  • Great Western Air Ambulance Charity was called to mum, Niky's, four-year-old daughter when she found her in bed not breathing. Jasmine was unconscious, suffering a respiratory arrest and in need of emergency care, fast. GWAAC's helicopter and Critical Care Team were dispatched to the incident in Gloucestershire.
The video shows how Jasmine's story unfolded when Critical Care Doctors Scott and Andrew, and Specialist Paramedic in Critical Care, Jack, arrived on the scene less than 20 minutes after the call-out.
Jasmine was very unwell. She had stopped breathing and needed an emergency anaesthesia - an intervention that our specialist crew can deliver on scene. They put Jasmine into an induced coma, taking over her breathing and preventing any further complications, before airlifting her to Bristol Royal Hospital for Children.
Great Western Air Ambulance Charity (GWAAC) attends the most critical incidents across the region by helicopter or by critical care car. When someone is seriously ill or injured time is of the essence, and they need expert help fast. This is where we come in. Though we are part of the regional 999 response service and work closely with NHS hospitals, we are a charity entirely funded by local people just like you.

They said they induced a coma for her. How did that help her situation? I'm unfamiliar with that kind of procedure and how it helps. Does anyone know to explain?

They induced a coma by giving intravenous drugs because they had to intubate and when you intubate a person whose unconscious and not breathing you don’t want them by chance miraculously waking up and see someone sticking an endotracheal tube down their throat to help them breathe and the person panic and freak out
