I was excited to try the Nanoleaf Essential Matter/Thread A19's but could never get them work properly. They would lose connection, or I could get them to setup at all. I would reset them and try again, usually with no luck. I even moved my Thread router as close as I could and still spotty connections or no connection to the bulbs. Eventually I gave up and returned them. Being this was my first experience with Matter and Thread, it was kind of a bummer, especially when you all were praising these technologies. I have since purchased a few ither Matter and Thread devices and they are working like a dream. So, I guess it is the Nanoleaf products that need some work.
I had problems with my Essentials A19 bulbs as well. In my case, it was frequent drops in thread connection. The bulbs would just go unresponsive and I’d have to reset power to them. I ended up going back to Hue bulbs. My Eve thread devices seem to be pretty reliable, but not the Wemo or Nanoleaf thread devices.
If you buy energy plugs, buy always where you can measure the consumption every moment , eve does it every 10 minutes . I can log it and export to a spreadsheet or database.
Hi Eric. One of my more esoteric Matter devices I’m using in my Apple Home is the YeeLight Cubes. The fantastic lighting options are great and I love the dot matrix clock. It also works really well with lighting for your music. However, getting the power bases to stay connected to the SmartHome is a frequent issue. I’m hoping that with some updates, that aspect will stabilize.
He is just a blabla speaker. I m using eve energy plugs since 2 years for control my sleeping energyconsumers. Well that is a great help. I ve reduced our consumption from 35 kw to. 19-21 kw a day. Yes you read good. I ve measured alarm , routers, camera by Poe, power of cv power of airheatingblower, my amplifier, the A3 colour printer, the Mac minis the freezers, outside lamp consuming, the pump of the garden pools for the fishes etc…. Yes measuring is the knowledge. 😅
Hey, Eric, great review! How did Govee Light setup go for you? I've seen a bunch of reviewers mentioning how the setup process was quite bad with the Matter lightstrip.
Great question. For me it was easy. I didn’t have any issues with set up pairing to Apple Home (converted to the new Apple home architecture with IPv6 enabled on my home network)
I have a few WiZ Matter over WiFi bulbs and the Aqara Matter over Thread door sensor P2 working with a Nest Hub 2 almost flawlessly and integrated into automations with the new Google Home script editor.
I have the older Nanoleaf Essentials E27 bulbs and they’re fine but, they’re difficult and frustrating to update. I’ve never updated them and had all 3 update without issue. For that reason alone, I’d be very slow to buy any more
They've definitely worked out the kinks on the tp-link kasa outlets, i have 2 and they're amazing, I'm using one to monitor the energy consumption of my washing machine, they're definitely a must buy now
Hey Eric, Thanks for the updates on Matter. I been using the TP Link KP125M branded under the Kasa name smart plug without issue. I think the unit in the video was TP Link P125M branded under the Tapo name.
Hi Eric. Thank you so much for all of your effort that you put in to these products for us! A little off topic here. I believe you touched on a white Noise Machine in one of your videos in the past. I can’t seem to find it😅. I’m in the market for one. Any recommendations please, or do you happen to remember which video it was. Thanks again!
Nanoleaf was the best, but the brand completely imploded with the addition of Matter. I can’t even use my smart bulbs I’ve given up and just use the light switch. Avoid Nanoleaf matter products, but the older Homekit versions are the best on the market snatch those up if you get a chance.
its been a year since you talked about the reliability issues with the TP 125M Have you seen any improvements? I just got a bunch of these in july during prime days, and just now started setting them up as i was going to use them for our christmas lights. Just wondering. Thanks!!
A matter question: eve smart plugs without matter are now on sale, wort getting those instead of the new matter ones - using only apple homekit. In advance thanks for the reply 😊
Yes I would say get them if you don’t plan on using Matter features. They are great plugs and can be updated to support Matter later in software if needed
Hey Eric, The Govee M1 matter compatible version, allegedly does not support Matter locally, meaning if the internet connection of your home is slow or absent, it is slow to respond (or doesn't respond at all) when controlled via Matter from the Apple Home app. This seems to me like a major violation of the local first mindset of how Apple Home works. Did you check out this behaviour? What do you think about this? Also how responsive is it compared to Nanoleaf Essentials (via Thread)?
I haven’t tested this. If it is the case that it’s partially or fully cloud controlled it wouldn’t be the first device in HomeKit to do this. Apple added the option shortly after HomeKit was released long ago and Belkin Wemo’s original smart plugs were I think the first accessories to use cloud control/authentication in HomeKit. You are right that HomeKit is still almost entirely local to your network.
