wow im happy i landed on professional chef yt, thank you for teaching me how to cut onion like chef
So nice of you! thank you!! have a great week!! :)
I adore onions!! perfect work chef 👍🏻👍🏻🥰💕
Thank you so much 👍
This is going to help me a lot man!! you should be giving lessons for people to learn! you are such a good teacher!!
thank you very much buddy!! :)
Maybe some quick tip for cutting onions is to put them in the fridge before cutting and using sharp knives (obviously) to reduce the tears. Or at least I notice a difference between cutting warm onions and colder ones from the fridge.
To think about it I have never tried that, its not something very important as it part of the job, but home is a different thing!
those knife movements are too fancy for me😀I CAN'T!
haha little by little, it takes time! ;)
Ha ha I started the video and paused it to get my knife and practiced slicing techniques! I am going to need this skill when I do my French Onion Soup. Going to slice LOTS of onions ha ha. This is really helpful, Chef James! In the meantime, I am going to apply what I learned here in my everyday cooking at home! Thank you so much!
im very happy to hear that! later on i will make some more videos and try to maybe do a live one as then people can ask questions! :) yeah, onion soup does that a lot of onions! haha have a great week my friend! :)

This video reminds me of Julia Child, she had to practice cutting so many onions when she started culinary school, basic cutting skills 101. This video is so helpful and informative. I'm too lazy sharpening my knives before using but this will help too.
I haven't heard Julia Child's name in a long time! yes im sure she did! im glad that this will help! keep your knives sharp is important! haha
You are a really good teacher James
Thank you very much Jerri! :)
Thank you very much for the masterclass buddy, hope it will serve me once I cut the onions, take care and have a great week as well

Definitely helpful James! I'm still not good in my knife skills and good to see the various ways to slice shallots and onions. I'll keep that in mind and don't judge me in the next few vlogs 😝
haha don't worry! im glad that this can help! :)

You are so welcome!!
@@ChefJamesMakinson :)
WOW, I wish I had seen this video sooner. I learned the culinary school method from another video but I had my onion the wrong way around the whole time & was using the back part of the knife (I'm a simple home cook not a chef), this lesson is really helpful. I've watched famous chefs like MPW and GR doing this but honestly Chef James explains it better in a way that is easy to understand for home cooks - the steam engine motion I can relate to and try and use my knife with that movement 😃
I'm glad I try!
Thank you for sharing 💕
You are so welcome!
Thanks
What skills James! Impressive😍😍

Really loved your presentation

God bless you to success 🌷🌷🌷🌷👏❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you so much!! it means a lot! have a great week! :)
For brunoise and fine mince, I find it's easier and safer to make the horizontal cut(s) first. When slicing for onion rings, make 4 - 5 scores in the top layer instead of just one and peel off each section from tip to root. You can see James struggling when he makes just one cut. No need for a paring knife. The base of a chef's knife does the trick. James, you are the best culinary teacher I've come across online.
Lyk55 for great tutorial James 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
