I've had the most luck with propagating these when half burying them, lying on their sides. It'll take root at several points along the side then and is more stable. Super forgiving plant.
Thanks for posting this video. Mine has grown like crazy this summer and outgrowing it’s pot. I’m going to propagate mine and share with some of my students. Now I know what to do! 😊
This video was so informative. I just received my first life saver cactus in the mail and I have some broken parts and I thought I should be able to propagate this. Woo-hoo and thanks to you I will!
I was given a big pot of these by my neighbor. I was told it was dragon fruit then I did my own research and learned it was this plant. Looking forward to the flowers. 🙂
Great video! Thank you for sharing your knowledge on how to repot Huernias. I would love to watch a video on how to collect and germinate the seeds from Huernia seed pods. Thanks and best wishes!
Thank you for you sweet comment! I will have to look into how to obtain the seeds from this succulent but I know for sure if it does flower the flower is sterile. Let me know if you have anymore insight.🙂
Hi. I need your help, you seem to be an expert with these plants. I’ve tried to find out what is on my red dragon to no avail. I’ve got some black spots on my plant. I don’t think I can send you a pic on here. Do you have any thoughts?
Hello, I've had black spots on my red dragon stepalia before! It is from sun burn, that is what sunburn looks like on that particular species. It has black spots and white calloused markings around it. You can't change or reverse it. Just wait for new growth and propagate. I hope this helps. Let me know. Thanks for watching!
First, those are the hugest, most gorgeous Huernia I've ever seen! Clearly, you're the Huernia whisperer. I've got a quick question. I purchased a small Huernia just a few months ago and out popped a stem with two seedpods. A week later, they split open, releasing small seeds with white wispy tops. I'll eventually plant them, but wonder how deep they should go. Any ideas on this? Thanks!
@@thepottedsucculent4290 Thank you! I'm looking everywhere for that brand course sand you showed, but I can't find anyone that carries it. It looked like good stuff.
How often do you water them? I feel like I always lose a few stalks turned to mush even after watering 1-2 times a month and my soil is coarse, cactus soil.
I am just finding out the name of this plant/succulent my mom has them in her garden and they grow for her pretty well but I have never seen it bloom. I brought some cuttings with me in hopes that I can root them and grow them myself! I have them in water right now hoping the roots grow and remain healthy once I put them in soil. The roots come out pretty quickly 🙂
First time visiting your channel. Lots of helpful information. I was given 4 little cuttings of this plant should I plant them in one of the very little pots or a 4 inch pot? Thank you.
Thank you for watching! A 4 inch pot would work just watch your soil moisture. Just a little moisture after it completely dries while they establish roots then water through and only water when completely dry.
Hello, I use a potting soil from Lowes in a blue bag and add, coco peat, cinnamon, Epsom salt and osmocote plus outdoor and indoors smart release plant food. Hope this helps.
If a stem breaks off can you just plant it back in the pot? I had a long one break and don't want to just throw it away. Thank you for your video, very informative
Thank you for the video! I have a small question: is it ok to grow lifesaver plants and starfish plants in one pot? Or should they be separated? Thank you!
Thank you for your question. There are so many variables to keep in mind. These succulents love bright light. During cooler weather they will go dormant so no more blooms for now. With very bright light I find they spread out with new growth and dont stretch as much.
Thank you for your question. Repotting is done when the plant reproduces offsets. This succulent loves to be in a crowded pot, enough soil to where when you water dries out in about 2 days.
Yours grows so fast! Beautiful 😍

Your very welcome! Thank you for watching. I have triple the amount I did last summer, they do grow like crazy in the right environment.

Wow! Your life-saver plants look amazing. Thank you for this video. I just got a life-saver plant, look forward to many offspring from it.
Your welcome! Thank you for watching. You will have plenty in no time if you propagate! 🙂
Thank you for sharing, I enjoyed watching. I just bought my first of this plant. I can’t wait to see it bloom!
Thank you so much for watching! It is soo beautiful when it blooms! I have plenty of blooms right now, I love them.
Hi, I am from Indonesia. Just bought Lifesaver Plant today... And I am enjoying your video so much

So beautiful healthy plants 🎉 nice sharing

I just did some research and it took me awhile to find it. Really cool plant and flowers. My coworkers mom called them donkey tails.
I just purchased my second one it's one of my favorites.
I love this plant and have several of them!

Thank you so much for watching! I would plant those an inch down in the soil. Good luck and I hope that helps,

I was watching your video because mine tends to flop over. They don’t stand up. I feel like it needs more water, but afraid of over water.
Try bottom watering. The succulent drinks what it needs. Put a container of water on the bottom and leave until the top of the dirt is wet.
Type,of soil,i potted them in would be helpful for me a novice at this.
How often do you water them? I feel like I always lose a few stalks turned to mush even after watering 1-2 times a month and my soil is coarse, cactus soil.

@@thepottedsucculent4290 Thank you for taking the time to answer my question.
@@thepottedsucculent4290 Is there a certain kind of fertilizer for this plant or other succulents?
Can you cut them if they get to long? And regrow the cutting?
What's in the potting mix your using and the ratios of each? Do you mix your own or buy it?
Hello, I use a potting soil from Lowes in a blue bag and add, coco peat, cinnamon, Epsom salt and osmocote plus outdoor and indoors smart release plant food. Hope this helps.
I don’t have one, would you like to swap a plant????
If a stem breaks off can you just plant it back in the pot? I had a long one break and don't want to just throw it away. Thank you for your video, very informative
You can definitely do that! Dry the end for a day or two then plant in succulent soil. Just try to remember stick the broken end in the soil.
Also, thank you for watching!
@@thepottedsucculent4290 ok great, thank you so much!! 🙂🌱🌵

I have a small question: is it ok to grow lifesaver plants and starfish plants in one pot? Or should they be separated? Thank you!
Cassie, thank you for watching! Yes you can definitely combine stapelia varieties in one pot! These plants will look beautiful together!
So you dont have to let them callus when using the rooting powder?
No you don't, just make sure you do not water until the succulent produces roots...about a week or two. Thank you for your question!
I have one stem. The bottom is watery and shriveled. Is there any way to save it?
Hello, I would cut above the watery part and leave it out to dry the end, then repot and only water when roots appear.
my plant has grown very long, but no blooms. How do I keep them short?
Thank you for your question. There are so many variables to keep in mind. These succulents love bright light. During cooler weather they will go dormant so no more blooms for now. With very bright light I find they spread out with new growth and dont stretch as much.
You plants and right away you don't let them dry out
When would u repot that?
Thank you for your question. Repotting is done when the plant reproduces offsets. This succulent loves to be in a crowded pot, enough soil to where when you water dries out in about 2 days.
