@@Dominic712 It basically lets the fan run longer so that it mimics the run of a boat on the water. It will mean that you can rate a bit higher and still have a controlled recovery

When I was 17 I touched 1:10 at the start of a 100m school competition, and definitely I was excited about it. Unfortunately I made a false start and at the second try I was slower. I've never seen that split anymore🤣
For shorter distances yes shorter legs are usually better as you cannot have as high stroke rate at full length. Also consider the path of the handle, it’s not really short overall. Just not using as much legs. Especially considering Phil is 6ft 10
I can’t remember specifically if his best was the previous world record. He did hold it previously but not sure if his previous was it! Was 1:10 point something
we are taught a seat and a way of rowing. However, if you look closely at all the records, take the time to watch them, they are executed almost behind the scenes. Moral of the story, row any way you want to perform !!!!!
does concept 2 do drug testing for world records? no accusations of course im just wondering if someone could get on gear and have an unfair advantage, this goes for the longer distances too
Sub-1:05 will probably never happen, that requires 24% more watts than Phil's piece here. That would be equivalent to dropping the 2k record from 5:35 to 5:14.
Not easy l know but if he was able to keep the chain straight on the recovery then he would be able to generate EVEN MORE power. Pulling on a wavy chain means some time and power is lost pulling out the wavy bits. Amazing row nonetheless and maximum respect fella.
I am a scrub and I think this is trolling. If you really are going for world record there would be 2nd camera behind you so that you can show monitor of concept 2. Again scrub here but I don't think he was breathing correctly or even had great strokes. This is what you see when people think that they are going fast but in reality they aren't. And last scrub thought...you would insta loosen the straps or you would get cramp and if you are spent...with no way to get up and having a cramp in leg...it would be alot of screaming in agony. Am I at this level ? No. (is that guy at this level...I also don't think so) Do I think this is fake ? Yes. Have a 2nd camera at monitor...or if you got 1 camera...have it either to your left or your right behind you so that it records concept 2's monitor.
😂😂😂 this has to be trolling. If it’s not, I think best to focus on improving your understanding of rowing and how the concept2 machine works. On top of that think about how just because this video has one angle, doesn’t mean there isn’t another. This video isn’t supposed to sit as proof of a world record 😂
@@CameronBuchan The video is titled "world record" The whole point of it and the rowing that he did was the "world record". And if I went through all that trouble of actually setting a world record...I would record it properly. And there would be no doubt. And you gotta go on their word that they are rowing as fast as they say they are. And be it a best row video...or how to row video. Unless you show monitor I don't trust. Period. period after period. And yeah like I said I'm a scrub..I don't know everything about concept 2. I'm learning. Show me monitor or I don't trust. Simple.
@ As I said, this isn’t supposed to be proof. It’s the video to show what the world record looks like. You don’t have to trust it. I’d trust the proof that the guy that actually did the record has, like the unique code generated by the machine and the video of the screen he has. Again, learn more about the concept 2 before firing accusations around. For sharing screens, a couple of points, 1. Some teams don’t like sharing their scores 2. Most people aren’t videographers so don’t think what might look best 3. Some people just don’t have extra cameras 4. It’s not worth it to appease one person Maybe contact Phil and discuss with him how you think his records are fake
@@CameronBuchan Excuses. And you are not appeasing one person. If you are going for "world record"...you are going versus world in a sesne. So if there would be a list of top 10, top 100, top 1000, etc...there would need to be proof. And on a rowing machine side view isn't enough. It's not hard putting camera behind you. It's not. Not behind you behind you...but behind so that it records monitor.

