I live in Hilo and I can completely see how you could be frustrated with the way they do things there. There is a lot of negligence in that hospital. Thank you for your time here it’s much appreciated! Hilo is very high school in the regards of it being cliquey. Embarrassing 🤦♀️
Aloha from North Shore, O’ahu. RN here, not traveler but a fed, but I can see how it could be in the private sector re nurse and physician relationships. It’s a cultural thing. This might be the 50th state but it’s not America. The culture here is so drastically different than any other state in the US, and for the most part it is a very good thing. I don’t want it to be like the mainland and overall it makes for a wonderful place to live overall. Personally I would not work in private sector here, or anywhere lol!
After reading reviews on Hilo medical, I was very disturbed to read many. Most reviews were very bad. I hope these patients as well as family members will follow through with lawsuits. I have lived twice in Hawaii and very familiar with transferring patients to Oahu and Oahu patients as well transferred to mainland when necessary. Thank you for informing others on your video. Done very well! 😂
Sounds like Hilo, I’ve complained and told the Liason maybe if they were a little nicer they’d be able to keep doctors. This review confirms my complaint. I’m sorry you had to deal with that. Thank you for your honesty
That is so unfortunate. I don't really see them changing anything sadly. It wasn't an entirely bad place to work but some things were harder than anywhere else I've been in our travels for sure.
If you're from here, I wouldn't worry about it. This guy is the type of mainlander that thinks he's coming in to change the world and make Hawaii a better place. I've worked in mainland hospitals too and we haven't mastered anything with our scientific advancements. People are sicker than they have ever been....
Thanks for the review. I was at Hilo Medical Center for 2 weeks with sepsis in 2019. The nurses were the best people there. Most of the doctors were obviously just learning. My experience was horrible from beginning to end. I completely understand why you would not return. When a decent doctor comes to the island they never stay. I have been a Big Island resident 35 years and it doesn't seem to get any better.
I live in Hilo and am a senior white. I have been in the ER twice and in real physical distress. White people have to lay on beds in the hallways while locals get rooms, not on a first come first served basis and certainly not dependent on medical condition. If you felt the discrimination, it is real.
I would say just the opposite. I have used HMC many times and never experienced any kind of discrimination. And no, local people are not given precedence while "white people have to lay on beds in the hallway."
I once had a hospital completly exclude all travel nurses from nurses week things. Even the unit potluck I was told to bring something (which I did) then told I wasn't allowed to eat anything 😶
Yep. My youngest is 6 weeks and i was on Oahu for 2 months during end of pregnancy and post partum to deliver safely at Kapiolani. We were expecting difficulties post delivery for my neonate as I am in medication management which can affect baby. I had to maintain meds in order to keep pregnancy safe and healthy. All eas good but it is scary delivering a potential NICU bb and the amount of effort that has to go into getting to OAHU. Everything went perfectly and iam SO grateful but if i wasnt so on top of things, it wouldnt have gone the same. Thank you for coming to our island and giving us a little of your time. We are grateful! 🙏🏽
When I visited the big island in 2007, I met a physical therapist who worked there. She gave me a tour of the hospital and the Rehab department. I am sure she has retired by now.
As someone who spent five nights of horror in said facility, I can attest to the fact that they hire cro- magnon orderlies ( 7 in a group)who scream like banshees at around 3 am without supervision. Had I not been tethered to a drain tube, I would have walked out . During daylight hours the place is just like any other hospital, professional and competent.
From a patient’s perspective this hospital’s emergency room is rude to the patients often. Some staff don’t show much respect toward patients, especially if the patient has mental health issues or if they think the patient isn’t represented by family. I’ve filed a few complaints against some staff for threats, abuse, and outright rude behavior. I don’t normally complain but this hospital is turning me into an outright Karen. I’ve traveled as far as Waimea because the service at HMC can be so bad. If it was possible I’d never go to this hospital but unfortunately it is the nearest to where we live. With that said, it is a very busy place and some of the staff is really great. It’s luck of the draw on who you’ll get and how you’ll get treated. The guards are really nice though. Always a smile.
Nit picky in Hilo? 😂 It's everywhere you go and every job. I always felt it was the strong Japanese culture. They're the top dog and haoles are def lower. I only made it 5 years there. Kona side waaay different. 40 years later and I stay forgot ... till now. I can totally picture the "certified nurses day" incident.
Excellent overview, like the true professional that you are. I do not understand why any locals would view a "traveler" differently. Medical professionals take the same oath "shall do no harm"...locals should be thankful to have travelers present assisting. You have a lovely family and it is a shame that folks on the islands would treat mainlanders differently. I also find it interesting hearing how medical facilities are "different" throughout our country. Great job....where to next?
If you live here you can't possibly be surprised. Its really got nothing to do with the medical profession. it is just another type of "TRIBALISM" . I'm better than you are. BS. as old as many kind. people just have fantasies about tropical Islands and exotic places. Living and Touristing are 2 totally different realities - but alas, that is true for anywhere.
As a nurse from the mainland who worked on Oahu in acute care, home health and hospice, it was challenging in many ways but I don’t regret my time there.
As a contracted worker working at HMC, our group see the same kind of 'us vs them' in group/out group mentality. Conversely, as a local who's worked with a lot of travel nurses, I've seen some 'fair weather' behavior from travelers too, like they're doing bare minimum on the job because they're really just here for a paid vacation. I think your 'certified nurse's day' experience was likely just HMC trying to showboat their beloved 'we hire local, we're part of the community' attitude, by taking a picture of just local nurses for publication on social media & maybe on their obnoxious posters. It's funny HMC is touted as a 'learning hospital' when they constantly hire travel nurses over training local nurses, in my experience.
Sounds like Hilo maybe a little bitter towards travel nurses; with a thinking that you are 'taking' people's jobs. Either way very unprofessional and tacky of them.
it is and will forever be known as "Hilo Hospital". no matter how many billionaires fly through trying to make everyone love them as they buy up as much land as possible on the island. old crusty white dude aside, pretty accurate review of our hospital. Having had multiple close friends who've worked there.. im glad they found better places to work lol.
That is not in itself a slur. People here use the term to refer to a caucasian person. It has no negative implications but can certainly be used negatively depending on intention of the person using the word.

