Photography like this not only illustrates the extraordinary dynamics and fearsome beauty of our life-giving star, it proves the necessity of keeping track of the sun's activity. An extremely strong X-class flare can knock out earth's communication systems.
Our solar observation builds upon the ancient importance humans attached to understanding the sun. Prehistoric and early historic people created primitive observatories to track the sun's movement to discern the beginning and ending of the seasons. They needed to know the optimal time to plant and harvest. It is easy to understand why sun worship figured in many early societies. We no longer worship Sol but it's importance to our lives has not diminished in the least. Thank you NASA Goddard for sharing your work with us. It makes me like paying taxes to support it.

anonymous one---In Winston,Oregon, At 11:a.m., Nov.5,2014, the sun was very bright; appeared to be very close to earth, with a large foggy circle background around it, and a rainbow encircled around the fog,. Too bright to get a picture with ordinary camera.
