Weight For It (with Evan Edinger and Luke Cutforth)

- Welcome to the Game Garage! A series of three new, experimental quizzes and games. Thanks today to Evan Edinger - / naveregnide - and Luke Cutforth - / lukecutforth - for being the guinea pigs for Game 1: Weight For It. Sure, we could have spent a fortune on a massive studio, huge props and a giant seesaw: or we could get a garage, some GoPros, and some boxes of sand.

This has been a long time in the works - thanks to all the behind-the-camera team! And for anyone who's wondering, we are actively looking into filming more Lateral later this year...
this is great!
hehe boii
hol up
Should've been £5, would've made it much more interesting
lovin this just a little p.s. your pronounciation of dyrehavsbakken sounded better and way more correct when u just tried when u used your notes it didn't sound anything like it at all.
"Always go with the big US airlines" Thanks, I'll remember that next time I'm in a sand-based quiz scenario.
And to be clear, this is the only time you should go with the big US airlines.
I mean, considering it came up in another Tom Scot quiz show.
@@jamesrockybullin5250 this
A textbook SBQ!
The relative scoring system is GENIUS!!! (But you could tape some lead weights inside some of the wrong answers just to have a moment of false excitement, then dread, when barely any sand comes out :D )
Nah. Sand. Lots of it. Inside a sealed ziplock bag. Then it feels completely legit.
Even better is if you weighted them to make all the weights equal so you never knew until the pour, even better if instead of sand it was the pence you're playing for
You are evil! I love it.
@@Jaymic But then you wouldn't get to see their reaction on the initial lift/handoff
Calm down, Satan
My one criticism of this is that it would be nice to see the answers all ranked, so when you're playing along at home you can see how well you would have done, even if none of the contestants made the same choices as you. Otherwise, great concept, great execution.
On the same vein, it would be great to say explicitly the 3 or 4 answers that would have helped to win the last questiion with the heaviest anvil.
You could probably search for the answers on Google and rank them in the comments section right now.
@@theLazyElf That may not always be practical, as there could possibly be several combinations that could win, depending on the values of each possible choice.
Would love to see, at the end of the question, all the answers and their rankings on the screen
I wanted to know how well 1408 did because it was great and everyone should see it at least one.
Audience: *complains about Lateral Thinking being unbalanced*
Tom: *Literally makes a game about balancing buckets*
Wrong social media, no laughing react.
@@route2070 😂
Actually, I loved lateral, it was a very exciting game idea :)
@@fizyk1101 I liked the concept too. Still horribly unbalanced, but fun regardless.

woah i instinctively blinked twice
been a long time since i laughed like that at a youtube comment
@@Hay-md2he Oh no where are you?!
pronouncing Dyrehavsbakken correctly in the same breath as claiming you can't. And then butchering it with the aid of a pronounciation guide :P
I thought the same thing
One change I would make: Brace the balance until after they've dumped in their answers, then release it to see how it tips. It would add a little suspense.
I'd also hang the buckets from hooks at the end of the arm so that the sand won't try to fall towards the winning side.
Another improvement to reduce friction would be to use washers for spacers. Also bearings in the center section
And here I was thinking clear buckets so the audience can see what's going on!
Would also stop you having to test to see whether it's equal / having friction problems after each question
Yes