Hi ! Matter is local first, you should not have issues controlling it without internet, but maybe your local Wi-Fi network is weak ? Do you have a mesh Wi-Fi network ? Do the lightstrip get a well Wi-Fi connection ? Do the lightstrip work while unplug your internet input cable to your router (while letting your router(s) on) ?
I’ve had nothing but issues with the Eve Energy and Eve Motion Matter devices. Matter lights have also given me many issues. I’m waiting on matter devices now.
my most frustrating experience is that Nanoleaf A19 is great and also, NOT. Everything BUT getting the color to set per scene is good. I want a white scene for when I am on camera, and deep blue for the rest of the time. It never saves that color as part of a scene!!!
I have 6 Nanoleaf essentials a19 bulbs. 1 is great and 5 don’t have a thread connection. Of the five with issues, 2 work at least and 3 I have to use as dumb bulbs. I have reset to factory them at least 20 times and keep the firmware up to date. So if you have more time than money, get them otherwise it’s hit or miss. My previous bulbs Hue just worked. I shouldn’t have sold them.
Same as many people in the comments, I am super frustrated by the Nanoleaf Matter bulbs. Part of it has to deal with the current limitations of Matter, that does not support adaptive lighting and scenes, that are the coolest features to expect from smart bulbs (similarly I could notice in your video, that light strips have a uniform color) Other part has to deal with the lack of stability of the Apple Home / Matter / Nanoleaf trio that leads to several instabilities and lack of responsiveness. As conclusions, WAF is very low at the moment, and my only relief is that Nanoleaf lighting hardware is very good so one hope software updates will slowly solve the thing.
I feel like Matter is still an authentication mess and its gonna take another year or two before things are sorted out. I'm just gonna use YoLink's LoRa devices with the cloud backend in Home Assistant because I simply need the coverage/distance. And when Matter (w/ thread mesh) does finally catch up? Then maybe I'll consider switching over for local control...
My Matter Essentials A19 bulbs go unresponsive frequently as does my Matter Essentials Light Strip. What a PITA. On the other hand, my Eve Matter motion sensor has been extremely reliable.
I just got the Matter Nanoleaf Thread bulbs and they’re not good. Super unstable in Alexa, even show up unreachable in the Nanoleaf app at times…no adaptive lighting in HomeKit…from now on I’m sticking with Zigbee, Thread is overhyped imo
I bought a pack of 3 and had to storage them until a new update comes out, they're are extremely unreliable, I individually and collectively tried with Alexa, Google, home assistant and smart things. They're just unusable
Thread is fantastic, it's matter that sucks. Nanoleaf thread A19s & light strip are incredibly reliable for me. Got the Nanoleaf matter light strip a month ago and still can't get it to add to Apple HomeKit, shows as unresponsive.
That is the name of the Ubiquiti controller that Eric is using for his Network. They have several controllers with "Dream Machine" in their name (Dream Machine Pro, Dream Machine SE, Dream Machine Wall, et cetera).
On another note, extending from my previous message. Your segment of this video to do with the Govee M 1 light strip. You are able to contact Govee. Send them a copy of your receipt of the M1 light strip. If it doesn’t have the matter, technology built into it. Once they’re available, they will send you the power supply and switch to allow it to work with matter products. Two days ago from this post. I reached out to them and sent them a copy of my receipt for my 16 foot M1. They replied back, saying that once they become available. They would send one to me. I will let you know once I receive it. Also on the same subject. I’m not sure if you are familiar with Govee products. I recently purchased their permanent outdoor lights. But like my previous statement about smart home products not being what they claim to be. Govee‘s app is yet to be desired. Not just my words, but the whole entire Internet community shares my frustration. It would be really awesome if you had a step-by-step tutorial on their app and it’s many functions. Please and thank you lol
Hey Eric I wish I had seen your review of the Matter Eve Motion Detector before I purchased one. I have several Eve products (including motion sensors designed for HomeKit) that are successfully working on Apple HomeKit. I just purchased a new Eve Matter motion detector. Trying to install the device the installation does not “see” the custom name for my home and it tries to default to Apple Home. Eve tech support has not been able to help. Any chance you might have some idea as to why? Thanks. Keith Ps. Keep up the great work with your channel. It’s a great resource! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

I have had little problem with the new nanoleaf strip. Where it plugs into power connector. Kept falling out. Would Duct tape? Or electrical tape work
Duct tape could probably work but you might try talking to Nanoleaf support. I haven’t seen this issue and maybe you have a defective power connector.
