- The Eve Energy Outlet is the first Matter smart outlet on the market. It's also the first smart outlet to use the Thread protocol to connect to your smart home. In today's video we'll discuss the installation, setup, and the pros and cons of the new Eve Energy Outlet as I configure it to work with Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, Smart Things, and Homey.

I love my Eve Energy Outlet! I am SO HAPPY that is has thread. I will be adding more throughout my house due to thread and it allowing me to better connect all of my thread devices. Eve is game changing and for the people complaining about it not monitoring each individual slot, it really isn’t that big of a deal. You still can see how much energy is being pulled and can adjust accordingly. I think Eve is doing great things!
great review. wish It had USB-C plugs included
Shane, great video. I did order a few eve, energy outlets for my kitchen but after watching your video, I believe it would be a great addition to my parents home especially that they have a lot of plug-in devices that do not move. And the fact that they want to get into the Smart home this would be a product that they both will enjoy.
Thanks for the honest review.
Great video as always, Shane. I like that you’re testing things in other smart home ecosystems!
Thanks Jeff!
Never been afraid of commitment, and the thread protocol makes it useful in every location even if I’m not using for smart features at the moment. And I think the goal would be to make every outlet in your home smart so moving something isn’t a concern.
Great video, as always, Shane. Another use case in my mind is making power strip smart. You would want to intelligently consider the types of items plugged in to minimize any headaches with having non-aligned products turned on or off with a bunch of aligned items. For instance, I have 4 of the Eve Energy Strips in my house. In the Family room, I have two: one controls the Apple hubs in the room (2 HomePod Gen 2s and a 4K ATV) and another controls the power for the TV, XBox, and the audio receiver. Rather than nearly $200 for WiFi only control with the Eve Energy Strips, I could add power strips with more than 3 sockets connected to the Eve Energy Outlet here and get both Thread and more things controlled.
I’m going to pick up at least one of these this week as my contractor is coming out shortly to add some new sockets. I already have a shelf of Eve SmartPlugs for the portable needs, but the two I am considering are dedicated purpose sockets.
The outlet we have been waiting for!! Now just need a 20 amp version...
and GFCI and maybe some with USB ports too
Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!
Another great review Shane.
I’m debating on grabbing some of these…but I’m having trouble justifying the cost. It’s not that I think they’re too expensive, it’s just that I already have Smart Plugs in (literally) every location I need them…so, moving over to this Eve Outlet would be for no other reason than appearance.
Will see. I’m sure I’ll end-up with a few around the house before too long. 😊
Again. Great review. Thanks, as always, for the quality content.
Thanks for the kind words!
Had issues pairing with Apple. Once I turned off the non thread Apple HomePods first gen and the Apple TVs was able to pair with the Apple HomePod mini. Pairing to Homey Pro also worked well.
I have the eve energy smart switch and I have it hooked up to home assistant via matter. In home assistant like the eve app I get power monitoring. I guess the power monitoring is something matter has added recently which home assistant has implemented.
Thanks for the video, Shane!
Do you know what happens in a power outage? Does the socket maintain the previous state (on/off) after power comes back on?
Would you be able to test that by turning off mains for a room that has this installed? 🙏🙏
Thank you!!
I didn’t realize you had a long term Homey Pro setup. I know you’re a HomeKit guy, but I’d love a deep dive into the Homey Pro as a quick side quest. Most people didn’t go any deeper than the one video at the embargo drop.
Curious about it as a Home Assistant user that knows there are limits to it where you might need both.
I hope they make a uk version
Hey Shane, your video points out a lot of different things that are going to be important to smart home people. Based on the list of pros and cons that you pointed out, I think it’s mostly pros for me. The cons that you pointed out, though important to know, don’t affect my every day life that much, and it allows me to gain other “portable” outlets that were being used in the dumb outlets. Really great point about getting two for one. Thanks again for another great video!
