    A popular knowledgeable youtuber "Beato" says those two minutes of "The End" contains everything magical that defined the whole Beatle experience. Great lyric to finish on , a theme of" love and positiveness" (Abbey Road was the last album they played together"), the musicianship - freestyling in seamless transition one to the other, the harmonies, Ringo's drumming, the melody and the orchestration. Brings a tear to the eyes.

    I believe Ringo's only Beatle drum solo was in 'The End'. You have to listen to side 2, starting at 'You Never Give Me Your Money' til the end, without pause.

  • @alistair5485
    @alistair5485 3 роки тому +20

    I love your reactions, but you seem to have missed the fact that everything on side 2 from 'You never give me your money' through to 'The end' is a medley.
    The Beatles had a bunch of unfinished songs, rather than finishing them they decided to mix them all together into 1 big epic piece. They are not really meant to stand alone.
    So try listening to them without pausing for the intended effect!

    • @analogblues
      @analogblues 3 роки тому +8

      Agreed - I'm not sure she understood that. Although, it's an easy thing to miss if you don't realize this structure in advance. Given that she'll listen to this in its entirety later, I think she'll catch on pretty quickly.

  • @bjornerikroth
    @bjornerikroth 3 роки тому +8

    Even though it probably wasn't meant, there is a heavy symbolism you can read into to the finish of the medley, the final piece of music on the final Beatles album (almost): "Carry that weight" - they would indeed have to carry the weight of having been part of the biggest band for the rest of their lives. And then... "The end". A final guitar battle between them, a showpiece for Ringo, and then it's all over. Almost.

    • @papercup2517
      @papercup2517 3 роки тому +1

      I get that feeling too, of a kind of elegy for the band's passing; a marking of that moment in history - including You Never Give Me Your Money, reflecting the ghastliness of the Allan Klein management debacle, Golden Slumbers and The End.
      Although it's been argued the Beatles never realised this would be their final recorded album (there was some talk among them of 'the next album', that never materialised) and as a culmination of several years of a kind of spiritual exhaustion and different directions creating widening divisions between the four of them, the end of the band as a unit - I can't help but think McCartney knew in his heart the 'end was nigh', when he wrote lines like 'Once there was a way, to get back homewards; once there was a way, to get back home... Oh, sleep pretty darling, do not cry... and I will sing a lull-abye-ee....
      [My apologies for that l-o-n-n-g-g sentence, I couldn't seem to break it down so I hope it makes some sense!]

  • @MrDiddyDee
    @MrDiddyDee 3 роки тому +7

    The synth sounds on 'Here comes the sun' were a very early Moog synthesiser which had teething problems, if they wanted a sustained note it just wouldn't hold it's pitch and would drop down, a happy accident that they liked and then incorporated into the track. 'Sun King' was inspired by Fleetwood Mac's hit instrumental 'Albatross', which had a similar hypnotic feel. The Latino lyrics were a bit of Lennon's nonsense style, (like 'Come together' it's mostly gobbledegook), it's just interesting sounds and wordplay. In 'Polythene Pam' John uses his exaggerated Liverpool 'Scouse' accent, he was actually the least working class of the Beatles and adopted a heavier accent for effect a lot of the time. 'Here comes the sun' and 'You never give me your money' both reflect their respective writers feelings over aspects of their Apple Records company, and their growing frustrations with business issues. Harrison skipped one of those meetings to escape to his friend, Eric Clapton's, idyllic house and grounds. During an uncommonly bright early spring day, he was inspired and looking forward to the time when he was no longer shackled by being a Beatle. 'Because' is likely inspired by Beethoven, and features their producer, George Martin, playing the electric harpsicord. It took a lot of effort for Martin, as he considered himself not that great a player, but needed to keep tightly in sync with Lennon's even guitar picking. The Side 2 medley was really a selection of half finished ideas pooled together, tying up loose ends. Some no more than a verse or two, which in an alternative universe may easily have remained fragments of demos never to be officially heard, or may have been worked up into full songs in their own right. In reality The Beatles rarely had anything left over that didn't eventually get released as a polished track, albeit most surfacing on their subsequent solo releases.

      And the guitar riff she highlights on "Come Together" is a bass guitar riff created by Paul. The song is referred to as "by John Lennon" by Wikipedia etc. but it's very definitely a Lennon & McCartney song -- the bass riff is half the power of it, as she suggests. He was the one who rang George Martin, their producer, and asked if they could all get together one more time and make a really good album to end their career on. George said he'd agree, but only if they promised not to argue among themselves as they had done earlier, whilst filming "Let It Be". Paul said "Okay", and persuaded the others to make the album. "You Never Give Me Your Money" was about Paul's frustrations with their manager Allen Klein and the state of the Beatles business affairs. Here's Paul on the song:
    "This was me directly lambasting Allen Klein’s attitude to us: no money, just funny paper, all promises and it never works out. It’s basically a song about no faith in the person, that found its way into the medley on Abbey Road. John saw the humour in it."
    And here is George Harrison's similar statement:
    " ’Funny paper’ - that’s what we get. We get bits of paper saying how much is earned and what this is and that is, but we never actually get it in pounds, shilling and pence. We’ve all got a big house and a car and an office, but to actually get the money we’ve earned seems impossible."

    'Because' is based on the chords of the first movement of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata. Play it and you'll hear.
    And what is so amazing is how primitive (by today's standards) the recording process was in 1969. There were only 4 tracks available on the tape so they often had to do vocals live and then mix them onto a track together with an instrument to free up a track for overdubs. But the sound world they were able to create with such lmited technical resources is truly incredible.

