  • DUSTING! What is it? Why does it occur? Can we prevent it?
    These are some of the questions I answer in today’s video.
    My 2014 Toyota Landcruiser 200 series Sahara 4.5L V8 twin turbo diesel is just like most others and not immune to dust getting into the air intake. I go over some of the theories that float around out there on the forums, what I think and why. I outline some of the many different methods owners use to try and reduce the risk of this issue and show you how I’ve gone about reducing the risk of dusting, whilst still retaining the original factory air box and filter.
    Some of the products I’ve used in today’s video:

    I've gone ahead now and put the terrain tamer gasket on mine. It's similar to what you are doing there, but stainless steel with gasket maker rather than foam. The stainless also has the advantage of making the surface a little wider for the filter to sit on as well as preventing the airbox shape from deforming over corrugations and under suction, especially when hot. It's about $90 delivered but comes with an air filter, so it's actually pretty cheap and only takes 10 minutes to fit.

    Great video Nathan, its just a shame Toyota couldn’t and still haven’t rectified this issue, maybe they will get it right in the new 300 series 😂 I opted to remove the inferior intake box at 3000km and install a custom one. When i took my car in for it’s 10,000km service they asked me why I changed it. I said to them really! You need to ask that question... How about stop denying it’s an issue and resolve it 🤨
    Anyways, keep them coming mate 👍🏽

      Classic corporate responses. They can't be seen to admit a flaw in their vehicles. Either way, with the 300 series on the horizon, I highly doubt anything will be done now to rectify these issues. Maybe one day, I'll be in a position to test a new air box and find that perfect solution. In the meantime, this will have to do. Cheers mate.

    Nice video. The factory airbox has a dust spinner built into it just where the snorkel hooks up to the airbox. It spins dust into a catch can that can be cleaned from inside. But Safari in their wisdom chop that out when you fit an Armax snorkel. The previous safari snorkel is better when it comes to dust.

    Good video explaining the issue, I believe the other issue is the airbox warping.
    For me remove the airbox and replace it with a box that runs a panel filter that does not run a factory filter.

    Hey Nathan, nice idea, Unifilter basically has that stuff on it from the factory, it's also washable and reusable which in turn ends up saving you money. Also, Unifilter is Australian Owned and made so a big plus. It's pathetic that we have to come up with solutions as Toyota is too pig-headed to sort this major issue out! 11:50 worth checking. In our personal vehicles I use UNI foam replacement elements and get ZERO fine dust past the filter. I am aware of another well respected VDJ200 owner and content provider indicating the UNI product is substandard however I have not found this to be the case in our vehicles (NOT VDJ200's) Whether or not there is a sealing issue on the VDJ200 or not , I am unaware but possibly an issue as discovered with K&N filters in some vehicles. A pic via your phone camera with the flash on is by far the best way to assess dust in your intake. Dusting WILL kill your turbo's ( engine out to replace ) and inevitably your engine as well around the same time. A compression test can reveal the PAINFUL truth about how much dust your engine has ingested. At between $26 - 36K for a new 1VD and turbo's, cleaning the intercooler etc etc ( + depending on whether you spend the money on upgrades as well ) to most people well and truly justifies replacing a substandard air box with something that actually does it's job. All the best - keep up the good work. Good to see quality content from right here in the goldfields! PS: Personally I would have a very good look at the FATZ Fabrication product.

    Another good video. I guess if doing your method, it is essential to make sure the new foam seal has good integrity where it butt joins (ie the two cut ends). Any small gap would likely introduce a bigger breach than the original. Would it be worth tapering the join of the foam rather than square profile? Or do you find the compression of the foam adequately ensures there is no gap at the join? Anyway, great job again...appreciate your effort in putting these together.

    • @XploringOz
      @XploringOz  4 роки тому +1

      For sure, you want to make sure the foam seals up nicely. This is another reason I've put het foam on the underside of the box. If for whatever reason there were to be a small gap, being on the lower side, it would just promote air being sucked into the dirty side of the box. Leaving the factory seal against the top of the airbox means that you have that consistent and flat seal around the entire box.