Thanks for watching! I’m glad it was helpful! 😊
I’ve gone down this road before with Insteon, never again. Now I have several expensive wall outlets that are useless or now they are just a regular outlet. I’ll stick with the energy plug that I can move around my house if I need to.
Great plug! Need more products like this for Apple Home. Question, do the lights always have to stay on when it’s powered on or can you control that in the app?
Whatever is plugged in to the outlet needs to remain on. Then you can control the device by turning on or off the outlet in the app.
It’s worth noting that like the switch, it takes up a LOT of space in there. A very tight fit in a single size box.
That's pretty much any smart outlet or switches. I have installed so many of them that I have mastered the art of cable management in an electrical box.
Great job Shane, I'd love to install a few of these but at $50 each I think I'll wait till the pricing comes down a bit.
Order in bulk from Eve directly. I got a discount buying 5 of them
Great Pros and Cons listed and a very thorough review. My only complaint is the wide variety of sound recording (levels and quality) from your different mics. It was a little disconcerting as well as it seemed to be louder during some parts and softer in others, due to the different microphones you were using. Other than that very small complaint, this was another great video; and as always, I look forward to more content from your channel.
I will get that under control. I actually used the same mic, just moved around in different locations...trying something a bit different. Thanks for the feedback!
What about Australia 🇦🇺???…Any idea when we’re going to get this available??? This is exactly what I’ve been looking for to do my whole place.
Seriously need a thread wall socket for the UK market.
All we have is WIFI sockets which is becoming a total pain if I have to reset my router.
Are the two plug-ins tamper resistant? I can’t find any documentation that says they are TR. I’m pretty sure that’s a requirement in the U.S. when replacing receptacles in an existing home or when building a new home.
Will there be a UK version?
This is going to sound like a dumb question but I’m a newbie to all things smart so here goes…
Can different automations be set up in all the different ecosystems with the new Eve outlet.
Great information as always…thank you.
Not a dumb question at all. Yes, you can setup automations in all the different ecosystems.
I didn't hear you mention if this was a tamper resistant receptacle?
Hi,
I have purchased eve energy form usa apple store.
Would yoy please quide me on how to make an automation in iphone to turn off the eve plug when the iphone battery level reaches 80%.
Thanks
Uk version incoming?
home assistant support?
I currently use the Eve energy with HomeKit & Home Assistant. In HA the power monitoring is exposed & you could use it for automations. I currently have my washer & dryer plugged in when the energy usage drops below 3 W for three minutes I get notification on my HomePods & iPhone that my laundry is done. The now outlet could be a cleaner install for me. My only issue like with the Eve switches is that they only come in white.
Thanks for sharing. Seems like a big benefit of using home assistant is the power monitoring automation capabilities.
You have both those appliances on a 15 amp outlet with what’s most likely a circuit/breaker/wiring for 20amps?
Why do I kinda like the idea of receptacles having physical on/off buttons? Even if not connected to anything “smart”. Plug in an appliance, push the button to turn on the power. Control any receptacle in the house with the smart home automation.
I can see these becoming fairly popular overseas (where energy is much more expensive) and smart plugs are commonly used to shut off appliances when nobody is home.
Second thought, my son pulls those plug in outlets out all the time and its annoying lol(hes 3). Thirdly you might invest in using lever nuts instead of wire nuts, much easier.
Maybe combine it with wireless switch/button i.e one from Aqara or something similar, setup scene/automation so you don't have to use the button on the outlet itself? Additional cost ofcourse but if I where to purchase one of this that's probably what I would do. Reaching down (if the outlet is low to the ground) is not ergonomic to be using that built-in button.
Have you considered using it on your appliances? Those ones are always plugged in and never move. I need full visibility energy usage on my major appliances. I want to toss one on my dishwasher, Washing Machine, microwave, my server rack etc.
I have mine added to my wall mount ipad because the last ipad exploded on my wall when the battery swelled. Donno if it was because it was plugged in constantly but this time i set an automation to turn on at 6% battery and off at 99% battery.
love love your content but the background music you choose while you’re talking is very distracting. Just a bit constructive criticism. Other than that. All good and thank you. Will buy this Eve outlet because of this video.
