This second part takes us to another level of madness and magnificence in the purest Pink Floyd style.
There are hundreds of reactions on YT to this album, especially to Comfortably Nub, but yours far outsmarts them all.
You bring so much to this amazing album with your remarkable ability to discern the smallest details of instrumentalization or special effects and to express with passion all the contradictory feelings that this music gives us.
With you, I rediscover albums that I thought I knew by heart. You are brilliant and unique 💫

I like how the album ends with a voice saying "Isn't this where..." over the clarinets on "Outside the wall", and the album begins with the same voice continuing the sentence with, "where we came in?" over the same clarinet tune at the start of "In the flesh?". I believe the idea was to suggest that the whole process of building and then knocking down The Wall was cyclical and 'Pink' is doomed to continue this.

In the movie the children are picking up the bricks from the rubble for their own walls I suppose, so it's generational fundamentally. I suppose outside the wall is where he was as a child before he built the wall, there with the other children figuring out which bricks they like best. But now He knows that there was not a door in His wall. So it's like His adult life was just a dream, and He's instantly teleported back to pre-wall conditions. As an additional layer to the cyclical nature of self deception.

Album was meant to be listened to from beginning to end then again and again. I did that almost every night in 9th grade back in 1988. I heard this album minimum 3 times a day for almost 3 years straight. This thing speaks to me.

The Wall is one of those albums that I would call a "work". Pink Floyd have always worked towards this with their previous albums. The film is also part of it. The combination of image and sound was already the declared goal of the band under Syd Barrett.

Now you need to watch the movie.
ETA: The album is a full circle. if you listen very carefully, you hear this at the end, "Isn't this wh-..." The very beginning of the album has the same voice over the same music saying, "where we came in?" So once he tears down the wall, he starts building a new one.
ETA 2: The piano melody you played in Hey You is also the vocal melody from Another Brick in the Wall Part 2 verses.

The four note motif you play during Hey You runs throughout the album. It kinda symbolizes the wall itself. In the context of that solo, that riff plays, strong and dominant, while the guitar solo wails and screams higher and more desperate as if trying to climb above the wall and escape.

I could probably write a book on Comfortably Numb, but I'll just highlight this:
The first solo (after the first chorus) is meant to represent the peak of being high.
The extended ending solo is the crash and burn with the protagonist spiraling further into the madness that carries through the rest of the album.

Dame Vera Margaret Lynn CH DBE OStJ (née Welch; 20 March 1917 - 18 June 2020 aged 103) was an English singer and entertainer whose musical recordings and performances were very popular during the Second World War. She is honorifically known as the "Forces' Sweetheart", having given outdoor concerts for the troops in Egypt, India and Burma during the war as part of the Entertainments National Service Association (ENSA). The songs most associated with her include "We'll Meet Again", "(There'll Be Bluebirds Over) The White Cliffs of Dover", "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square" and "There'll Always Be an England".
In 2009, at the age of 92, she became the oldest living artist to top the UK Albums Chart with the compilation album We'll Meet Again: The Very Best of Vera Lynn.

Great reaction as always. Others will post the meanings, but also the Wikipedia entry for The Wall has a nice plot summary that explains all the songs.
There was a singer named Vera Lynn in the 40s who had a famous song "We'll Meet Again." I love the song Vera, there's so much despair in Waters voice as he battles his adult demons & he pines for his simpler childhood.
Another note…. Worms are a recurring theme in the whole album…. They represent decay. “Worms ate into his brain” = mental decay.
Also, I meant to post this on the reaction to side 1 & 2... I loved how you laughed both times you heard the line "Mother will they try to break my balls." I've been listening to that song forever and still snicker at that line because it’s so unexpected lol.

To expand a bit and account for the squeaking sound, Crystal’s right, it’s the sound of the breaks of a locomotive; it represents “the boys” (british soldiers) in the railroad platform leaving for the war. Vera Lynn was honorifically known as the "Forces' Sweetheart", having given outdoor concerts for british troops in Egypt, India and Burma during the war as part of the Entertainments National Service Association (ENSA).

