Marvelous and BEAUTIFUL antiques. that teardrop needs a bit adjustment but it works great. Rarely you see that set up, 2 masts lol. WRRS gates as old as the teardrop itself. beautiful video!
Great find and catch! Love those classics, especially the Teardrop! It appears one of the signals has Safetran 12x24 inch lights, while the 8 inch lights on the other are cast-iron WRRS 8 inch lights, a normal WRRS 8 inch light, and what appears to be a Federal Signal 8 inch light.
I don't know if you're on Facebook but I've posted a more detailed description of everything going on at this crossing in the group "Railroad Signals." A few years ago the other signal also had a 3564 mech and 8" lights. So those are fairly recent changes. The 8" lights on the "main" signal are two WRRS 950s, one aluminum WRRS 970, and an aluminum Western-Cullen model. Also, there's a shot in the video showing the crossbuck is mounted to a single bracket which was originally designed to hold a single two-sided crossbuck. An identical bracket would be bolted to the other side for the other sign.
This on the remnant of the old Wabash 4 th sub. That line used some oddball signals. There used to be a set of flashers in Wolcottville that had STOP signals under the flashers...
Wow, I have never seen something in that configuration before! The last interesting old signal I saw was one that had a cantilever mounted to a utility pole with the cross buck and lower lights mounted to the pole the same as the traditional cantilever signal. The bell (also a teardrop) was above the lights on the cantilever. The gate was on a separate post about 3’ high. It’s probably gone by now because I know the section of railroad, the former NY Central which was part of Penn Central then Conrail was removed long ago. The signals remained for a few years after the track was gone, but I can no longer find them. The utility pole probably was replaced at some point. I have some pictures of it somewhere.
It would have really been a treat to see the signal shanty with the doors open. While they probably have modernized the track circuits to a PMD, I bet it still has all the lunchbox relays for everything else.
There was some transitional time between railroads and locations. Wooden "a-frame" gates were black and white and then red and white. If you remember black & white striped gates, you probably also remember black crossbucks with white lettering. Maybe black & yellow striped gates.
Nice find! I've never seen a uS&S teardrop bell used with gates before! And it's even used on a line that's still used for freight! This crossing equipment should go to a museum, or at least be restored, and used in its current spot!
I think this design was so wishbone gates could be added. if you see older crossings from like the 70s, you can see they have arms moving the lights away from the mast so there can be a wishbone gate installed.
the crossing gate used to be a wishbone style one. The metal base is wide enough to justify the dimensions for it. Yeah, I like the old signals. Signs of another time gone past.
Cool video ! Gosh these signals really need to be maintained and some TCL . The WRRS builder plate looks so rusty . Nice equipment. Here in Australia we have some of that equipment like WRRS gate mechs which are pretty rare , quite a bit of newer WCH ( WRRS decedent ) equipment and our own Australian teardrop bell made by Mck&h/Westinghouse! I also film crossings, except in Australia
There was a place in my town where a teardrop bell and lights used to be but have been removed then they came back and snapped the bases off and replaced the poles
These look like a Wabash/ N&W install. They used to have some in Milan, MI at the junction with the Ann Arbor. There are some old videos on UA-cam with them
I think a museum would take that signal from what I remember that's an old Western Railroad Supply signal I've seen him before at Six Flags Over Texas most of the gate signals are Western Road Supply signals like that with the double poles on the mound
These are like ones in alburtis near where I live except no trains go there since there is another crossing right near the abandoned one and sometimes we will pass it going places
The signal itself is old expect the gate. I'm assuming they cut the middle of the old signal and attached it to the gate mechanism. Very cheap installation.
I thought that looked like Gary. Old Wabash line, coming out of the sugar plant. Bout 3-4 years ago they made a bunch of changes to the line, and it's pretty much gone west of there. Joins with the old Michigan Central just east of Broadway.
Our railroad infrastructure is so old and decrepit compared to places like Europe where they don't waste so much money on political pet projects and instead it's spent for the benefit of customers and passengers.
I love the old teardrop bells, when they start clicking like that, just oil it up and it'll stop missing a strike!
I thing the click is what makes them iconic
There only one bell
It’s actually when the gong needs rotating
Marvelous and BEAUTIFUL antiques. that teardrop needs a bit adjustment but it works great. Rarely you see that set up, 2 masts lol. WRRS gates as old as the teardrop itself. beautiful video!
BBT609 the last teardrop bell we had around here was oiled by a signal maintainer and it was pretty loud after that!!

Nice work dude, glad to see & hear those old school warning signals in action.
Should be taken to a museum and not junked, once it's replaced.
Yes
Its still there!
We've heard they have recently been replaced.
That is a shame ;(
Someone should go back and check for proof.