Thanks for watching and for the feedback! 😊
With using HomeKit and Siri, you shouldn’t have to use the LED buttons to turn the switch on or off. Assuming you can name top and bottom different names.
Wonder if you can help, I have tp link matter smart plug and it works when I turn it on manually, but not by voice it tells me it not in my apple home 😢
I have found that Eve products have a weird connection. They seem to be offline way to much
The opposite has been true for me. Mine have been solid. Assuming you are talking about their thread products, I would wonder what your thread network/border router situation looks like.
Been wishing for this for years, finally its here and then theres no EU version *LL*
Not yet, it has allready been showed itll come dont worry
That's great news mate, thank you.@@tackleviewchannel3620
Appreciate the review. I'm curious why you don't include Hubitat/HA in your reviews?
Thanks for watching! I can only include so many ecosystems in a video (or in my home), and these days there are more and more to choose from.
My channel focuses on Apple Home, so that is always primary. Then sometimes when discussing Matter, I’ll test a bunch of others like in this video. I chose to use all the most common ones: Samsung SmartThings, Google Home, and Alexa. I also currently have Homey Pro set up so I also used that. I currently do not have HA or Hubitat set up for testing.
Cause he doesn’t use them maybe?!? Combining 20 different eco systems in a smart home isn’t so “smart”.
I was wondering if there was a way to setup a notification if the outlet became unavailable. I have Koi pond and it would be great to be able to know if the upstream gfci breaker trips. I have lots koi because of this in the past
That is a difficult one. I don't think there is a way to get notifications via Eve or Home App for when the outlet looses power. It might be possible in Home Assistant, but I"m not certain.
Need an EU version for this
Eve is a european company so my guess is they came out with a EU version before the NA version.
I have been waiting for these to be released. Once they were, I ordered 5 of them. I just installed my first one a couple of hours ago. Geez, it was stupid simple. It took longer to migrate all the automations from the Eve Plug it was replacing than it did to actually install it.
Unlike you, I don't care about the permanency of them. I already installed 31 Switches/Dimmers/Fan Switches around the house. We've been here 18 years and there is no desire to move.
My wife is the one who actually said to buy 5 of these because she is not a fan of the plugs sticking out of the all. She likes / wants the clean look. I know where two more will go, but not sure about the last two. She suggested to install them behind large furniture (China cabinets, etc) and lay extension cord under the furniture so they can be utilized if/when needed. Not sure I want to move anything anytime soon to install these.
Wife approval! That’s a bonus! 😃 Glad to hear yours was so easy to setup.
Per eve tech support the smart plug will not work with any pushbutton appliance switches. Does the outlet have the same limitations?
All smart outlets or plugs can only control devices/appliances with an analogue controller or switch. For example, the outlet would NOT be able to turn on a device that has a touch power button. So this outlet would have the same limitations as a smart plug.
A simple test you can do is to unplug your appliance (while turned on), then plug it back in. If it comes back on to the previous state after plugging it back in, then a smart outlet or plug would work.
I have an off topic question. I have an new Eve Aqua (for setting up watering via Home App). I am setting it up at my back yard, but was wondering, can a device like this also be set up at a vacation home? I have a second Apple 4k there, and wondered if one Eve device can be set up on two different apple Home devices
I don't think it's possible. I believe you can only setup a device in one Apple Home at a time. I would probably just create a new Apple Home in the Home app for the vacation home. You can have multiple HomeKit homes and easily switch between them in the Home app.
I was figuring so, @@ShaneCreates
I guess in a few weeks, when I open it for the season, I will know for sure
THANKS

Home Assistant will also show Eve power consumption, be it from the Eve smart plug or the Eve smart outlet.
Thanks for sharing!
