Alpaca alarm calls

Watch out! Dogs about!
Watch the larger ladies’ behaviour as some footpath walkers go past with their dogs. These are beautifully behaved dogs, on leads, but the alpacas still see them as a threat.
Listen out for the alarm calls. This is how alpacas alert all other alpacas nearby that there is a threat.
The animals at the front, approaching the dogs would make the best guard alpacas (protect lambs and chickens) whereas those at the back would probably be less good. Not all alpacas guard!
Alpacas are unusual, in that they approach a threat. They rely on numbers and really only have stamping as an attack weapon.
We ask dog walkers to walk quickly and calmly past the alpacas, with their dogs in a lead, keeping to the footpath, as it is stressful to the alpacas in adjacent fields.