Cool train action.
• Cheers from The Detroit & Mackinac Railway 🚂
When I was a kid, the crossing gates used to be painted black & white (instead of red & white).
I think they changed sometime during the 1980s.
1VaDude I also remember that
They were already red and white in the 70s, at least, in Indiana.
There was some transitional time between railroads and locations. Wooden "a-frame" gates were black and white and then red and white. If you remember black & white striped gates, you probably also remember black crossbucks with white lettering. Maybe black & yellow striped gates.
In finland we have red & yellow
I remember the old wishbone crossing gates..

Used to be a set of these in Limedale, Ind where the old PRR St Louis main line crossed the road.

The bell is kinda like a remix with the lights and the teardrop bells are awesome so it’s good as a remix
Great catch with NS 4703!
There was a place in my town where a teardrop bell and lights used to be but have been removed then they came back and snapped the bases off and replaced the poles
🚂 Awesome video ! 👍🏻
Reminds me of a few crossings in Melbourne, Australia. (Particularly the Ivanhoe crossing.)

amazing those are still working
Think they are gone now
When did this railway crossing start function?
Great catch
The New crossings of 2 GS Type 3 Electronic Bells, Siemens Gate Mechinsam, Red LED Lights new Gates And More!
Yea and that sucks
What type of locomotive is NS 4703? It looks a lot like the Lego Cargo Train 60052.
Dang I miss the old DLR style crossings.
They should put them on a historical train route that would be fun having all that old power with the old crossing
I hope this vintage railroad crossing signal doesn’t get removed
Sadly The Old WRRS Signals Were Replaced
I was wondering if the rusty old bucket worked?
Looks like Chicago area, where exactly is this?
It is Virginia Street in Gary Indiana.
Thought that looked like the Sugar House job.
The signal itself is old expect the gate. I'm assuming they cut the middle of the old signal and attached it to the gate mechanism. Very cheap installation.
These were replaced not long ago. Cant say they nicely handled the removal of these. Tried to save the bell but no luck with that.
Are they really gone? Did they replace both signals?
@@upking9080 yep
NS use to have a lot of these signals where I grew up in Saint Louis.
They had that style in Springfield ill also
What are these signals called?
Is that your drop bell dying?😢
Id like to see the inner-workings of train signals. Anyone know where I can find a video of that? Thanks!
Yes here's the link ua-cam.com/video/LWEvYkjeN6I/v-deo.html
They look like good crossings if they can be fixed up
Anyone notice that the locomotive was a gp22eco?
Yah
Awesome stuff man
I didn’t know these old grandpa signals were still in active
Is this crossing gate still operational?
I'd shrug.
Great video. Where is this crossing located at?
Virginia Street, Gary Indiana.
Nathan Rigby I'm from Gary Indiana !!!!! Hey
I thought that looked like Gary.

those signals were most likely southern's railroad crossing signals but it could have been n&w
Had a crossing like this in Rialto Calif.
Remove rust with rust convertor yes. Then add new paint yes. Oil bell yes. Reposition sensor for earlier activation yes. Replace no.
And possibly put new bigger lights too!
they had been replaced
@@canadiannationalrailfanner2453 have a picture of the new ones?? Sad but I guess not unexpected
where is this crossing?
Is this in Illinois?
3 : 00 that's the new norfrok southern railway gopro unit !!!
You ain't kidding!
Just as long as they work that's what matters.
Real shame that these antique signals got replaced. :(
Where is this?
Nice that was a loud k5la train horn.
how old is this?
Why was the train going slow?
It's on a spur, coming out of a factory
Ya know a place with crossings very similar to this is.. Six Flags Over Texas
Why it says two tracks when it's only one
Must have been a double tracked one when installed
Wow, this has to be super old since of how rusty it looks
awesome
What town is this in
Lee Mikel Gary Indiana
Are they still here
yes
Sad they took out track number 2 though!
Tear drop warning bells old school.. WC Hayes or RACO
Wow this look like Gary Indiana
That looks like a Railroad Crossing from the 1930'S And those signals are really rusty.
I think you are looking for 2:35

It is.
I agree

Gary, Indiana. Not many folks care. Great place to find stuff like this, tho.
I bet these are replaced now
ModernForever still there it sounds like
ModernForever replaced now. Just went and got the teardrop bell yesterday.
@@mohkfry you really did get the teardrop bell from here?
Chuttlely yes it’s currently in storage
Sounds like a wig wag bell lol
dying US&S teardrop bell.
Maybe it's just not getting enough power?

Paul Drake I like the old railroad signal's, brings back memories of going to my grandparents house getting stopped by a train.
Um, nearly all US trackage is privately owned. The railroads as well. Why spend money replacing working signals?

They should be replaced with Safe Tran signal with electronic bell....
No the steel bells are the only good ones. The electronic bells are boring.
