Doctor Who: Wild Blue Yonder - Russell T Davis Just Can't Get Over Himself!!

  • The second of the three David Tennant is certainly a lot better than the first episode. But Russell T Davis can't get over himself and HAS to insert his ideological politics into every aspect. Pulling you out of show when you want to immerse yourself in it.

You are obviously a bigot that doesn't understand diversity. Diversity isn't about willy nilly race-swapping people. It is about willy nilly race-swapping white people.
The most diverse photoshoot of the decade consisted of 10 black women and nobody else.
Diversity means less white people and more black people. Asians don't count for diversity points because asians are white-adjecent.
So it would be blasphemy to the Gods of Woke to ever race swap a black character, even if it is for another person of color. Wokeness is racism and sexism with corporate speak, that is why it confuses so many. But it is the same people who will say shit like "Due to our company policy we have decided to give you the freedom to seek better employment." When they mean "We're going broke, so you're fired." 😂

I can't get over the hypocrisy of RTD and his team. They introduce an opnely gay, black Doctor but feel the need to do 3 Tennant episodes to build the audience back up for him. They also have so little faith in Ncuti working that they come up with this Bi regeneration idea to reassure fans that the "real" Doctor is still out there if/when the ratings for Ncuti fall off a cliff. They also hammer home the importance of not assuming gender or pronouns in the same episode that has wheelchair lady saying "evening BOYS" and every subsequent episode goes back to assuming everyone's pronouns. They call out Davros for being a negative stereotype only to have a wheelchair bound UNIT advisor that is more cliched than Davros ever was. They criticise the Doctor for being a useless Male presenting Time Lord then hype him up when they realise they can make him gay. They criticise racism but happily race swap a real life historical person for the sake of progressivism. Utter hypocrisy.

Joan Redfern(Human Nature & The Family of Blood)
Queen Elizabeth(The Day of the Doctor)
    River Song(Seasons 4 through 9)
Yeah interesting how he just keeps falling for women despite "being gay". Hell in Human Nature and Family of Blood he sealed all his memories and he still fell for a woman. Meanwhile despite good old Captain Jack being super handsome and willing to screw just about anything with a pulse never did the "totally gay" doctor start any kind of romantic relationship with him. So strange almost like this is all BS to force an agenda.

The writing isn't any different than it was in Chibnal's era. Bringing Tennant back wasn't going to fix it. We already knew they were going right back to "diversity" when his 3 specials were over. Doctor Who was on the slide with more and more woke creeping in over Capaldi's era, and it was stone cold dead with the Timeless child. The pandering and messaging has just become so comically over the top now it's a parody of a parody, it doesn't signal the death of the series, everything after the Timeless Child has only thrown dirt on the coffin.

    • @lancebaylis3169

They haven't even waited until Tennant's specials are over. Right out of gate, things have been "business as usual, nothing to see here". Nobody has reflected on The Timeless Child, nobody has taken stock of how utterly the Dr Who brand has been broken open, and nobody in charge seems interested in making the changes needed to win back the viewers.
But no, the next Doctor's eras failures will be laid at the feet of ist and phobe viewers, and not because of the poor creative choices of those in charge of Doctor Who.

The problem is, Chibs was using the gender and race thing as a sword and shield against the folk who would call out his lack of talent as a writer. He was only capable of the bare minimum crap, queer baiting and dissing men. RTD is a much greater threat to the show as he has no fear of pushing these messages as fas as they will go. He will happily make a gay Doctor the focus of episodes with him falling in love and getting physical with other men in upcoming episodes. He will have no problem in dressing Ncuti in a tartan skirt (not a kilt) just to say that gender bending is fine. He is willing to do all this crap that Chibs only ever touched on, then use a sledgehammer approach to preach it.