Has your sentence anything to do with the korean TV show/game ?
@@Aezandris I would not be surprised if we saw some Main Match or Death Match material in this series at some point... so yes. It does.
This video reminds me of a simpler time when UA-cam videos were made of borrowed friend time, unemployment money and good will, with a great idea making all the difference. And I think you, my friend, have a great idea. (not as great as citation needed, but those are few and far between)
I mean, so many of the bigger channels are going "we wish we had a bigger budget so we could make bigger videos that get more views", yet nearly every single time, the best UA-cam videos are the ones that have a brilliant idea and are made on a shoe-string budget. Especially with Rotor Riot this happens a lot. To find their best videos, simply pick the ones that anyone who's already in the hobby can do at near-zero cost.
Weird that it works that way, given that it doesn't work that way with mainstream shows - with Sci-Fi movies especially, they need at minimum a reasonable budget to be watchable (but then the story/idea is most important). Maybe it's that specific genre - with romcoms the budget probably doesn't make that much of a difference.
Dane here. That pronunciation guide for Dyrehavsbakken was completely off. Your initial attempt at the pronunciation was good enough to be understandable, if you were asking for directions and such. The one after reading the guide however doesn't sound anything like danish IMO.
At least you got a pronunciation guide. Did you hear how they said "sepak takraw"? I cried a bit inside
Ja ikk? "Jehagsbargen"? Bruh
@@CatherineKatswell Same XD
I'm Filipino, and that was bad. The "Sepak" bit, fine. "Takraw" tho, yikes. They had to say the 'raw' part as the English word with the same spelling, but different pronunciation.
the pronunciation of Dyrehavsbakken went from acceptable to incomprehensible with that pronunciation guide other than that great show
Tom was actually quite close with his initial attempt. No need to apologise for that.
@@hoej I second that, nearly perfect for a non-dane.
Well, not even Danes understand their language so...
@@andyrays Totally agree
As someone from southern Sweden we have always just called it Bakken (or Backen like it is spelled in Swedish (properly)). Is the same in Denmark?
Calvinball is real and is played with at least two players, but possibly all of humanity minus Susie.
I was gonna say, people do play Calvinball for real, and it's got at least two, sometimes three and potentially infinite players.
But the question asked about players on one team, and I'd argue that for calvinball, that's always one.
I’ve played Calvinball for real at a con once:
@@metadaat5791 Well potentially 7.7 billion players if we count only humans and sentient tigers, practically probably half that if we count those humans that are realistically able to play and sentient tigers.
@@vengefulenigma Are they all on the same team?
Oh Tom, don't worry about Lateral too much, this format is amazing!
I don't feel like "Weight For It" is the real Next Big Thing, but the Game Garage could be it, I liked it! Please throw more things against the wall, we'll see what sticks!
Good pun, good point. I like it
@@hammer_ttk also, literally throwing things against a wall and seeing what sticks sounds like a decent enough idea for a game show!
@@springplus300 "Welcome back to Will it Stick, today with special guest Colin Furze and his jet powered catapult throwing the things our contestants pick against this wall"
In the final round, instead of the medium anvil, why not weigh against 2000 pennies. That's 7kg in coin.
because then you don't want to win?
greay idea, having to compete against the weight of your prize in pennies, but still give prizes in notes, no one deverves to get thousands of pennies.
I was thinking that as well.
@@Soken50 I mean, you could just bring them to your bank and throw it into the counting machine...
@@entropyzero5588 I've never heard of counting machines for coins, only for bills in narco movies.
Is that a park bench I see leaning against the back wall? Coincidence?!
The park bench shall rise again!
Oh wait, maybe that's the box for the one they blew up.
I'm honestly surprised by how much I loved this. Please do more!
Really fun game, I love it! I just have a couple of suggestions:
1) instead of a seesaw type of balance, use a pulley type of balance that goes up and down vertically rather than in an arc. The seesaw balance isn't very accurate, and both how the sand is poured as well as the movement of the seesaw itself could change the outcome.
2) I wouldn't take off the labels on the screen once they're picked. It'd be better if you made them less opaque or something, but it'd be good to still be able to read it.
3) at the end, put the numbers below the labels or something, that'd just make it easier to follow how they all relate to each other.
I do love it when Danish things are pronounced on this channel. It's hilarious and always just sufficiently bad enough to not be completely awful and instead just walks that knife edge of hilarious and ugh.
Love the new show, hope to see more good stuff.
I love this more experimental stuff.
Oh, pence as in pennies! I thought they playing for thousands of pens
I thought it was thousands of pants
I support this version
Ah welcome my fellow Americans to Britain
Pence = amount of money
Pennies = actual physical coins
Evan doesn't even fit in the garage which I find really funny

I was really confused when I saw Evan and Luke in a Tom Scott video, but I'm so happy that it happened!
Ah love it when Tom makes a new vid
regardless of content ?
Ooh, I liked this one, kind of like Pointless. Would be nice if you read out the best answer out at the end of each question though.
I was thinking this :)
I would even say, rank them all (ideally show on screen), so that the viewers can play along and know how well they are doing.
In front of me I got an article from Wi-- Wait, wrong show.
I was waiting for him to say it as well but then I remembered.

