  • Today I talk briefly about the modifications I done on my 2014 Toyota Landcruiser Sahara 200 series that affect the vehicles weight.
    We then empty the car out and take it over a registered weigh bridge to see exactly how much this vehicle weighs and why I definitely NEED a GVM upgrade!

    This is a real eye opener and shows how the vehicle manufactures are happy to sell 4x4 vehicles that are not fit for the purposes they are generally used in Australia. I have a 20 year old Defender 110 and it eclipses most other manufacturers in payload of 960kgs and GCM 6,600kgs. I know the Sarah is safer, quiter has more power and much better brakes than my old truck but at least I don't have to worry every time I take the rig past the cops and scalies.

    G’day Graham. Just last week I came across your videos. You are completely right ! A: the LC 200 should be also in Australia standard rated GVM 3,800kg. B: anybody not doing a GVM upgrade and loads his car and have some accessories on it runs illegal in OZ and is dangerous to other people and that’s a no go in my book! Yes, my 200 has an GVM, brake and tire upgrade, and with twin spare wheel carrier and 180 ltr subtank plus drifta drawer set and basic tools inside weights in 3,200kg. Adding 250 ltr Diesel and 150kg for driver and co driver and a roof rack goes close to maximum. Towing a trailer with 250 kg ball weight ontop even the 3800 kg upgrade would be not enough. So the 2nd. Row seat have to go out ? Stay safe during C-19 and save trips in future. Cheers

      If only Toyota Australia would listen to their customers and help make this happen. It’s scary just to think how many people are driving around out there completely unaware of these limits.

    Well done on a great video. In the video you mention that the specified Kerb Weight includes 10 to 20 litres of fuel but in the Australian Design Rules Tare is defined as including 10 litres of fuel and Kerb is with the fuel tank full. We have a 2019 200 series VX and had our dealer weigh one at the local weighbridge prior to purchase. It had the Low Fuel Light on and weighed 2740kg so allowing for a full fuel tank an estimated 90 to 100kg heavier than the specified value. When we got our GVM upgrade installed the installer told me that the Sahara is about 40kg heavier than the VX. I have checked the axle weights on our vehicle and it is interesting to know that a 200 Series with a number of front accessories such as steel bull bar and 2nd battery etc can exceed the front axle rating if not towing. Once again an great video.

    • @XploringOz
      @XploringOz  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks John. Yeah, it just goes to show how quickly these values can add up when modifying these vehicles like so many of us do. I have noticed that the front axle is technically over the rated value, but I've also found out that since I've had my GVM kit installed, ARB now certify an increase in that front axle load. I don't believe they have changed their kit at all, however they are now able to legal certify this increase.
      With all these modifications, weights, limits etc, I certainly can get mighty confusing when deciding what to do to our vehicles.
      I'm glad you enjoyed the video, thanks.

    Like a lot of us with the 200 series LC's & Patrol owners out there, once we put them on the BBQ plate (weighbridge) we quickly learn that a GVM upgrade is needed & you think all will be ok & sorted right? WRONG, this is what I went through just like you did, except my fully laden weight was 3400 Kgs, with passengers & ready to go with a full tank of fuel & a few tools in the back. Like yourself, no rear tyre carriers or long range fuel tank, I don't even have a roof rack. I have drawers the same as you & a fridge, ARB Bullbar with winch. I am registered in Victoria so I have the unfair advantage of getting both the GVM & GCM upgrades done POST registration. I had the Lovells stage 1 kit installed which gave me 3800 GVM & 7300GCM, so you would think that if I was to hook up my van which weighs in at 3,400Kgs & a tow ball down load of 350KGS I would be fine right as I have 400 Kg's spare & I am only using 350 of it. This is where no one has worked out that I am still over loaded on the rear axle due to the Fulcrum effect of the 350 Kgs tow ball down load weight which actually adds 510 Kgs to the rear axle & not 350 Kgs. Prior to hooking up the van the front axle weighed in at 1,780 Kgs & the rear of course was 1620 Kgs, 380 Kgs spare on the rear until I dropped the van onto the ball, the rear axle then weighed in at 2,130 Kgs whilst the front weighed in at 1,620 Kgs. Over on the rear by 130 Kgs & if caught, put off the road on the spot with a hefty fine, several demerit points as a bonus. Plus you're not covered by your insurance should anything go wrong! By adding weight to the rear of the vehicle you lift the front slightly (as most of us would have noticed from time to time), this transfers the weight from the front axle & adds it to the rear. It can be calculated by multiplying it by 1.45 time the tow ball weight. After spending nearly $6,000 on getting it all installed, certified and approved by the engineers & Vic Roads I am still not legal (very gutting). The only way I can get it legal is by using a Weight Distribution hitch or spend another $6,000 & getting stage 3 installed & certified, but then your ride becomes very rough of course. Keeping in mind the rear axle maximum limit is 2,000 Kgs & the front axle limit is 1,800 Kgs, how many people have actually weighed the axles separately which is the procedure that the Police or Scallies use? Regards, Garry.