Hi Crystal! Wow, what to say after such greatness...great observation on the downward phrases throughout side three, it's an interesting technique Floyd used to represent Pink's mental descent. I could tell from your expressions on first listen that side three is the most emotional part of the entire album. The incorporation of the strings and Gilmour's first guitar solo on Comfortably Numb slays me every time. Also, awesome Beach Boy name-check on those side four vocals. Bruce Johnston, a Beach Boy, sings throughout that side. Finally, I just have to say there really had never been anything like The Wall when it was released. I was 14 at the time...you can only imagine how awe inspiring it all was. Thanks for taking me back to all that with your reaction. Crystal, your'e beautiful in so many ways, cheers!

Like a lot of others in here, I also highly recommend watching the movie of "Pink Floyd: The Wall" . It definitely adds some visual context to the meaning of the songs on the album. It also features two songs that are not on the album: One is called "When The Tigers Broke Free", which is another orchestra-backed song describing the atmosphere of war that Pink's father was in; and the other is a slightly longer alternate version of "Empty Spaces" (which is not in the film) called " What Shall We Do Now? ". The cast is interesting, in that Pink is played by Sir Bob Geldof, who would be the main organizer of Live Aid three years after this film; and his manager is played by Bob Hoskins, who played Eddie Valiant in "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?"
Recommend watching it at midnight, as it is a true midnight cult movie. Has animations in it that will blow your mind, crazy and scary visuals, and just an overall unique experience you'll ever have without taking any drugs.
The live concert that Pink Floyd out on during their 1980 world tour for this album (which comprised of only three cities [London, New York and Los Angeles] because of the intricate staging that had to be done) is an experience itself. If you have time to check it out, go on YT and do a search for "[NEW SOURCE] Pink Floyd The Wall Live At Nassau 02/27/80" and you'll get a bootleg copy of footage of the whole concert taken at one of the Nassau Colosseum shows. That will blow your mind.

    Is There Anybody Out There:
At this point in the live stage performance, the band is literally separated from the audience by the wall they built across the stage in the first half.
So the singer is literally calling out to the audience on the other side: IS THERE ANYBODY OUT THERE?

There must have been a door there in the wall...when I came in...... This one lyric encapsulates the whole process of the human mind whilst going through a long-term crisis and mental distress. We are trying to find a way out of the desperate position our mind is in at that time. It is the perfect recuperation album that brings me out of any mental crisis I suffer throughout my life. The thing is, is that mental crisis can sometimes repeat for those of a certain disposition, hence why we have the end statement that leads us once again into the opening of the album. I have had to turn to this album on quite a few periods of my life, where I will listen to it about 10 times before feeling temporarily healed. It is one of the finest compositions I have ever heard. Your reaction to it was wonderful to witness, it took me back to my first time when my sisters first introduced me to this absolute masterpiece. Well done and I hope you feel somewhat healed. Personally I go back & forth between Animals & the live version of the Wall as my favorite. But WYWH & Dark Side are so close to being my favorite as well.
Unfortunately, you've now covered all of their best work: their big 4 70s albums: Dark Side, WYWH, Animals & The Wall. & their first album Piper, which I'm so glad you started with, I would put as my number 5. Their albums in between Piper & Dark Side are pretty experimental, & they are still finding their footing, warming up for what was to come, After The Wall the band began to fracture an d the 4 band members were never all together again (except for a one off performance at Live 8 in 2005) so what we got were a bunch of solo albums (some under their own names, & some under the Pink Floyd name) and only a couple more where just 2 or 3 of the band members were present with some extra outside collaborators helping out. Though, there were still some great individual songs and glimpses of brilliance here & there, nothing they ever did apart came close to those big 4 70s albums where all 4 members were working together. Still I do quite like a couple of the solo albums like Rick Wright's "Wet Dream" & Nick Mason's "Fictitious Sports". Roger Waters who was the main songwriter & band leader has a few pretty good solo albums like : "Amused To Death", "The Pros & Cons Of Hitchhiking", & more recently "Is This The Life We Really Want". The first self titled David Gilmour solo album was also pretty good.

The Trial is the when the character reaches his breaking point and loses his mind completely, and has to face his demons. From his smothering mother, his neglected ex-wife, his failures, and at the end, the veredict of the judge.

In considering The Wall, it was so interesting to me how so little of the analysis concerns the actual lyrics... Particularly since the viewing of the movie will provide much of that missing analysis, and may change your mind Crystal about some of the emotional intent of the instrumentation/vocals, from words such as "Enchanting..." and "Romantic" to for example, "Fascistic" and "Depressing"!
The genius of Roger Waters is everywhere on this lp, and includes the high vocalizations on the song Hey You.

