That was phenomenal, Thank you!! This video is packed full of information. Our fur baby is a cat! We have encountered many places that forbid 🚫 cats all together. Really not sure why either. Excellent job on this video! Thank you for sharing this detailed process!!
Thanks for the helpful video! But I just want to double-check the docs you need to send though. It seems like you don't need to send the FAVN doc since that will be sent directly from the vet to Hawaii. If you have to wait for the FAVN doc, the timeline might be more tight, and I just wanted to confirm it :) Also the website says to include the microchip number with the money order or cashier's check. Do you mind if ask how you did that? Should I just put a sticky note with the microchip number written on the money order? I really appreciate you uploading the video. It really helps :D
I sent a copy of thr FAVN just to be safe - it was already there electronically but I was obsessed with having and providing copies of everything. 😆 The chip number goes on the import form that accompanied the cashiers check. I also put it in the memo of the cashiers check. Hope that helps!
When you have to hand your dog over to them for evaluation of paperwork, are you able to go with them/keep an eye on your dog? That’s my biggest worry .
I’m curious why you didn’t choose to fly nonstop to Kona, via American Airlines and drive the 2 hours to Hilo? They have options for direct flights and vets that meet you in Kona for the rabies verification process.
Im so lost. I had both my puppies vaccinations done at Vetco. I contacted them to see if they had rabies certificates for my dogs. and basically they told me they don't have licensed doctors to be able to do that... On top of that, they lost records of one pup & for the other pup, I was told she doesn't have the rabies vaccine. Which doesn't make sense because they both have their rabies tags.. I was looking forward to requesting for the NIIP but I think id be denied without two certificates. Would my dogs just have to be quarantined? I have no idea what to do now lol
I spoke with The Department of Agriculture in Hawaii today, and they said the first rabies doesn't need to be an original, only a copy, but the most recent needs to be an original in blue ink.
Good to know! We jumped through an extra hoop then. I think the little extra we paid our old vet to send us one was worth the peace of mind for us. I did not ever speak to someone in Hawaii about that specificly so they may be right. That was how our vet and myself interpreted the checklist.
What is the process of getting your pet a “ticket” to fly as cargo vs. baggage. Is that what you guys did the day of at the airport or do you pay for that before arriving at the airport? I’m a bit worried because I won’t be flying with my pet, but someone will be picking up my pet.
We booked it at the same time we booked our flights about 6 months in advance. Hawaiian airlines directed us to the right place to book her on the phone. We knew in advance she would was a cargo ticket. :) We went to the airport a few days before to confirm the crate was the correct size. :)
Great question. We rented a truck so we could put it in the bed of the truck BUT we did break it down to store in our hotel room and fit in our van when we arrived in Hilo.
Yes it is very stressful! But now that we've done it, I'm confident we could fly again to other places and she would handle it well. Not that we will, but I'm happy to say everything worked out well.

Print APHIS 7001 Form in lieu of paying for “Health Certificate”. Take it to the vet and have them fill it out. Boom, save 💵
Nice ! We are vacating there for a month when I retire in a few years and we have puppies this was so helpful mahalo!
Great info
Is it required to have our own labels to put on the kennel or do they do it at the airport?
Depends on the company. When we purchased the Kennel it had stickers to attach and we did but Hawaiian Air also added their own too.
Great video! So helpful!
