    ...Duran Duran were at Exit festival a few years ago. Simon Le Bon held the mic out to a girl in the crowd to sing the next line. Unfortunately for Simon it was new material, neither girl nor crowd knew. He held the microphone out for an uncomfortably long time. It was upsetting to all involved...
    ...just thought you'd like to know

    Glad you're talking about Stories Untold!
    I started it while my girlfriend was sitting next to me, and we were instantly caught up, I mostly by it's subversion of these traditional game ideas and structure, and her by the creepy setting and it's ability to convey tension (she's also a scaredy cat).
    This game is thoroughly worth anyone's time and worth sticking through its short runtime to the end.

    First place I saw that protagonist-is-you thing was with Uplink (though I'm sure it's been done before). But yeah, it's very effective! When I played it in uni (with not enough sleep and too much caffeine) I genuinely didn't answer a knock on my door because I thought it was the feds after me for all my hacking.

    Arrrghh! Another amazing game that I (literally) fear to play!
    As soon as Quins said "creeps you out" I'm like "Nope, can't play this!" - I can't do horror. *hangs head in quiet, yet accepting, shame*

      Try the demo! It's the scariest part in the game. If you can make it past it, you can play the whole game, no problem! (Probably - people get freaked out for different stuff.)

      It’s more of a thriller than a horror game, but it is still amazing

    This is the kind of stuff I have been looking for! I remember Hacker on the ZX-spectrum/C64 and this reminds me of that feeling of trying to work out what to do, and what's going on.

    Fuck VR is something I can agree with, I'd much rather see innovation in storytelling and gameplay concepts than endless tech upgrades of the same couple of types of games.
    Also, might be overkill considering Quinns' essays on the original Pathologic, but I wonder if there's anything in the works on The Marble Nest? :^)

    I love you guys, yet another great, very on-point video! The game does achieve exactly what you describe and should be admired for that. However, I also hated it in the end due to the extremely poor text parser and a game crash which would require replaying last 20 minutes and typing in case-sensitive (!) commands.
    I would suggest: play the demo, skip the rest?

      your friend, eve it's been ages since I've played it, but if i remember correctly toggling the difficulty level is key to getting through it. the ending is something of an emotional gutpunch and worth seeing imo.

    It would be super sweet and very considerate if you would identify the platforms supported by the games that you mention. I try not to get invested in games I'm not likely to get a chance to play... You could use a subtle super to avoid messing with your flow.

    Your comment about VR is very true - I'm not anti-VR, but the technology is a distraction currently. The games you've mentioned have the power to stay with you for years.

  • @misomiso8228
    @misomiso8228 7 років тому

    Soma was very good.
    I thought it really made you think A LOT, and the horror got so in your head that it freaked you out in ways other games havn't.
    BUT if I'm being honest I don't think the gameplay was as good as other 'survival horror' games like Silent Hill. It was almost more of a visual novel than a proper horror game.
    Hopefully for the next one they'll be able to marry good gameplay with their mindf*** stories.

    I feel bad in that I can't agree with Quinns (and Matt) about Beginner's Guide. I played it and really didn't enjoy it, after having loved the Stanley Parable. I know the point was to detail the experiences that the maker (author?) had around creating things but it ultimately felt oddly selfish a creation for something that was ultimately meant to be played by other people. Probably part of that was the point, I'm not going to pretend to understand what he was trying to do with it and I'm sure much of it was above my head, but I went in wanting to learn from it and came out feeling frustrated.

    • @Kalpen_
      @Kalpen_ 7 років тому

      fair enough dude, I get where you're coming from in some respect. I loved the game and I think part of that came from the fact I went in completely blind, I even forgot it was from the same guy as stanley parable. I feel that going into the game without wanting more stanley parable might have helped, comparing them is apples and oranges really. With B.G. it's more of a weird character story with a genius USP. But each to their own, I might give it another play through and give it some thought

      Ben Robinson Hot tip: look up my Steam review of it, under "Makadon". I listed some pitfalls to avoid with the game's design to get the most out of it. It has some nasty flaws but if you steer clear, it's really something.

    • @starshock2002
      @starshock2002 7 років тому +3

      honestly I always think of half life as a sort of citizen kane moment in gaming. Citizen kane isn't really highly regarded for being a great film so much as it is for using the visual capabilities of film to change the way we tell stories. It was the first time people used the movement of the camera and composition of the shot to tell the story. Half life tried to do the same thing, use the capabilities of gaming to tell the story, rather than, gameplay section, cut scene, gameplay section. That being said Halflife was probably not the first to try it, but it probably was one of the first games do it successfully enough that it got copied a whole bunch. :p

    • @flaetsbnort
      @flaetsbnort 6 років тому +1

      Agreed! The ending is a cop out, and also feels someone holding you down and saying HEY THANKS FOR PLAYING SPORT NOW HERE'S WHAT THE GAME'S REALLY ABOUT. The two other sections are pretty good though, it's almost over it. If it didn't hit players over the head with an explanation and at least gave us the leeway to come up with our own it'd be brilliant.
