Yes of course we can, and using generative principles is the easiest way to overcome your creative blockages and generate unlimited melodic and harmonic inspiration. Lets get it! as someone who is rlllly new to modular synths and is only rly able to use programs to do it, this was rly helpful to understand why it does what it does

    This is amazing and I thank you. I am so glad you mentioned Nils Frahm! He is literally the composer I heard who sent me to VCV Rack 2 and Cardinal.

    Excellent video! I’ve been using the sequencer > VCA > quantizer routing you talked about here a LOT and it’s made everything so much more interesting.

    Forgive me for my ignorance but given that you have a sequencer that plays a "range of octaves" and you modulated that range wouldn't that be the same thing that's going on with the VCA here? For example in Ableton there's various sequencers you can use that will play notes in an octave range like C1-C4, so the VCA is doing the same thing right? The voltage is the initial range then the limiter within the initial range allows you to go from let's say C1-C4 to C1-C2? So in Ableton if I just automated that range it'd be the same thing?

    • @RyanMurgatroydMusic
      @RyanMurgatroydMusic  10 місяців тому +2

      No, not exactly because that would only create variations that have an octave interval. The Vca is forcing intervals and voicings that contain any/all notes that are in the quantiser.. Its a huge difference in the outcome.

    Awesome video, very informative and expertly explained. One request, I'm using miRack on an ipad which is very similar but not quite the same. In future videos, maybe a very brief description on why you love the modules you choose. Sometimes I have to grab those closest approximation to what you're using and it would help when 5 of em look real close. Thanks either way.

      The plaits oscilator is great because it has 18 unique sounds that can be tweaked extensively. The plateau reverb is a community favourite and very lush. The sequencer Ryan uses here actually isn't his (or my) top pick. The best sequencer out there is koralfx scorovnik. The reason is that it shows exactly what notes each step is playing so a quantizer isn't needed. For the utility modules (quantizers, clocks, mixers, vca etc) just use whatever works for you. The digital sequencer he uses is also great, and he does explain why: it acts as an LFO but you can draw in your own custom shape.

    This is well explained and interesting! One thing I hate about VCV and I can speak for many here is that you find a patch, load it up an then it reports 'modules not found'.So then you try to work out what to find or download. Why it doesn't just load them all or ask you ' do you wish to download these modules?'. Of course some are paid for and you can't download them....but as a beginner it is really offputting to see that message.Many a time I have just given up at that point. Also with VCV you go to load something and it says 'VCV is already running'! That is so annoying! So you can't just go through patches easily. I don't understand the logic in it. Having said that, VCV is truly amazing....your video was interesting in that you approached it from a musical point of view. It's also simple. So many patches make your head hurt on youtube! You explained it very well...and sharing the knowledge is a good thing to do. Thank you.

    I like this tutorial, it caters well to both beginner and more advanced vcv rack players.
    Maybe a noob question, but where are you getting that bass sound at the beginning from? I only see one oscillator plugged to the mix. You are using a midi bass, but it's not wired to vcv, right?

  • @axs203
    @axs203 2 роки тому

    I was also thinking last night ' VCV should have a facility where it can create it's own patches randomly' / add modules and put them together ! :)

    • @Tennisers
      @Tennisers 2 роки тому +2

      most patches generated purely randomly, by putting random outputs into random inputs, would be junk. it's probably doable though.