Funny you should say that: Roger Waters originally intended to have the actual Beach Boys band do a lot of those backing harmonies on the album, but scheduling conflicts prevented the while group from doing it. In the end Bruce Johnston (The replacement for Brian Wilson on bass and keyboard whenever the band toured in the late 60s through the 80s) was the only member who was able to be on the album. (Fun Fact: Toni Tenille of Captain & Tenille ["Love Will Keep Us Together"] fame was another backing vocalist on this album.)

Saw Roger Waters & band perform The Wall in fall of 2010 - obviously it was not Pink Floyd - but his band was top notch as you'd expect - lead guitarist Dave Kilminster's work was uncanny - he sounded more like David Gilmour than Gilmour does. The original shows by PF back in 1980 - 81 were considered technological marvels for rock concerts of that era - way ahead of it's time - and by 2010 the tech available for Roger to fully realize his vision for the concept was nothing short of astonishing - highly recommend seeing the film from the tour if you never have.

For me, the album is about the wounds (school, family, relationships, etc.) that make us want to build a wall around our hearts and become "comfortably numb." In doing so, we don't only cut ourselves off from others, but we cut ourselves off from our own humanity, and we become monsters. The record starts with the protagonist as a child, afraid of Nazi bombs. "Look mummy, there's an airplane up in the sky!" Near the end, completely lost, Pink turns into a Hitler want-a-be. Roger Waters felt that happening to him as Pink Floyd became more rich and famous, and he became more isolated and self-centered. The point is to "Tear Down The Wall!" Great reaction, as always, Crystal

Roger Waters has said that The Wall is made of bricks of fear. All of the different emotional events mentioned, both building The Wall in Act 1 and the fascist concert in Act 2, come from a place of fear. To tear down The Wall is to let go of fear.

    • @cloudlesseveryday947
      @cloudlesseveryday947 2 роки тому +1

Definitely. The biggest threat to any person is the building of their own fears that come from our processing of events, particularly traumatic events at all stages of our lives. Most significantly from our childhood, when we are meant to feel our most safe. Letting go of that fear is the biggest challenge of all and sometimes we have to put our most powerful emotions on trial honestly to break that fear down. Yet, the human mind is never safe from relapse, hence why the album suggests we may once again get sucked in to a new wave of fears that bring back the old ones... serious stuff.

Crazy album! Whew! A real rock opera! I hope you do the first rock opera, "Tommy" (1969) by The Who. And after that, their second rock opera, "Quadrophenia" (1973). They're both beautiful, exciting, and have totally different sounds and approaches. "Tommy" is what made everyone start doing "rock operas", and the album has a really beautiful, unusual production sound, very one-of-a-kind. If you see the album cover, it SOUNDS like the album cover. And "Quadrophenia" is also beautiful, it's like being in the ocean during a rainstorm. Very passionate. The Who are my second favorite band after The Beatles and have A LOT of super classic albums: "Who's Next" (1971) is as iconic as these Floyd and Zeppelin albums. "The Who Sell Out" (1967) is an incredible concept album that is set up as if it was a radio show! A dazzling album! They are the most spectacular live band ever in rock. There's a fantastic documentary about them called "The Kids Are Alright" that will have you jumping all over the room, air guitaring and air-drumming. They are a real special band, and super influential. If I had to say start with one, I'd say "Who's Next", every song is classic, most are still played on "classic rock" radio. Amazing drums, amazing bass playing, amazing songwriting, passionate singing. You'll LOVE 'em. And I love YOU! This was great revisiting this album with you! It's always a pleasure to see and hear your reactions and analysis to great music! You haven't disappointed and I don't think you could if you tried. 😆. 💙🎸🎹
Did you notice how the guitar solo in Hey You mimics the melody to Another Brick in the Wall? It took me years to notice it and it was right there in front of me all along. You can hear that refrain again in "Waiting for the Worms" and again in the song "The Trial". First by orchestra then by heavy rock.
The song "Outside the Wall" always gets me emotional. Not only the melody (by the way, in the live version, instead of spoken lyrics, it was sung by a few people together among the rubble of bricks along with mandolin, accordion, clarinet, acoustic guitar and tambourine), but also the lyrics:
All alone, or in two, the ones who really love you, gather together outside the wall
Some hand in hand, some gather together in bands, the bleeding hearts and artists make their stand
And when they've given you their all, some stagger and fall, after all it's not easy, bangin' your heart against some mad bugger's wall
Another notable difference between the studio and live versions is the song "Empty Spaces". It was replaced with a song called "What Shall We Do Now?". It begins with the same melody but with slightly different lyrics and then breaks into a heavier rock style.
Oddly, in the lyrics in the sleeve for the cd, it includes the lyrics to both, even though "What Shall We Do Now" isn't on the studio recording. I would guess it was intended to be but was cut, along with an extra verse in "The Show Must Go On", cut from the studio version but added to the live ones along with some extra solos. If you ever want to hear a live recording of The Wall, it took them a while, but in 2000 they put out "Is There Anybody Out There? The Wall Live 1980-81".
Oh, hey, the metallic screech on Vera was a train stopping. You'll see in the movie adaption if you watch it.
If you follow the album versions of "Outside the Wall" with the opener "In the Flesh?", you'll hear a hidden message: "I think this is where - we came in"
At the time there was an infatuation with the idea that there were backwards/hidden messages in rock songs, so they put one in on "Empty Spaces". If played backwards, a voice (presumably Roger's) says "Congratulations. You’ve just discovered the secret message. Please send your answer to Old Pink, care of the funny farm, Chalfont” then a voice (presumably from the control room) says “Roger! Carolyne is on the phone!”.