@NoOrdinaryPath No, when you were speaking. I understand that when people talk about Oahu, they tend to put the W sound in. Sorry, didn't mean to be picky.
Yup! This is why I'm not an ICU nurse in Hawaii anymore! The small-town attitude, the insecurities, the lack of professionalism, the frank racism got to be too much. I laughed when I heard "Epic is coming soon" because it shows how behind they are. Anyone wanting to be a travel nurse in Hawaii has to understand the "You ain't from around here" attitude, and ignorance is alive and well. Thank you so much for bringing your experience to the Big Island. I'm sure the patients there got good care and appreciated what you brought to that ICU.
think he was being very kind........ wait for the Attitude you may get when you bring up a discrepancy. sorry to make it sound like there are not mostly good Intentioned workers, etc.... but the downsides are WAY OUT OF KILTER. The " Its' all GOOD " attitude is not acceptable. If you want all the fancy "bells and whistles" you desire; then you need to form a better work Ethic.
I’m in Kailua Kona right now in a Surg Tech contract. The staff I’m working with are amazing! So kind and welcoming. I’m included I. Anything I want to be included in. The docs…well, let’s just say they are OVER travelers. I almost cancelled my contract two weeks in. I was able to work through it with the directors of the facility and it all worked out but it’s pretty tense with some of these docs. The lack of supplies and trained staff is difficult but the people I have worked with have really made the effort worth it. I go home in 31 days. But who’s counting. Lol
That is terrible about the certified nurses day. As a former manager I always included my wonderful travelers. 😢

Agreed
Im from Puna and will drive to Kona for medical attention.

thank you for your service .... my husband just died there .....
So sorry for your loss. 😢
Oh my! I'm looking up Rat Lung disease 😮
This was interesting. Thank you for posting. Sorry that you do not want to come back. Our loss.
I appreciate your candor. Hopefully, the powers-that-be at that hospital will take this feedback seriously and make necessary changes.
hopefully!
You handled this review very well. I understand it was probably a very difficult one for you too give.
I appreciate your kind approach to the challenges you faced! Another adventure in the books! 🖖🏻😘👍🏻🙏🏻
Thank you

I’ll pass this to one of the directors in the buildings I know a him. Maybe they can have a chat

I did a month of PT internship in 1973 at Castle Memorial on Oahu and I was called a Haole by staff and patients alike.

So outdated, hopefully some of that money goes to updating software and better staffing
There is no W in Oahu, please.
Did I spell it that way somewhere?
@NoOrdinaryPath No, when you were speaking. I understand that when people talk about Oahu, they tend to put the W sound in. Sorry, didn't mean to be picky.
Anyone has review of Hospital in the North East?
Thank you for sharing!😮

Some people really enjoy it. I think it really depends on what part of Hawaii you stay and work in.

Bad points aside, do you think this would be a good place for a med school grad to do a family medicine residency?
I'm not sure I'm a great person to ask. I think you can make the best of anything but I personally don't think I would want to do that.
yes, much needed