The song ‘The End’ was the final time all 4 ever recorded as a team, many say it was ‘I Me Mine’ but John had left by the point that they recorded that song, for me personally ‘The End’ is THE perfect song to end their collaboration as a complete group because it’s both an awesome track but also has this finality and completeness to it

    By the way, I recall that Frank Sinatra (world class crooner) was quoted as saying that "Something" was the most beautiful or touching love song he heard in the past 20 years at that point, which was saying something coming from him. He mistakenly attributed it to Lennon/McCartney instead of Harrison though. Anyway people of his generation weren't usually as gracious or complimentary about music from the Beatles' generation, either. They disliked "the British invasion" almost as much as I've disliked rap music. So it was a cool and notable compliment, which most people agree with. I rank Here, There and Everywhere up there too, (as a happy one) but Something (as a heart-felt one) will probably be the one (of so many Beatles love songs) that will endure for 200 years.

    As for George Harrison's jacket: There was a rumour in that time that Paul was dead and was replaced by Billy Shears (remember Sgt.Peppers?). So the picture at the backcover gave hints of the situation. John was wearing white as the doctor, Ringo black as a priest, Paul was walking barefoot as the deceased and George wore jeans pants and jacket as the grave digger.

    Pink Floyd has always been my favourite band, but after hearing Abbey Road, I realised there'd be no Pink Floyd like we know it without this album. Mind blown. This is a significantly great album. I listened to the Beatles from the first album and worked my way up to Abbey Road, which I knew was legendary. What an experience it was to listen to it for the first time. This happened spring 2022.

    Hello Shannon! Your observation for "Because" was very astute; it was inspired by a piece from the Romantic Era. Yoko was playing Beethoven's, "Moonlight Sonata," I believe, and John asked her to play it backwards, and thus, the inspiration for "Because" began.

    After AR, the four went their separate ways, which had been in the offing for awhile. (They recorded their last annual Christmas fan-club record in the fall of 1969.) George, Paul, and Ringo got together in January 1970 to record George's "I Me Mine", without Lennon (who later said that he would have participated if he'd known about the session).

    This was the end of the Beatles! This is how they said Goodbye!!! And in the End,,, each one took a lead to say goodbye! First Ringo then amazing leads by Paul, John, George, Paul, John, George (maybe not in that order) and the final lead by George. This is their swan song! And their last message as a collective group "And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make. And then they were gone, except for a delayed release of Let It Be. ABBY Road remains one of my all time favorite albums of all time.

    "Come Together"-inspired by (some might say, "nicked") Chuck Berry's "You Can't Catch Me", one of my favorite tracks. The Beatles producer, George Martin, always wanted to open their albums with what he called "potboilers": uptempo rockers. And, they usually closed their albums with rockers, too. The early Beatles albums up to "Rubber Soul", with the exception of "A Hard Day's Night", conclude with rocking covers ("Twist And Shout", "Money", "Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby", "Dizzy Miss Lizzie"). Only "A Hard Day's Night" lacks a cover song and one to conclude the album. I've always wondered what song they could have picked.
    "Something"-classic. This is George Harrison truly becoming Lennon and McCartney's equal. Everything about this song is just lovely. I agree 100, Crystal. And that slide guitar. It melts my heart.
    "Maxwell's Silver Hammer"-I like it. I know most people don't, but I really like it. Very campy, some might say "politically incorrect", but I've often thought it sounded like a Kinks tune.
    "Oh! Darling"-1950's doo-wop throwback and one of my favorite rockers. Paul trying to do his Little Richard voice and he reportedly had a hard time getting there so he would sing the song repeatedly in the studio to get his vocals to sound like that.
    "Octopus's Garden"-fun, happy, optimistic tune. Very Ringo. Short, simple, and sweet.
    "I Want You (She's So Heavy)"-epic rocker. It's so hypnotic especially the last 3 minutes of the song with those repeated notes and then it just cuts off!
    "Here Comes The Sun"-Very George. Spiritual and so much optimism and love in this tune. He wrote it while "sagging off" from Apple meetings and went to Eric Clapton's house. It was a sunny spring day and this song truly conveys the mood. I tear up every time I hear it ever since he died especially that Moog flourish near the end of the song. I'm actually tearing up now as I write this. (NOT KIDDING)
    "Because"-I jokingly call this one "Thgilnoom Atanos". Yoko had a lot of input with this song and I love the middle part, "Love is old, love is new" when the Moog comes in. The Moog really makes the song.
    "You Never Give Me Your Money/"Sun King"/"Mean Mr. Mustard"/"Polythene Pam"/"She Came In Through The Bathroom Window"-I love it. All of it. All of these puzzle pieces put together to form a beautiful jigsaw. Crystal, if you ever get a chance to check out Billy Joel's "The Stranger" album, I highly recommend it. His song, "Scenes From An Italian Restaurant", is very influenced by this medley.
    "Golden Slumbers"/"Carry That Weight"-I hate to sound redundant, but I freakin' love it. And I love the callback to "You Never Give Me Your Money". McCartney gets the bulk of the credit here and he deserves it, but I think credit should be given to Lennon, Harrison, and Starr for their parts. To me, it was a team effort and each one contributed.
    "The End"-After 7 albums, Ringo FINALLY gets a drum solo. And, Paul, George, and John take turns playing the guitar solo. I never knew until years later that it was all three of them playing the solo, but you can definitely tell a difference in the styles.
    "Her Majesty"-A cheeky way to end the album, but lovely.

    The last half of the second side is really a single composite set of songs. One of the first albums to use the moog synthesizer. I believe this is the last album they worked on together, even though Let IT Be was released afterward. Let IT was produced by Phil Soector, and kind of uneven. Abbey Road they reunited with George Martin in a conscious attempt to do one last album properly.