Then who is your favourite Gary Brannan?
@@bitodd Probably Gary Brannan. But we can't be sure.
One thing I'd have liked to see at the end is whether or not he'd have beaten the heavy anvil.
The "if only you had..." part of game shows is classic for a reason.
I’m so happy you’re doing new quiz show formats. I love all of your longer form content, very excited for this series!
Five thousand... pence. 😂 I loved it!
I love the whole scaled-down nature of the show.
Hey, Calvinball is real. People actually do play it.
And it can have any number of players.
@@saint23thomas It technically has 1 player per team, because it's a free-for-all style sport.
@@ctrlaltshift I think that qualifies it as a wrong answer however.
@@Quintinohthree Oh it definitely counts as a bad answer, but it's still a sport.
Game garage definetly can be a continuous thing on this channel, I'd love to see it back. (This quiz was also nice)
Calvinball was a nice reference.
This is literally the best quiz show I've ever seen. I'd actually watch an entire season of this.
Dutchy screaming korfbal at the screen ^^
When they brainstormed the name: It should be something about throwing... Which way do we throw the ball? Yes that's it, throwing up, the sound of throwing up, I know, cough hurrk KORF bal!!
Why did Luke get two cups of sand? They both won one round, and both won their respective round equally decisively.
I guess Round 2 is worth double.
This is brilliant. I would watch every episode of this ever.
I will say that the low budget production is incredibly charming and if this continues I hope you don't fancy it up too much.
I love experiments like these. Tom's commitment to trying new stuff and ability to come up with interesting formats is really inspiring.
Blackpool pleasure beach being considered a waterpark is hilarious
Neo Getz BEACH
Hanging the buckets will make for more accurate comparison.
I laughed at Evan's pronounciation of Sepak Takraw. I've thought of how would a foreigner said that, but i never thought that way!
I love the concept of this series--it's like a game show where the format changes every time. I'm looking forward to seeing the other experiments!
The only channel where I have notifications on❤️
Really love all your videos Tom.Your videos are very creative and informative as well as well-explained. Infact you're the inspiration behind my videos. Keep up the great work. We all love you !!!!
I would have expected an elaborate botch-job with 2 Arduinos, some stepper drivers and an automated sand dispenser... But this is fine too for a proof of concept.
This is awesome! Love the concept and can't wait to see more episodes!
Do more of this. I liked the host energy and the smart guests who logically picked their answers.
6:40 *Did you just dab?*
"Thats not full" was Evan's best moment but I loved the confidence when it came to the planes.
15:50 The font *weights* are also light, medium and heavy. Nice.
Weight for It, budget reverse Pointless with Tom Scott :p
More Tom Scott game shows yay!
Yes!!! I always love Tom-hosted game shows and I’m very excited to see a whole series now!!!
Experimentation is great, I've been loving these!
This was fun; I gave it a thumbs-up. But I still hope to see Citation Needed 2.0.
You better make alot of these episodes
Absolutely love the format, hope to see more soon
Love this format, Tom! Well done
This looks lovely
Another great show ! One suggestion would be to put a list on the screen in form of a graph diagram to make the results more visual and easy to remember :)
This would make such a good prize game, where the final is a prize they have to outweigh, instead of being played for cash.
This is a wonderful format! I love the ingenuity of this game show. Relative answer weighting (literally) is a neat concept.
Kinda disappointed that Matt wasn't involved.
I'm too impatient to weight
This format is great. I love it. That final round was amazing.
I like this a lot. This is the kind of content I'd watch all day every day. Great show, well done!
I was holding out on calvinball since there are theoretically infinite players
If this is going to replace Citation Needed, I'm not even gonna be mad
I am. Sorry.
I love these game show bits you have been doing!
I actually really enjoyed this format, it builds it's own tension very well, and has so many chances to scream at the screen if you think you know better, or if you think they are about to make a mistake - top notch
Good stuff, but where the hell did you get that pronounciation of Dyrehavsbakken?! It's more like "Deer House Bargain" with an English accent.
Deer house bargain, that is hilarious!
I've been meaning to buy a new deer house, you know any good places?
I don't know if this is open for ideas, but I feel it could add a bit of tension if the seesaw was fixed until the end and it would only show the winner after all the sand was poured in. (Would also make sure that it isn't just stuck, although the professional production would probably have it oiled up properly)
But that would be like a game where answering questions correctly scored points, but the scores were read out only at the end. Knowing the relative score at each stage builds tension.
It seems like holding it level for each turn and then letting it drop once the sand is poured would solve part of it, too.
I like it! It was surprisingly whatsit, edge of your seat-y. It's a good format, wouldn't mind to see more of these.
Ok, this is a genius idea for a show (both Game Garage and Weight For It), and I can't wait to see more. The idea of weighing down different buckets and having the money won depend on how heavy the counterweight is is also genius. Also, I feel that, as, in Calvinball, you make up the rules as you go along, it should've been entirely full, as that's what the rule that they would've wanted is...
Great video and I can't wait to see more! (Also I'm pumped for more Lateral, that's going to be great)
All my collab dreams are coming true .let's wait for the fanfic dreams
How good is FedEx? That's what I would have gone with, followed probably by Delta.
Well, according to all our favourite reliable source of knowledge, Wikipedia, FedEx is the biggest air-freight corporation in the world, and has 674 airplanes (although the number in my language was almost a year old, but that won't change all that much).
Delta has 885 airplanes, according to the same source of knowledge.
Absolutely loved this maybe an extra round as well wouldn't be missed either way loved it and loved the questions and the answers!
I'm loving this format!
Would've liked to see the full ranking best to worst on the screen after the questions
6:40 The "did you just dab?" has to become a meme 😂
"Absolutely not!"
This really was a surprisingly good format! I like the tension it builds when they start pouring :D
Love that you've got Elliot from Turbopunch editing, love him.
My only problem with this studio is the pile of cables in the corner
I think all studios have a pile of cables in the corner, they're just usually hidden.
You should have them pour at the same time
This was super fun to watch! Thanks Tom
Awwww I love this format! And the contestants were very game and good ones to start with! I love how insightful Evan was particularly in that last one. Good one, Tom!