It’s not that you have to watch the film, but it’s a good film and reinforces the thing that I always try to stress on people before they listen to The Wall is that it is not just a collection of songs but rather a literal narrative, (thus the songs bleeding into eachother.) I do love the film and it, in some instances, paints a clearer image than the lyrics alone do.

The last line was "isn't this where".. the first line of the album is "we came in"

We want to experience you listening to an album we love, but only if you experience it exactly how we think you should experience it and have an encyclopedic, studied knowledge of every nuance of an album. Oh, and it must be a first listen. 😀
Keep up the good work! You are one of the best music reactors on UA-cam. Keep bringing your knowledge of music and the ready access to your emotions to your reactions.

Outside The Wall is playing briefly before In The Flesh on Side One, making the entire album a constant loop

Roger Waters (main songwriter & band leader) has still been carrying the Pink Floyd torch for the last couple of decades with his solo tours still happening every couple of years. He puts on some big extravagant stage shows, like Pink Floyd used to do. He's also performed the entire Wall live many times as well and Dark Side Of The Moon. Sadly the tour happening this year and next might just be his last before he retires. I highly recommend catching it if you can.
His live performances are def worth checking out. Some stand out performances:

Sadly he doesn’t really do much “live”, his band play live, he lip syncs to pre recorded vocals. Think the only time his mic is actually turned on is for between song political lectures. He certainly sells a live show, I wouldn’t say that’s what he delivers though.

Hi Crystal, after you digested all of that, I recommend you also look at the movie. Gerald Scarfe's imagery together with the music is mesmerizing and powerful. It also has a few interesting variations that are not on the album, like "The tigers broke free" which I always loved.

I really appreciate the depth of thought you put into this reaction, taking time to think through as many elements as possible in your analysis! There are a lot of comments, so maybe someone said this already, but Roger Waters (bass) and David Gilmour (guitar) share lead vocal duty on this album (and others, along with keyboardist Richard Wright, though not, to my knowledge, on The Wall). Waters' voice is the more frenetic/wobbly (as it were) voice, and Gilmour's is the more steady/mellow. Others have suggested the movie, and I won't disagree, although parts of it are hard to watch, for me at least. I've been following your analysis videos for a while and want to thank you for taking the time to do this! Peace!

The Movie is Incredible, and for someone as Musically Inspired, and Adept, as You are, it's a must see. The visuals are so well choreographed with the soundtrack, very unique Animation,
and overall imagery. Roger Waters Father died in WW2, the movie has a commemorative song for Him. I got the movie when it was first released on VHS, so I have watched it
many times with many people. We are all guilty of building walls for protection, better to be free and take it as it comes, with the faith that what doesn't kill you only makes you stronger.😊
