Hi everyone! I'm an American from the Northeast (New England). I want to create a watering hole for people who want to discuss, learn and teach about history through UA-cam videos which you guys recommend to me through the comment section or over on Discord. Let's be respectful but, just as importantly, not be afraid to question any and everything about historical records in order to give us the most accurate representation of the history of our species and of our planet!

When he's impersonating the German guy, he's speaking German with English grammar, basically. So if you know a little German and English, you get the gist.
When he's doing the hip thrusts and all of that stuff, he's going on about football/soccer results. Singing "You're shit and know you are" (Sie sind Scheiss und sie kennen sie sind) about England who were "Auss in die erste Raunde" (Out in the first round). He's also talking about how Germany beat Argentina in the final and gave them a very nice Arschficken (..."backside romping" *cough* ) and how they beat Brazil 7-1. He also sings "Es kommt zu Hause" (It's coming home), which is what English fans are known to sing when they get anywhere past the initial rounds.
It’s German for non-German-speaking English people. The German equivalent of “Frenglish”.

Fritz Messerschmitt on extension 109. The Messerschmitt ME109 was one of the most dangerous Luftwaffe fighter planes during the second world war
it was the most widely used and the most built but the tag of the dangerous Luftwaffe fighter would have to go to the Focke Wulf, that plane was just something else. Well that is what I think anyways

The Messerschmitt Bf109 was one of the more prolific fighter plane models in the Luftwaffe during the earlier part of WW2, especially around the time of the Battle of Britain. A lot of the other names of the Germans he mentions later in the sketch are also references to German WW2 planes, military equipment, etc.
Whilst I believe that Al Murray is, himself, pretty-much fluent in German, what he's speaking here is actually what we'd call "Dinglish", which is a comedic, semi-nonsense mix of mostly German and some English, aimed at an English audience, and so most of the grammar and phrasing is English, just using predominantly German vocabulary (much of which he gets pretty spot-on here). A similar thing exists between French and English, called "Franglais".

The Irish reference to borrowing moneys is ( i think!) reference to Irelands "tiger economy" a few years back which was built on cheap credit and caused them major issues when big global finance collapse happened

The black labrador whose name he can't mention is a clever reference to the 1955 movie "The Dambusters" which any Brit of a certain age will have seen a zillion times. In the movie, Guy Gibson's black labrador is the 617 Squadron mascot and is named "the N word" which 80yrs ago didnt have the same connotation as it does today.

The Messerschmitt joke is about one of THE German fighter aircraft of WWII, the Bf-109 equivalent to the Spitfire or Mustang... similar in that all three had a supercharged V-12 engine, the main difference was the Germans used them inverted, also there was their superchargers, Roots vs. Centrifugal.
*** the joke about the "Favourite Black Labrador" is a dig at the P.C. police wanting to expunge the name of Sir Guy Gibson's dog, Gibson was the Squadron Leader of the Dambusters in WWII, the dog was famously their mascot, tragically was run over whilst the Squadron were over Germany, and was buried in the gardens adjacent to the HQ of their airfield. Firstly the name was that N word that rhymes with digger, secondly the remains were found in fairly recent redevelopment of the site, with an intention of interring them beneath the new anniversary monument.... but wanting to change the name to start with D.

I am really surprised you didn't get 109 joke, after all the history vlogs you've done. I have watched this sketch a nuber of times with other US reactors and they double up when the US characters appear. So Al must of nailed the stereotype! I so enjoy your reactions, that they make me lol too.

The black Labrador joke is a reference to the British War Movie the Dam Busters
Not just the movie, Guy Gibsons dog was real as was his name 'N****r', He was hit by a car and killed on the day of the Dambusters raid. In 2020 his gravestone was replaced with one which didn't include his name because some people thought it offensive!
@5:22 It's just a big war reference, the Messerschmitt 109 was the primary German fighter plane of WW2. Oh yeah and the bit after, he's translating common English footbal chants into German lol. He's saying "You're shit and you know you are" and "it's coming home". Also the bit about "arschfecken" Argentina... well it's funnier if you work it out for yourself lol.

His German is definitely not perfect but to be honest he does pronounce most of the words pretty well. I'm curious how much German he can actually speak. You should check out the documentary series he did on Germany, it was very nice.
According to a video from 2016, while speaking to Henning Wehn, he states his german isn't good, but his sister is fluent, and she translates things for him.

Its not perfect german, just short sentences and single words, but you can certainly follow what he is saying.
It should be a fair bit, since his mother came from Austria.

Hiroshima and Nagasaki were the 2 Japanese cities the US nuked in WW2...I have recently visited Hiroshima..and visited the Atomic Dome..and the Peace Museum...Reading the stories of the childern and being able to put names and faces to them is quite something.

Dambuster - the chap in charge of 633 sqn had a black lab whose name i can't type here. It was run over just before the mission and died. Hence a successful mission would be confirmed by using that word / dogs name

Readjustment is what he really means, its a truer price and closer to there actual value. but keeping it close to the true price they don't make their money so they inflate the price a lot.
