Fun to watch. Back from 1973 to 1980 I was out every big day at the Wedge and even the little days. I would ditch college classes, was fired from a job because I called in sick and they found out I was out. I broke my nose twice, dislocated my shoulder 3 times and finally tore my rotator in my left shoulder and could not paddle any more. I was known for my Superman style with both hands in front working like a foil. You see some vintage films from the time I am probably in them. I miss those days but then I miss being young and foolish. I still get out but 6-7 feet is max and I use a bodyboard now. Now I am the old fart making the kids on boards pissed because I make them look bad. Hand loose and see you at the beach.
@artist you might know. When was that Balboa Jetty completed that makes the Wedge wave. Why I ask, is did you know that John Wayne (Marion Davies) a school mate of my Dad ruined his shoulder body surfing Balboa, and could not be admitted into the service in WWII, so he went north and started working on sets in Hollywood. I am just wondering maybe he is one of the most famous casualties of the Wedge.
These waves give the name the Wedge to this beach. Wow, incredible. In the 60s I body surfed the wedge, and no one ever used a surfboard in those days; it was assumed you would just die if you did. Now I'm so old and decrepit, it's a challenge for me to conquer the big surf in my bathtub.
Same here, Toby. Flying out there tomorrow afternoon from Utah. Probably sit on the sand with the wife and tell her of by gone days.....splatting on 6 inches of water and calling it fun!!!
I used to body surf it back then as well. We would head down for the storm waves on red flag day. One day they would label epic today, me and a buddy were surfing with the names from surfer magazine who was there doing a special edition. We were in there with them, just not famous. After I caught a big one, one of the camera guys from the magazine came over to compliment me asking who I was. Ha, I told him nobody famous, The shot he got appeared in the mag, labeled unidentified surfer! Too funny! I’m 80 now but still go down to watch. Your body wears out but you never lose your eye for it. I can tell if they are in the right place to catch one and can still look out and see a swell that will be good! Bummer to get old.
I was born in LA in 1952 and lived in the area until 1992. I body surfed all the beaches from San Diego to Santa Barbara. I lived primarily in the So Bay and my go to beaches there were Hermosa, Manhatten and Redondo. I went to CSCLB and CSULB and loved hanging out at Seal Beach.
Body-surfing is my favorite thing to do on this planet. I'm almost 6 feet tall and weigh about 170 pounds. These waves would snap my body in half. I don't see how these guys survive!
I am watching this again! I am 67, and still active with the churches ( swimfins). That inshore break- the sometime undertoe suck-out on the high take off! Not even the perfect practiced/WWE wrestling roll/ fall can save you on some of these! Would I try it?! F YEAH, but real REAL carefully! 6:33
I used to body surf without fins in the 50s, 60s and 70s. I finally got a pair starting in the 80s and it made a world of difference. Never had a wetsuit so I didn't have that extra bouncy. After decades of competitive sports, outdoor 'fun' and a landscaping business my joints and body in general gave up. I'm only 71 but had to quit trying to play in the water at 68. I really miss it. I had never seen body surfing videos in big waves and now I'm thinking "my god, no wonder I'm in such bad shape now". In all those years I only had one time I really looked death in the face. Scared the hell out of me and I called it quits for the day. But I was back out there the next day. 🤗
Very good, my dream and many a friend here in Brazil, Bruno Rodrigro (the teacher) met this amazing beach and amazing people, videos posted and congratulations for the disposition of you ... God Bless ... André, Brazil Surf ... bodysurfing in action!!
I think everyone on that beach Has To 'try it' at least once to truly appreciate what these Real B-surfers go through i.e. being dropped from 3 meters up into 2ft. of water and then with The wave pounding you into the sand is an experience!
Grew up in South Bay and had decent surf in Manhattan Beach, etc. But we all had The Wedge in our heads for ultimate body surfing. Those jetty rocks are death.
Thank you Andre and glad you liked the video. I had the pleasure of meeting Bruno earlier this summer when he was here at the wedge! Great guy and awesome bodysurfer!! I keep up with the Brazilian bodysurfing scene through Bruno on the Wedge Crew site on Fb. Ride safe my friend (=:
Some of the best times I've ever had was body surfing at Atlantic city in the 70's. some of them waves pounded me so hard I almost passed out holding my breath while getting pummeled by brute Mother Nature force!!
Please could somebody film from the begging to the end- I mean the entering into the water , the swimming to the wave and of course the catching of the wave ( bodysurfing) and after how the swimmers get out of the danger? It’s interesting me and maybe others! Thanks
