    This is a wonderful illustration. I don't see in this video where the water source comes in since there would have to be a new water line to attach to my house pipes somehow.
    I have a big house that I want to move out of and build a tiny home/ garage to live in and rent my home so that I'll have more needed income. So I'm trying to evaluate the costs, etc.
    Thank you for this presentation.
    Also I need all this plumbing on the first floor and a small area on 2nd floor for just a bed...so maybe 5 extra feet higher than a single one story garage.

    do you have to cut the double plate where the 3 inches of pipe goes (see 9:55)? would you need to use a metal strap to connect the plates?

    • @gregvancom
      @gregvancom  Рік тому +1

      Yes, cut or drill holes for pipe and metal straps are usually needed to prevent any nails of screws from going into pipes.

    Can you make a video about below grade plumbing?
    I kinda want to build a 5ish foot below grade addition onto my house and have no clue how the plumbing would work.
    Thank you for your videos!!!
    Here is a thumbs up!

    Never put plumbing in the exterior wall in cold climates

    Is it still practice to use air chambers, those short lengths of capped off pipe at each fixture to control water hammer? I always see them on older and even some recent installations, but not seeing them at all anymore on new installs. Is there another way to control water hammer?

    • @BlahBlahManYeah
      @BlahBlahManYeah 3 роки тому

      Those air chambers were known to fill up with water with time and loosing its function, so no longer are needed. PVC and PEX don’t have hammering effect as copper does. Washers ate only place where mechanical so-called hummer arresters valves are used, those have spring loaded valves to reduce hammering effect. Copper is too expensive to use in new builds. Now with copper wire prices rocketing up who knows what will be a substitute in next 3-5 years span.

    • @gregvancom
      @gregvancom  3 роки тому

      I've seen them also, but most of the jobs I worked on in California, didn't have them. I had a problem with water hammering and it turned out to be the water heater.

    Great video! I saved it to my collection. I have a question tho: do you have the plumbing pipe going through the concrete stem wall? It seems you have the plumbing pipes going through the mud plate then the stem wall? Might this compromise the structural integrity of the foundation? Another comment I have is to have plumbing going through the concrete slab on grade without a crawl space, the work needs to be highly coordinated between the plumber and the concrete contractor, as demonstrated in this video. Maybe there is advantage to crawlspace b/c the coordination is less critical in that case.

    • @gregvancom
      @gregvancom  2 роки тому

      Yes, large pipes can create structural engineering issues like you suggested, but they do it anyway. Crawlspaces do have their advantages with plumbing, especially if it needs to be moved.

      @@gregvancom For two-story building the stem wall is about 8-inch. If the sewer pipe is 3-inch, about half of the stem wall will be penetrated.. Maybe it's better to transfer the sewer pipe toward the inside so it penetrates the slab instead of the stem wall? This means I can't hide the last section of the pipe inside the wall but if it's a garage it might not be that big an issue.

    This is almost exactly the layout I'm working out for my two story detached garage -- except the garage is already built and I need to retrofit the plumbing. I'm also just planning on a small sink on the first floor and laundry/bathroom/kitchenette upstairs. Since it's already built, and the bottom floor has concrete walls up to ~4 ft, I'm trying to figure out how to bring in the water and sewer into the garage while minimizing concrete drilling -- any ideas? I'll be re-doing drywall and am fine with the little ceiling thing, so routing within shouldn't be as much of an issue.

    Does the laundry stand pipe have to be a certain height?(what are the dimensions for the stand pipe)

    • @gregvancom
      @gregvancom  3 роки тому

      All pipes will be 2 inches or larger and you should contact your local build department for building codes in your area.

    if the washing machine has a dryer as well, they need to be raised up on an 18" platform in a garage. At least in Los Angeles. This is because people store flammables in garages. So the plumbing for the mashing machine may need to be higher.

      @gregvancom  2 роки тому

    Best that the vent pipes are straight shot. When you have a clogged drain pipe, plumber can run a snake 🐍, to unclog the drain pipe.

    Never put fresh water lines (hot/cold) against the out side walls, to prevent busted pipes from freezing. Most building codes require this. Example, turn the bathroom tub/shower 🛀 that the hot/cold, lines/valves are inside the warm heated interior.