I have gone faster just not on video so it didn’t count I guess. Like I said I didn’t even know they had records for this stuff. I just saw a video of Brian Shaw messing around on one and he had like a 1:30 500m time. The navy seal had like a 2:00 time. I was in Romania at the time and said I’m gonna beat that. I did. Didn’t think about it again till I saw the leader boards in Bulgaria. Got first place in that event (2k row) and 3rd place in the 1k jacobs ladder. That one sucked way worse. Shoulda had oxygen after the ladder. I just did an 8:00 2k row today on a concept 2. I’m really out of shape. It looks like the indoor season starts in January. I’ve got 6 months to get at least 2 minutes off of todays time. We’ll see.
@@scrapmanindustries yeah a life fitness machine unfortunately is a lot faster than a concept2 machine. The indoor season starts any time you like! Good luck on your journey. Let us know how you get on.
@@CameronBuchan what is the difference between the 2 machines as far as timing and calculations go?
Curious about the heart BPM after he finished.
Probably quite high but won’t be max since such a short effort
What resistance was it set at?
You can see in the video it is set to around 8 on the machine, roughly 180 drag factor
Would be interested to see him try row in a boat. Absolute monster splits from a monster man.
Wouldn’t be any issues since he used to be pretty good rower many moons ago!
First time trying I got 1:34 minutes. I’m 265 lbs and I do powerlifting. Was some good cardio. Might start doing it every time I go to the gym after my deadlifts
I wouldn’t do a flat out effort every time but sure a cool down or warm up on the machine would be good!
well and truly yammed on it 🍠
So much yam
Absolutely phenomenal.
I feel quite the same after 500m in 2 minutes on the rowing machine 😂😂
Don’t we all 🫠
me, too!!! And I was PROUD AS HECK! it wasn't 2 min straight, but ther was a 2 involved.
Started rowing recently. Does anyone know of any virtual rooms I can join ? I got an Aviron
Assuming he finished slower than he'd started, he was probably doing 1:06-7 the first hundred and around 1:08-09 the rest of the first half and finished 1:12-13 or so.
Probably a little bit faster at the start and a little bit slower at the end!
@@CameronBuchan, slower I can believe but faster? I can't fathom the ridiculous wattage it takes to go sub 1:10, let alone 1:06. On a side note, I chanced upon an old interview with hafthor bjornsson or the mountain from GOT. He mentioned doing 1:19 over 500 on a third attempt on a concept in his gym after which he lost interest in rowing. Do you believe he might get the record after training for a few months? He's got plenty of weight, height and inhuman strength, he doesn't have the agility Phil has though and probably lacks aerobic capacity to last 500 at 1000+ watts without having a stroke.
@ if you go see Phil’s Instagram you’ll see him regularly show 1:03s.
He would be strong enough but around capacity is very very low
Between this one and is previous 1.13 the same 56 strokes
Someone know which Drag Factor hes doing that ?
You can kind of see in the video, around 8-9. If I remember right he talks about 180 in some of his content for his max efforts
My best watts was 557, I think its 1:26 in terms of split. I'm pretty proud of it considering I'm 130-135 pounds
What's his difficulty setting at?
The rowing machine doesn’t have a difficulty setting. The harder you push, the harder it becomes, like running or cycling.
Phil has the fan set to around 8-9 on the scale but that doesn’t mean a 4 or 5 would be easier
Crazy 🎉
@cameron - Im a novice at indoor rowing , I consistently hit 20 mins for 5,000metres after a 500m warmup
I row at resistance 9.5 lever .
Any general tips to break 20min barrier ?
My best time is 20.07 I believe
bring your fan setting between a 3 and 4. Drag factor at 115-125
@@samcaplan4646 thanks - I will and does this make my row harder ? Is 3-4 best to replicate on the water ?
@@Dominic712 It basically lets the fan run longer so that it mimics the run of a boat on the water. It will mean that you can rate a bit higher and still have a controlled recovery
@@samcaplan4646 cheers that explains it
@@Dominic7124-5 replicates water on a brand new rowing machine. If the machine gets dusty then you might need to increase it to 5-6
Incredible!
Decided to watch this after trying to beat my gym record of 1:31, I failed with 1:36 but still good effort i think for no training or preparation lol. Ps. I nearly passed out in the carpark after leaving the gym
Fair enough!
I can hit the low 1.20s for a couple of strokes, but would be in the high 1.30s for a complete 500m.
Solid scores!
this is such a ridiculous pace! my goodness
When I was 17 I touched 1:10 at the start of a 100m school competition, and definitely I was excited about it. Unfortunately I made a false start and at the second try I was slower. I've never seen that split anymore🤣
How interesting... My arse touches my heels on my stroke ! Seems a short stroke is the way to go !
For shorter distances yes shorter legs are usually better as you cannot have as high stroke rate at full length.
Also consider the path of the handle, it’s not really short overall. Just not using as much legs. Especially considering Phil is 6ft 10
what was the old record?
his prior best?
I can’t remember specifically if his best was the previous world record. He did hold it previously but not sure if his previous was it! Was 1:10 point something
Beautiful
Rowing is God. Next level big phil ❤
what is that in cal/hr?
3152 calories per hour is 1:15 I think 1:10 is around 3700 ish
@@CameronBuchan that's easy. I can reach that in 5 minutes. a bar of chocolate, a Twix, some gummi................. ah to BURN?! okay, I'm off.
how many calories?
3837/hour avg
He is almost done 😢😂
Incredible! What is Phil's PB for the 1000m?
I think around 240
@@CameronBuchan Solid. I love the fact that Eddie Hall's older brother (James) is the world record holder in the 1000m (2:39.3)
@@CarlFredrik-uo1cu yeah it’s interesting
we are taught a seat and a way of rowing. However, if you look closely at all the records, take the time to watch them, they are executed almost behind the scenes. Moral of the story, row any way you want to perform !!!!!
Incredible upper body power
Legs probably alright too 😂
1350? That's it? I hit 1350 cal....wait, did you say WATTS?!
I think I've hit 1:20 for like 2 strokes , 1:09 for 500 is insane
How much does this guy weigh?
58 strokes?
Damper setting?
You can see in the video it’s around 8 so approximately 180
59 strokes? Did I count that right!?
I got 55 seconds once but the rower was set to the wrong model 😂.
54 strokes ( I counted?) superhuman
holy shit. terrifying
Incredible
does concept 2 do drug testing for world records? no accusations of course im just wondering if someone could get on gear and have an unfair advantage, this goes for the longer distances too
Unfortunately not. Most people say there isn’t enough money in rowing for it to matter but I don’t agree!
Congrats, I could BeaT iT.
Amazing 👏👏👏👏👍
Does 10k rowing help with running at all??
Rowing is a cardio workout with low impact. It can be quite good to supplement running training
I’m at 1:12 and o don’t even train
Amazing! You’d have the world record no problem!
Im j 13 my lowest split is 1:25
I'm not sure he should try that without someone else in the gym!
Wow! What stroke rate?... oh, 47
59 strokes
1.14 I can get to in 3 seconds and hold for about 5 seconds and hold 1.16 up to 15 seconds, im in my 50's.
Nice!
My fastest split is 1:06 and I weigh 74kg.
I was about to call bullshit then saw your name. There aren't many lightweights who can do that. 💪

