    Saw this band live in 1980. They were great. Part of that Southern Rock swell started by the Allmans. Lead man Rickey Medlocke was actually the first drummer for Skynyrd, and has toured with them for many recent years. The man's a rock legend and needs to be in the R&R HOF.

      Rickey actually started on drums for LS and went back to Blackfoot to sing, play guitar and write. He recorded some demos with Skynyrd in Muscle Shoals.

      Blackfoot was apart at the time and Bob Burns was gone from Skynyrd at the time Rickey could play the drums besides the guitar so he filled in on some early recordings and so did Greg T Walker from Blackfoot filled in on bass

    I met these guys at a hotel I worked at in Winston-Salem, NC back in the late 80’s. One of the guys heard two girls asking me at the front desk if Blackfoot was staying there. Not two minutes later Ricky Medlock (sp?) and one other came down to the lobby and visited with the two young ladies for about 20 minutes. That has stuck with me ever since. Nicest bunch of folks you’d ever want to meet. Love your reactions! Keep up the good work.

    Lynard Skynard and Blackfoot grew up together . Not only is Ricky the current guitarist for Lynard , he and Greg Walker or on the song Simple Man by Lynard . Rick is actually playing the drums , Greg on Bass . Also , little known fact about Rick , the Guitarist/Singer of Blackfoot . He lost a lung to cancer at 10 years old , so think about singing with just one lung .

    • @keithsexton1263
      @keithsexton1263 6 місяців тому

      Him and Greg are not on Simple Man they were both on a few early recordings but not that and I always thought he was born with 1 lung and learn how to spell Lynyrd Skynyrd it's not Lynard Skynard, maybe that's why your statements aren't right

  • @zachwalentiny
    @zachwalentiny Рік тому +7

    Blackfoot's history literally starts with Lynyrd Skynyrd. Rickey Medlocke, the lead singer, guitar player and creator of Blackfoot grew up and went to school with the Skynyrd boys and was one their original drummers. He was even on some of Skynyrd's earliest recordings which can be heard on their complete Muscle Shoal's album.

    I was lucky to see Blackfoot live in ‘80 , Jackson TN. This is their best song, hands down. Naturally dynamic, with the shimmering guitar intro, the stomping guitar riff, searing guitar solo, and Rickey Medlock’s ballsy voice, this is pure southern rock gold! Thanks for sharing!! In the current era of over processed, over produced, and digitally corrected music, it’s refreshing to reach back and pull out honest guitar driven songs like this.

    That's funny man. You know, the huge hits off the album were Train Train, including that really amazing harp intro. And then of course Highway song, which I remember your reaction to.
    But that whole album, Blackfoot Strikes was amazing. And this is one of my favorite songs off it. And another one and that direction along this line is called Wishing Well. It totally kicks and the sentiment has some really great things to express.
    But Rickey Medlocke and Lynyrd Skynyrd were closely meshed. There is some fantastic material from Rickey medlocke singing lead with Lynyrd Skynyrd. On the one hand you've got White Dove, which is one of the most beautiful and haunting songs I've ever heard. It's largely seen as a war protest song once all the men dying in Vietnam just kept going on and on. But really it could be applied to anything. Any feeling of just extreme sadness and out of connection with what you would think would be reality, and yearning for something simple and pure. It's incredible.
    But also, his lead vocals on Preacher's Daughter is so fun. And the whole song arrangement is fire. And by the way, Ricky is also an incredible hard rock drummer.
    .

    Rickey Medlocke is just simply awesome. Great singer and fantastic guitar player. He's now Lynytd Skynyrd's guitar player. He reformed Blackfoot with all new members appearing on one song and Co- writing some of the others. No they're not as good as the original Blackfoot but in my opinion they rock.
    The drummer was the late Jackson Spires. Without any doubt the most underrated drummer in rock.

    This isn't about this kind of music, and you don't usually react to America's Got Talent, but on Female Friday you need to watch Putri (put-tree) Ariana sing and play piano and get a Golden Buzzer from Simon. She's a 17 year old blind girl from Indonesia, and this video is only seven days old, with 31 million views. Simon is so impressed, he has her sing another song after a beautiful song that she wrote herself. She's so adorable, upbeat, and talented she'll make you cry. I've watched a dozen people react to this, and I cried every time, just like they all did.

      @@ssRocker-nn3tp a really heavy record. Its almost as if Marauder should have come after Strikes and then Tomcattin. In 1980 heavy rock was really getting heavier and Tomcattin bangs like alot of the non southern rock bands of the day.

      @@ssRocker-nn3tp its got some good rockers on it. I didnt feel like they strayed too much from it. The keyboards were a sign of that. But the songs really are good songs. The presentation did get skewed some. But its all i got having been too young to catch them in concert before then. And they put on great shows and recapped all the great songs. For me Vertical Smiles was a fall off.

Ricky was not 5 ft from us as we sat on the edge of the stage right in front of the mains.(small venue, bar in Chatt,) I was a huge fan and our band played their songs so I was singing just as loud as I could looking right at Ricky and he grinned cuz I think he heard me. Good times.

    Lynyrd Skynyrd, Blackfoot, .38 Special, & Molly Hatchet all came out of Jacksonville, Florida and all would eventually go on to ink big album deals and taste rock stardom in the 1970's & 1980's. Another legendary southern rock band, The Outlaws, is also a Florida band. From Tampa if memory serves.

Great music today too, but we lived through the most AMAZING changes in music. I LOVE your channel and am simply BINGE WATCHING on youtube and not doing my WORK...haha. I have some suggestions - one female for your Fridays - Anastacia (I'm Outta Love) and for something completely different - Rick Wakeman - Journey to the Centre of the Earth. (this might be too long for your comments as it's a 40 minute orchestral rock piece - but to experience it is amazing!) - also please check out Angelina Jordan's more recent performance as a 13 year old on AGT singing Bohemian Rhapsody. INCREDIBLE!

    Rickey Medlocke BRINGS IT, once more! There's a reason I was calling for this one.
    Of course, I've been calling for "Diary of a Working Man" even louder, y'all might recall. So…next?
    (Although "Fly Away" doesn't suck, either, and there's a nice live video for that.)
    And if you want even HARDER stuff, there's always Bloodrock, who were out of Dallas. "D.O.A." actually nearly got banned from the radio, which would have been a shame.
    Your classic Blackfoot line-up:
    Rickey Medlocke- rhythm guitar, vocals, songwriting
    Charlie Hargrett-lead guitar
    Greg T. Walker (there's a different Greg Walker who sang for Santana)-bass, backing vocals, keyboards
    Jakson Spires-drums, backing vocals
    (I didn't know that Ken Hensley, the main force in Uriah Heep, had joined in the 1980s for two albums, when Heep were broken up. Tbh, I think Ken might have been out of gas; he wrote most of Heep's work, but only one song for Blackfoot ["Send Me an Angel"] and it's nice enough, but IMO rather generic. No reason he couldn't have sold it to Krokus or whomever.
    And then Blackfoot broke up, too. Huh.)