There is a shortage of video resources on swimming skills for the surf zone. One reason is perhaps that people swimming among, and into, waves are hard to catch. People on boards, easier. People on wave faces, even better.
fall of 77....me and one other guy chased all the bobbers out and gave a clinic..I remember getting to a crowd of 500 giving me an ovation..I kept looking back at the waves but all had quit ....my girl kathy met me getting out of the water and I asked her what isall the screaming for...never forget her response..."you dumb ass"
the balls to take off at the max height of these waves , knowing that you are going to get pounded no matter what, is beyond belief. how are they able to survive even one ride ?
The Army Corp of Engineers destroyed the Wedge. Instead of pulling up the huge boulders and putting them back in place they put small boulders and granite shards on the jetty. It has never been the same. Now it's a huge clamshell into the sand. I had the good days there. Then I moved to Ventura Country and had Zuma all to myself on waves over 8 feet. I rode 17 ft perfect lefts and rights and I was the only guy out. The lifeguards would sit in front of me, and old gray haired man and watch in amazement. Yours truly, Frontslider.
The larger waves were obviously too powerful for a true complete bodysurfing ride. The human body in relation to that much size and power can only accomplish so much. You'd have to have tow-in bodysurfing or something like that. The power of the waves in the larger waves here sucked the guys to the peak from which they simply dropped. That's a failed take off. Some of them recovered from the drop, and being able to recover in waves like that is definitely impressive, but a really impressive ride would have been being able to hang that face and ride the shoulder into the tube. Only the rides on the smaller waves were accomplishing that, but even then, the tubes on the smaller waves were not that clean or accessible and their bodies were being sucked too far back against the tube. Here's a large wave very successfully ridden by knowing how to choose a wave and positioning correctly to avoid the peak and find a rideable shoulder into a negotiable tube: ua-cam.com/video/VUNOLeJjLVE/v-deo.html
It's not the size of the wave that is the problem, it's the SHAPE of the wave which is determined by the ocean bottom. I've successfully bodysurfed waves this size in Hawaii, in a hurricane swell at Makapuu on Oahu- this ride is so short, it's not even worth doing in my opinion
What is really dangerous at the wedge isn’t the size of the waves. It’s what you don’t see. They break so close to the beach the water is only 2 or three feet in front of them. Fall out of the wave and break your neck or back
There are certain times of the day where the bodysurfers have the waves all to themselves. Sunrise to 10am during the summer months. No boards allowed during those times.
@@HBSTONELIGHT I posted on that vid today that I thought one of the waves was in my opinion the largest ever ridden @ the Wedge. I now feel that looking back at that epic, historic swell from Marie that ride 4:26-4:36 is the biggest ever ridden. The frame grab @ 4:32 would make an epic poster!!
I love this stuff never surfed the wedge but coming from Australia we’ve got some banana spots to body and surf so when you get the chance come to Maroubra it’s where one sorts the men from the boys 🖕🏻🖕🏻🖕🏻👀🙈
you guys are both wrong. Wedge can get over 20ft. it can even get up to 30 from trough to peak. Secondly 3ft swell? are you f**king blind? Arduous, junk wave... If you have never surfed it don't knock it. I have gotten some of my favorite barrels at this spot.
Remember the swell in 2000-2001. It was 30 foot.foot. Alot of video was taken and a couple of girls got swept out, knocked out and thrashed! Respect The Wedge if you know of it or not...
I don’t understand all the people standing on the beach and not playing in the water. What are they even doing? Why stand around aimlessly when you could jump in!!!
Is that actually surfing or the equivalent of runing along a road in pitch-dark hoping not to run into something. I can appreciate surfing but this looks kinda absurd and we'll pathetic
It’s beach break. It’s a lousy place to body surf unless you enjoy getting pounded into the sand. There are much better places to body surf not far away. Huntington Beach, for example.
The Wedge still has one of my Churhill’s!
Used to bodysurf here after light days water polo practice. FVHS, 83-86 and bodysurfed here in Speedos well into the 90s.

In the wedge, there's very little time to align Some of the longest runs are in great silent swells at Longnook beach on Cape Cod.
The ride is so short & violent, but thats the wedge, & thats why people wear helmets there.

you guys are both wrong.
Respect The Wedge if you know of it or not...
lots of broken necks here through the years, best know what you're doing at this place

I surfboard & bodysurf Wedge early 70's - wild plus no crowd - stupid, easy location as U washup on beach
Hijo del mar>( UA-cam channel)
Slow mo isn’t raw footage nor cutting the video….
Where are all the badass equal rights chicks?
It’s beach break. It’s a lousy place to body surf unless you enjoy getting pounded into the sand. There are much better places to body surf not far away. Huntington Beach, for example.