Nice work! Would be great to see it!
@@CameronBuchan my replies keep getting removed, not sure why. There are some examples on my channel.
@@tysonwhitt723 UA-cam doesn’t like links maybe? Checked out your UA-cam. Pretty fast stuff!
LET'S GO PHIL! 1:09.8 is outrageous for 500m. Sub 1:05 soon?😂
Why not?!?
Sub-1:05 will probably never happen, that requires 24% more watts than Phil's piece here. That would be equivalent to dropping the 2k record from 5:35 to 5:14.
@@coltonjohnston2927 Yes I know its impossible but I said it merely as a joke.
My fastest is 1:15 but I’m 160 and 16yo

Lost form towards the end, pretty poor effort tbh!
Seen me do 1:08 at 2 am in the gym
Yeah he should have really went much faster

Great work!!
Not easy l know but if he was able to keep the chain straight on the recovery then he would be able to generate EVEN MORE power. Pulling on a wavy chain means some time and power is lost pulling out the wavy bits. Amazing row nonetheless and maximum respect fella.
1.20 500m for me, hoping to break 1.18 soon
You got this 💪
Technique is awful
What would you change?
I am a scrub and I think this is trolling. If you really are going for world record there would be 2nd camera behind you so that you can show monitor of concept 2.
Again scrub here but I don't think he was breathing correctly or even had great strokes. This is what you see when people think that they are going fast but in reality they aren't.
And last scrub thought...you would insta loosen the straps or you would get cramp and if you are spent...with no way to get up and having a cramp in leg...it would be alot of screaming in agony.
Am I at this level ? No. (is that guy at this level...I also don't think so)
Do I think this is fake ?
Why is it that so many hide the actual monitor when they do the rowing ? Not just this...even videos of for 500m, 2km..whatever..they just put a countdown clock in top corner and row.
Simple.
@
As I said, this isn’t supposed to be proof.
It’s not worth it to appease one person
Maybe contact Phil and discuss with him how you think his records are fake
@@CameronBuchan Excuses.
And you are not appeasing one person. If you are going for "world record"...you are going versus world in a sesne. So if there would be a list of top 10, top 100, top 1000, etc...there would need to be proof. And on a rowing machine side view isn't enough.
It's not hard putting camera behind you. It's not. Not behind you behind you...but behind so that it records monitor.
@@Waywardification it’ll be ok
