Sir the two points you are showing on a sphere one at 'p' and one along z axis, must be equal to radius of sphere know. I mean z=rcos(theta)=r and op=r .
17.00. Measuring the angle at the vertex of tge rod is not practical. Instead we can consider the angle the rod makes at the xy plane which we can measure and serves a practical purpose
For 3D spherical coordinate system, we have to find the projection (shadow) of the radius on the horizontal xy-plane where angle theta is at the "vertex of the rod". That is the reason why at 17:00 I have drawn the diagram accordingly. Thank you.