    SOS..same old story. Seal problem!!! Not Filter problem Your video is spot on, no doubt showing Toyota’s problem since years. Toyota has made over the years a minor improvement on the seal height. But it is in my opinion not enough. The seal design to improve would not be rocket sciences!! And would cost in production a few dollars more and every customer happy, but not Toyota and their dealer ship!!!! Commercial interest in selling expensive spare parts or engines. That is my opinion. Can’t be so difficult to design a seal with 2 higher lips in OEM spec. Sorry mate, I am not a designer and have no access to it. Just only in the same position as you and can’t justify the horrible expensive stainless steel aftermarket air box when a proper reusable rubber seal for 10.-AUD could solve such problem. Cheers mate and safe travels

    I think the filter on the old 1hz was designed better.
    It was cylindrical and had a cyclone separation effect on dust, forcing solids away from fines.
    The problem with 1vd is that square shape won't filter evenly l an next stop is your engine!

    • @XploringOz
      @XploringOz  3 роки тому

      For sure, cylindrical filters would theoretically have better filtration. This is another reason I run the Donaldson Cylinder Pre-filter on the top of the snorkel. This helps seperate heaps of the course material from the ultra fine dust, preventing unnecessary build up in the filter box.

    Gday mate is there anything you can do to determine if a car has been dusted, I’m in the market to buy a second hand 200 and very wary of this problem and the potential cost to replace engine. Or are we just rolling the dice and hoping the car we buy doesn’t or hasn’t suffer from this problem thanks for any advice.

    Nathan,
    Would it be better to apply the seal on the top side of the air filter. I understand the dust gets around that top seal, no benefit fitting seal around the underside of the air filter.

    • @XploringOz
      @XploringOz  3 роки тому

      You could, however I don't think it's the surface type of the material itself, more so the pressure between the two halves of the box.
      If you add an aftermarket seal on top, it has to be perfect without a single defect otherwise air will find it's way past.
      If you add it below, it will increase the tension on the sealing edge (by simply making it thicker) and where there will be a likely defect (at the join of the aftermarket seal) air will only get sucked into the lower side to then be filtered by the factory filter.
      I hope my logic makes some sort of sense.
      Cheers, Nathan.

    Its already being mentioned in the comments but I think the seal is only half the issue. Heat causing these flimsy plastic airboxes to warp (especially under heavy acceleration) is why your still getting dust even after improving the seal. Most people incuding myself are opting to use a uni-filter and they are extremely good with everyone getting similiar results, that being no dust. I also changed out the airbox as the cost of a new engine scares the hell out of me lol.
    Consider around a $1,000 for aibox & uni- filter or you can still run a genuine toyota filter. Compared this to 25 to 30k for a new engine?? I know it shouldn't be an issue but it clearly is for you and if you dont address it, it might cost you dearly.
    Still a great video mate and I enjoyed watching it. 👌👌

      Thanks Brett! I completely agree, these air boxes need a complete overhaul by Toyota, but with the impending release of the new 300 series, this is unlikely to happen now...

    Does the 200 series Sahara have one or two air conditioning compressors? Mine is only working on drivers side intermittently and strangely when I went over a bump it worked fully again for a short time on drivers side as well. • @XploringOz
      @XploringOz  3 роки тому

      Could work, potentially a little costly, but I guess it would depend on how you plan on using the vehicle. The Donaldson cyclonic pre-filter I'm using helps to seperate the larger dirt particles before entering the air box.

    Rubber seal is on the wrong side, have a look at where it gets in, seal should be on the top seal. The dust gets in thorough the lid of you look at all affected airboxes.

    • @XploringOz
      @XploringOz  4 роки тому +4

      Whether the seal is on the top or the bottom, the idea is the increase the compression of the seal, which this does. Further the reason I mount this on the bottom is, if for whatever reason there is a flaw in the seal, or a small gap where the seal starts/ends then the air will be sucked into the lower box, allowing it to be filtered prior to entering the intake. If there is a flaw in a top seal, this will allow air to be sucked directly into the clean side of the box and potentially make this problem much worse. Each to their own, but this works for me. Cheers, Nathan.

      @@XploringOz yes....but ...if you want to stop all dust top seal is the go, that way you are not just relying on the notoriously poor dust seal from the filter alone. All the dust I had was from through the top seal, in putting the seal on the lid you have a better chance of keeping the dust out. Look at what Project200 did and see how poor the filter seals are.