OK your video mentions this Eve device works with Homey via Matter. I have not been able to find any specific videos about Homey working with older non Matter Eve products. Nor have I been able to find any integration apps on Homey for Eve devices. Have you put out any other videos on these two working together?
Older Eve products do not work with anything other than HomeKit. The only Eve products that can work with Homey are those that support Matter over Thread.
Thx for your response. Pity, it’s holding me back from jumping in with the Homey brigade. Presume what you are saying is that’s older non Matter Eve devices going directly into Homey does not work. How about going into an Apple Hub and then via the HomeKit integration app on Homey?
You can bring Homey accessories over to HomeKit through that integration, but not the other way around.
Shane, i think a solution for your wife's outlet is to install the eve energy outlet, then just stick a flic button on the wall right next to it that will turn off the outlets. What do you think about that? It seems like it would still look like a cleaner setup instead of using the wemo.
Thanks for the suggestion. I also considered this, but I sort of think we’re just creating problems for the solution at that point. I try to keep things fairly simple in my smart home and sometimes less is more.
I'd like to try one of these, but the Eve light switches (I have 4) *barely* squeezed into the existing box behind the switch. I'm worried these outlets will be the same. My house was built in the early 90's and the existing switch and outlet boxes were sized for the normal switches and outlets in use at the time. Most smart switches require a larger space for installation.
I did not have any trouble fitting mine into the wall boxes, whereas it is always a challenge with smart switches.
Cool. Thanks, Shane. I ordered one for my garage where I now use two of their plugs in one outlet. That'll free up those two plugs for other uses.
Install was a piece-o'-cake. A bit tight in the box, but like you said, not as bad as the smart switches.
So, if your outlets don’t have a neutral wire, it won’t work, correct…? Suggestions…?
Ray in San Diego 😎🌴⛱😎
All receptacles in your home should have neutral connections at their outlet boxes.
Their decision to only do combined energy metering and not per-outlet is a show stopper for me. Too bad Eve went cheap. Need dual energy readings.
Don’t consider this a cheap outlet!
@@dankelley9361 Exactly why the combined energy monitoring is a huge failure for a lot of us. I wanted to separately monitor my washer/dryer but now can't.
Agreed
@@vDereksjust get a smart washer and dryer. Problem solved
@@emilsecker7881 LOL nope. Eve needs to build usable products.
I tried to put the Leviton smart outlet in my bathroom but ran into an issue with it not being a GFI outlet. Anyway around this?
No, these cannot replace GFI outlets.
Unfortunately there’s no GFCI smart receptacles available yet. I went searching everywhere, they simply don’t exist yet. I honestly can’t see these ever becoming available as all the necessary hardware needed for a GFCI, plus all the “smarts”, is a lot to package inside of a single receptacle.
Why not put the matter contrer into the devices themselves, that way it doesn't matter (excuse the pun) what socket it is pluged into as it goes whenever the device goes. Just put the matter controlled switch in the device insead of at the plug end of the cable or the socket.
If you can’t work it from a switch and Apple Home Kit I don’t want it.
At the price point for this thing, the fact that it doesn't have even a single USB socket is a non-starter.
looks like exactly what I was looking & hoping for but then they ruined it with those ugly LEDs
Why do these companies always make smartphone stuff so different? Why can't these companies just make normal fixtures that look the exact same as every other normal fixture but just have smart functionality?
Combined energy monitoring - like really?
Yeah, u expect them to squeeze all the hardware needed to monitor two separate receptacles in a tiny box? Maybe in the future when all the tech needed becomes smaller, but don’t expect that functionality anytime soon.
Eve products are great! Except their Aqua which sucks ass
I’m finding my eve accessories to be the least reliable
I am constructing a home a retirement home I am convinced with smart switches not fully convinced with smart bulbs but sure dimmable led or led strips can some one point to a forum or guide where I can discuss with experts … and seek guidance I want to do it myself of course with help of certified electrician- I am building this home in India ..
I’ve been electrician for 30 years please do not tape wire nuts.
