I think you've got the wrong end of the stick with Rising Damp. It was actually quite a clever comedy for the time, it's self conscious and is a snapshot of the 70s that few other shows at the time could reflect.
1) Vienna was Rigsbys cat. 2) All the actors in Rising Damp, Till death us do part, Only fools and horses etc. were most definitely not racist and welcomed the opportunity the shows made to mock racism.
One of the great British sitcoms with memorable and much loved characters especially Rossiters portrayal of land lord Rigsby . Watched them at the time and still make me laugh today . Classic and timeless comedy .
Vienna wasn’t Miss Jones’ cat - she was Rigsby’s!! Where are the rumours that have been confirmed by the cast?? I see no mention of the rumour/fact that Leonard Rossiter and Frances de la Tour didn’t get on at all!! How about the fact that Frances de la Tour was in the audience the night that Leonard Rossiter died, seeing as we’re seeing everything BUT rumours?!
@@alancrisp1582 Just you then. A 'classic' means that it maintains its status despite Precious Princesses and Snowflakes. People will still be laughing at this when your gravestone has faded so much that people cannot read your name.
What pity producers of these videos can't do something other than point out the obvious difference between forty years ago and today. The past is history leave it, it can't be changed.
I think the thing to bear in mind is the saying, 'The past is a different country, they do things differently there'. I lived in a similar house back then after I left school and started work in a different town. In fact our landlord was a lot like Rigsby! The only difference was our house did not have a Miss Jones; however it was racially diverse, being in a port city. Any humour that featured race was certainly both ways and I never saw any signs of racism; but then we were all in similar circumstances and just got on with it!
I watched it every week.. It was funny and as you say quite racist but that seemed the norm at that time.. Love thy neighbour and spike Milligans curry and chips and Till death us do part were others in a similar vein.. Leonard Rossiter did another sitcom after this called The Rise and fall of Reginald Perrin.. Richard Beckinsale was father of actress Kate Beckinsale.. He was also in Porridge with Ronnie Barker
Sad that Frances De La Tour apparently indulged in a bit of retroactive virtue signalling in order to belatedly criticise a show that greatly aided her career. Without context though it’s possible she felt pressured/encouraged to do so (by an interviewer perhaps) given the dubious times we live in but still. Regardless, whilst plenty of folk happily acknowledge the old maxim that one should ‘never judge history by modern standards’ few seem to actually adhere to it… 😉
I watched this as a kid and still watch it today on dvd because all the Tv stations are pussies to broadcast it because of the shitty ass woke world we live in today. Like they said in the video it was a product of its time
The use of racially based comments was met with common sense and an understanding that there was no malicious intent at a time when people were intelligent enough to see the difference!
Casting back then was superb. This, Fawlty Towers, Porridge, Man about the House, all had the correct actors to fit the parts. Now it's all woke. And this show wasn't racist, Philip was the cool dude who made Rigsby look stupid. He was the one who got the last laugh.
After Rising Damp, Richard Beckinsale was considered capable of playing the lead role given his own programme, Bloomers. Only the first two episodes were made and were quite good. Don Warrington was known to point out to the others that he was a "Classically Trained Actor".
you know once upon a time it was us and them and for them it was them and us they were happy being them and we were happy being us then the them moved to where the us was and we were no longer allowed to be us and them but the them is still allowed to be them and us towards what used to be us

The cat had that name because when Rigsby put it out at night it was good night Vienna
Vienna the cat belongs to Rigsby.
It was and still is funny
🤫🤢 Nonsense, it might have been funny to some ,way back then . But it is not funny to day . !.😮
To each their own

@@alancrisp1582 I knew a guy named Terry Crisp. He was a prick as well.
And who always comes out the but of the joke in the end? The white guy!

I thought Vienna was Rigsby's cat.

Definitely we should watch it. All cultures have their own Quirk's and shouldn't be taken seriously.
The two lads have separate rooms.
Vienna was rigbys cat
Best ever😊

We're happy to know that you're a fan of the show. In your opinion, what is its best episode?

Who are the people in the photo at 6:10? I don't recognise any of them.
Most likely the cast of the American version.
@@Ross.Cavendish Thanks, I didn't even know there had been an American version.
The only funny sitcom ever written by itv.

What rumours are confirmed in this video? Clickbait won't get me to subscribe to your otherwise informative content.
He didn't actually mention any rumours - so he couldn't very well confirm anything! 🙄 😂
What a load of crap ! "Cast Confirms the Rumors" ? what rumors ? click bate, nothing more, it was a great program showing the talents of all involved.
This video is BS.
It's a classic.
This was a groundbreaking series with an enlightened attitude to race.
We absolutely agree! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. Which episode of the show appealed to you the most?
Woke crap, it was a great show.
It ended 45 years ago. So why drag all of this up now ????
Sans badness: How old are you, Mod?
Your drag-up time will come, soon enough, when you hopefully understand.
With respect. Rab 👋 🕊
Watched this as a kid back at the time. Enjoyed it. If I was to watch it now it would be very much of its time though
Never forgetting Richard in: *The Lovers.* ✝
With Paula Wilcox and no Percy Filth.

WHAT RUMOURS?? If there were any, the film does not mention them or confirm anything. Again - what rumours?
Yes great show, I have a off and on button on my TV , there are loads of show I use the off button for
What were the rumours?

Rising damp was the "first" main stream sit com, to highlight " female genital mutilation".
Titter!
Rising Damp is a classic.
