  • Very best of J.P Rameau Harpsichord works. (Dynamic Sound Remastering)

For a 1975 record, the remastering is outstanding...sounds so pristine with much dynamic and reverb...They must have used NASA microphones back in the times...Eternal thanks to Scott Ross, this magnificent performer of french Baroque...not only French baroque but I feel the most magic emanates when he played Couperin, Rameau...

Rameau is the key composer of the late baroque French music. Hi main contribution is the "opéra ballet" and the "tragédie lyrique " - a world still to be widely explored - but his harpsichord music is important as well - especially when Scott Ross renders it !!!!!!!

How wonderful that Scott Ross chose the harpsichord as his favourite musical instrument, so we can listen to such a stellar interpretation of Rameau's music. Sadly, Ross left this world too early.

After years of endless admiration for Vivaldi, Telemann and Handel, I discovered J.P. Rameau. He pretty much overshadowed the other great composers in my focus.

I truly e n j o y e d this performance. Joy. Beauty. Delight. Excellent work by Rameau, not just any music by any means. And then done justice by the superb artistry, taste, craft of Scott Ross. And on what sounds to me like an unusually fine sounding instrument (with a delightful assortment of stops). All with micing that brings it to the astounded listener completely fresh and exciting. Blown away.

Solo harpsichord music was apparently a low priority for Rameau. This is all of it that he ever published, isn't it? Yet he was perhaps the greatest harpsichord composer in France. If l'entretien des muses doesn't move you, what will?

If this was a low priority for Rameau, I can only imagine how extraordinary he might have been had this been otherwise!

Just to note, the pieces on this UA-cam are definitely not Rameau's complete works for harpsichord. This is a compilation of excerpts from all 3 of his major collections ("livres"). Here is a recording of the complete known works: ua-cam.com/video/GRPYpjLP9qA/v-deo.html (Actually I think it's where these excerpts were taken from; both recordings are Scott Ross.) It does seem to be true that opera was an even bigger priority for Rameau, but the clavier music is still pretty substantial. =)