Anyways, Doctor Who has always been woke, progressive what ever you want to call it. Az probably really enjoyed the episodes behind the scenes, hard not to if your a die hard Doctor Who fan which Az is and if you actually watch the specials, the 'wokeness' is not that distracting and they are actually very entertaining specials to watch and with updated special FX Doctor Who is finally becoming fully realised. I personally don't feel spat in the face because I already know the show has always been progressive, woke what ever you want to call it and what Doctor Who deservers is support because its not just any old show, its TV history in the making as it will be around long after when you and I are dead and gone, despite the delusion of people who think it will be cancelled anytime soon. Its also funny because i know the exact point in time in which every studio must have decided that they need to include a gay character in every show because it happens at the same point in every long running series, it is quite funny. A lot of the times they never even bothered to make a new character, they just outright swapped the sexual orientation of pre-existing ones regardless of how stupid that is when it comes to the narrative of "its not a choice". An example of this was Willow in Buffy the vampire slayer. Where she was sexually attracted to Xander for several seasons, then had a long term relationship with Oz and then out of nowhere they were like oh shes gay now, even though that is not how that works. That example is before the time period i mentioned but its still a funny example. So, he's always been upfront about it. He just has much more freedom now, and a BBC who are happier to give him that freedom rather than gatekeeping one of their prestige programs and maintain Dr Who's integrity.
While most of us are probably fine with gay representation, done sympathetically as Davies did during his first run. Where things have really changed now is that the lead character isn't "off-limits" to them anymore. They've already run him through the wringer of gender politics and race politics, so messing around with his sexuality is pretty much the next and only place left to go.
People like Gary (Nerdrotic) prophesized this would happen when they were ok with casting a girl as the Doctor, and further prophesized that Russell T Davies coming back wasn't the saviour on a horse many interpreted him to be. RTD is exactly the kind of guy the BBC want. It was always intended to be historically educational, that was one of the main focuses of the show back in 1963. As a kid in the 80s and 90s watching the old stories, it really did its job - I would watch stories about The Aztects, The Romans, The Highlanders and then read more about that time period. Loved reading about Doc Holliday after The Gunfighters. The show should always be pretty much historically accurate as a starting point then the fictional adventure should be added to that. They're literally starting off by not only lying to the audience but treating the whole thing as a fictional character and a joke skit that means nothing. It is the exact opposite of education as it creates a generation who think people like Newton are just characters for entertainment.

but there is one other setup this start does apart from shoving a poc newton in our faces for no reason: to make the doctor gay or at least bi. this happens with his short conversation with donna, who mentions how hot he was and the doctor agrees. she even mentioned "it was always under the surface". now I invite you to rewatch all episodes of the past, who had donna as a companion. then tell me, where the doctor had any gay atributes showing through. but I save you the time: there are none. first donna thinks he wants to molest her in his box, later he regulary mentions rose and how he misses her. he never has gay intentions.

The Doctor Who production team have one job: create an entertaining family sci-fi adventure series. They seem to have forgotten that simple objective. Classic Doctor Who had social messages within its storytelling, of course it did. But it was written by good writers (remember those?) who would subtly weave allegory into their story for the audience to discover - or not, that was left up to the individual. Take the story at face value or read more into it, that was your choice as the viewer. Gone are the days of layered story telling. These days you must be beaten over the head with the message until you submit. And even if you’re already an ally to the cause, you still get beaten with it.

    • @demaupin

Exactly. And if you chose to read more into them, there were multiple possible perspectives and conclusions. They encouraged you to think, rather than _telling you what_ you should think. Now it doesn't just tell the audience what to think; it yells at them and harangues them with passive aggressive authoritarian diktats. Thoroughly unpleasant.

Yeah was it in an interview somewhere that Russel T Davies described this as more adult themed. Now maybe it's because my standards for storytelling hasn't fallen below the ocean but that didn't really come across to me at all. Even as a child I don't think I would have been afraid of this EP. A shapeshifter who has your memories has been done many times in fiction and many of them are utterly terrifying yet I didn't get that here. I don't know maybe it's because I've seen how other writers have done this concept that I've become immune to the horror of it.
Yeah mentioning the timeless children was an utter mistake that I groaned watching that part. Overall I would say this an average episode to me.

The show should have ended with Smith's Doctor. Giving the Doctor first 13 more regenerations, and now basically unlimited lives, was the first major step towards crapping on the original canon. And it's made the Doctor basically invincible now since he can regenerate after any death. There are no more stakes. And all we have left is a husk of a show being used to brainwash people into accepting certain ideologies.

    • @eerielamp

It's a good thing that Whittaker was the 13th 😊 everything after it is canonically invalid.
Maybe if/when it's rebotted 15-20 years from after its final breath this run, they have the perfect opportunity to paint everything (maybe even Whittakers doctor herself) as a fever dream(s) the doctor had, and the last canonical doctor is the usual doctor. And after the actual final 13th doctor, maybe there's a way to return the granddaughter to be the forerunner of the show?

This episode seemed like a copy of the episode "Listen" when Peter Capaldi's Doctor goes to the end of time when everyone is dead but there is the perfect hider creature that they never see. Similarities being that it is the end of time in Listen and similarly the end of the universe in this episode. They have the same knocking mechanic as well. The enemy has an unknown form in Listen, you don't see the enemy, and in this episode the enemy/enemies doesn't really have a form of its own; it just copies.
I don't know if anyone else had this vide but for me it was just a rework of Listen. I think that's why it felt like Dr. Who again, well, with distracting added BS.
