that the main sign of overcrowding is that the plants stay small. Which is not a problem if you want them to stay small, say if you like baby greens and harvest often (like multiple times a week), but if you want really big plants, they need space from the get go. Otherwise they stay small and you think, "hey these plants are still small, I'll up-pot them when they start to get bigger." It's the same principles as bonsai.

    • @connie6545

Alex Reith Good points! My bible for gardening is Square Foot Gardening by Mel Bartholomew--great for conserving water, and growing food more efficiently. I found an old painted pot in our garage when we first moved into our new home. I planted peppermint in it. The runners from the peppermint actually split the pot into pieces--nature at its finest!

Thank you for the feedback! We know they’ll be totally too crowded in there soon, but we weren’t sure if they’d survive at all so we started with just a few containers! I appreciate your wisdom so much!

    • @alexreith4877
      @alexreith4877 3 роки тому

I think Mel has some great ideas, and that works for a lot of people. My experience with it was that it was really resource intensive since he forbids using native soil and peat is a non-renewable resource. Peat bog harvesting is kinda like strip mining in a way. A better planting mix is actually straight compost and sand, no perlite or vermiculite which he seems to think are interchangeable, but actually serve very different functions. Also I think that Mel downplays the importance of mulch as a way to retain soil moisture. From the looks of it, you're in a dry climate and mulch really protects the soil from drying out too quickly and can help keep the soil cooler. I also found that some of the square foot garden spacing was really too close for things like large tomatoes that really take over a bed even if you're diligent about pruning and staking.
I really like Charles Dowding's no dig methods, but again, it's important to remember that his climate is generally cool and damp relative to many parts of the US. Even here in New England it gets much hotter. So my best advice is to look for someone who is either regionally local to you or who lives in a really similar climate and see what they're doing.
Wood chips are like great sponges. Untreated wood chips break down into rich loamy soil within just a few years, though it might make sense to use something else that is more abundant in your area. Hay, straw, coffee hulls, basically anything that's biological materials, and isn't too far from neutral pH.

A little tip I learned a long time ago, DO NOT dump your bagged soil into a plastic container. Take the new bag of soil and simply lean it against something, a pile of rocks, fence, anything. Once you do that, cut the top off the bag, take a knife and poke a couple of holes in the bottom for drainage, then just simply plant your garden plants, (tomatoes, peppers, etc.), into the soil on the open end of the bag. If you want to plant bush type of green beans (Romano Bush) or vining plants such as cukes, simply lay the bag of soil down, cut a slice length wise and plant you seeds. I have been growing tomatoe plants in the same bags for 6 years now. About every 3 to 4 years, I have to buy a couple of bags of dirt to replenish the soil and I ad some compost to them as well. One of the best plants to grow in a hot and dry environment is "Okra". Okra is amazing and grows very easy in hot environments. Kale grows great this way also, but it grows better in cooler environments, so if you live in a dry arrid place, grow kale in the very early Spying and Late Summer. Where I live, I plant a "bumper" crop of the Romano green beans in late August and have fresh green beans for Thanksgiving. All grown in bags!!!! Growing in bags = no weeds!!!!