    • @XploringOz
      @XploringOz  2 роки тому

      I see where you are coming from here and many people do forget about the axle limits too.
      I guess it depends on how much you are carrying and what you plan on towing. There is a point where the 200 Series Landcruiser just isn't going to be a suitable vehicle when considering how much you are bringing on the trip. This is where light trucks and 6 wheelers come into their own.
      Saying that, there are so many combinations and types of setups to mitigate and assist weight distribution, but in the end it's up to each and every individual to weigh and confirm their personal levels.
      Cheers, Nathan.

    I had to do the same to the Prado, was coming in at 2900 no passengers with a GVM of 2990 that was never going to work, I used an independent engineer to obtain a GVM upgrade on my current suspension allowing me to have a GVM of 3400. I did not want to use the Lovells or Pedders kits, I think that was all that is available for Prado, so now my better Konis and Lovells springs are compliant. happy days, pitty Toyota don't rate these cars for the way we actually use them.

    I love the detail you go into with your videos,
    I have a 2014 200 series and recently purchased a set of drawers for it,
    Upon weighing the vehicle with the drawers (empty ) and a full fuel and just me as a driver the figure came in at 2690kg.
    This looks fine, but when I go into it further with a fridge ( also empty ), drop down fridge slide and just one passenger the weights climb.
    Add just a few tools and an empty caravan tow ball weight of 148kg I am overweight.
    Looking around at a GVM upgrade and visiting a couple of installers who suggested I remove the rear seat belts and have the vehicle declassed as a 5 seater as with the seatbelts left in the vehicle as with yours it remains a 7 seater and with each seat the distributed weight is something like 32kg per seat.
    Do you know of this ? and if so what are the benefits for and against making it a 5 seater on the compliance.
    My head is spinning trying to work it out!

      Hey mate, to be honest it would probably be best to speak with ARB in relation to getting a GVM upgrade with a already fitted kit. There is a series of particular parts that are required and need to be signed off on, before having an authorised inspector review the install. Otherwise, you could also take your current setup to an engineer to have the whole vehicle assessed for its suitability for a GVM upgrade.

    Be interesting to know what the stats are in Australia’s for being over the GVM and it either directly causing an accident or damage to the vehicle when driven safely. How much of a buffer is in this from the manufacture.
    I’d suggest a large majority of touring 4WDs you see out and about fully loaded wouldn’t have GVMs.
    My understanding of GVM upgrades are mainly shocks and springs, is that correct? If that’s the case then how effective are standard spring and shock swaps from factory, to say something like an old man emu or TJM spring/shock lift?

    • @XploringOz
      @XploringOz  3 роки тому

      Sure would an interesting fact to have a look into. Although I do believe these vehicles can handle a lot more then our laws allow, being overweight, without the proper gear or knowledge is dangerous.
      I think there would be a huge amount of vehicles on our roads overweight, with most people completely unaware.
      Most GVM upgrade, including on my LC200 are just springs and shocks, but there are options for higher limits that include full axles replacements along with other mods. Further, if you are upgrading the springs and shocks without GVM compliance etc, the benefit would come in larger and more efficient shocks, providing better dampening and less heat fade.
      Cheers, Nathan.

    • @XploringOz
      @XploringOz  3 роки тому

      Good question, this is probably a matter of personal opinion. For me, I prefer the slightly older models, early 2015 and earlier for a couple of reasons. Firstly, I'm not a fan of DPF filters (diesel particulate filters) in the exhaust. These are only added in for emissions control and have previously caused expensive issues (especially in Toyota's 2.8L engine). Although these filters seem fairly reliable at the moment, what concerns me is the long term reliability and expense of repairing or replacing these components in the future, say 10 years.
      Secondly, again to do with DPF's, purchasing an earlier model is going to allow you to fit a turbo back exhaust (full system) rather than a DPF back exhaust (part system).
      Don't get me wrong, this is just my personal opinion and there is nothing wrong with the new cruisers and to be honest, I prefer the style, both interior and exterior of the new cruisers.
      When I was looking at purchasing, my choice was between a brand new GXL or 2014 Sahara, as you can see, I went with the 2014.
