I'm convinced a little ghost lives in every MC101 and he deviously likes to kick you out of your selected preset and sends you back to the initial tone. Happens all the time.
It's wild cause the 404mk2 is the polar opposite, it saves everything, it remembers multi fx, has options to skip confirmations... it's like the two devices were designed by completely different companies.
Exactly what I was looking for. Just got my MC-101 today and thanks to your help I was able to sketch a first song idea. Love that little box. Thank you, Gabe.
Oh snap that's a great idea. I even mentioned SEQ + > in the video for doubling patterns, but I didn't think of doing it for the default, one bar ones!
Nice, Gabe! I’m glad you’re getting on so well with the mc-101. And it’s nice to see people showcase its usability like this! I like the knob catch sort of trick you did with the high hat velocity, and maybe you did it for precision, but when I’m trying to quickly input velocity changes like that you can hold the track button when you put the step in to get two different lower levels of velocity than the default, makes it super quick to put that rhythm in. Anyway nice work, really glad you like the 101 so much and looking forward to more content on it!
Great to see someone talking about the 101 and it's power, I really think some people don't know the capabilities of this machine, especially with the 1.8 update
Yeah! Love this MC-101 video, every little bit helps us master this wonderful little but eccentric beast! I’m working on mating it up with my A. Minifreak too.
Every time I think I'm going to give up on learning my MC-101 and sell it, you persuade me to give it another chance! Thanks for another great tutorial. And also enjoying your Interstellar Cafe album.
3:51 ngl it broke my heart to see that this still happens to a professional like yourself haha, that elusive final value click. Ive had my mc-101 for less than a week and I absolutely love it, thanks for making these videos!
Thanks Gabe! Super useful! I already had a similar workflow. Since the MC101 is a quite deep machine, it is a good confirmation to be on the right way.
Great video. More mc101 content please. I love my MC101 thanks to your tutorials I’ve gotten the hang of it and even released tracks in Apple Music and spotlify with it ( using DistroKid I might add) My only wish list item would be more tracks. At the moment I make multiple projects and join them up in reaper which works but is a tiny bit awkward. So a question is the MC707 (notwithstanding the size and portability) like an 8 track mc101 or is it a totally different animal. Also I’ve just seen the woovebox video on free beats and it looks really interesting will you be reviewing it anytime soon?
Gabe Miller Music - great videos on the MC 101. Has there been any updates to the 101 that allows the groovebox to use the ZenBeats iOS app as a second window/ editor in the same way the Roland Verslab?
Thank you so much for your dedication to making quality videos and music and ALSO teaching. It may just be a side hobby but its beautiful to see THANK YOU
This video is very informative and well explained, and a big help - thanks.I have looked through most of your videos and others but can’t find any way to copy a measure.. As you explained at 9.55? You can copy a measure 1 to 2 by pressing sequence right arrow and indeed copy it across all 8 measures. How do you select a measure say measure 3 then copy it to anywhere in the clip. I can copy notes chords and clips easily but the only way I can copy a measure is to copy the individual notes/chords one by one. Is there a better way?
I own a Volca Sample 2, Novation Circuit Rhythm and few NI Maschines hooked up to my pc to make fully finished tracks. I really do love my portable gears though, the Novation Rhythm has a stellar and fun workflow. Thinking about getting a used MC 101 too, the stereo samples and chords capability makes it more studio ready, still, its workflow looks pretty clunky and not really snappy, even the NI Maschines hooked up to Maschine 2.0 seems quicker and more intuitive.
So I tried to follow along with Gabe, and I found another fun frustration... if you are using audio over usb, you can't audition the sd card with the sound button... You can only hear it once it loads into a pad... but if you use headphones or the main outs, you are fine
Gabe, I am just wondering whether an Arturia Beatstep Pro can push the MC-101 even further by offering a top-notch sequencer and 16 knobs to address those rather hidden parameters? How would you compare the MC-101 to an JD-Xi sound-wise? Thx a lot- keep up the great stuff!
i hope you will also have SH-4d and tell us if it is as much fun and hi fi sounding as mc 101, i know they are different tools but i want to have roland sound in my set up besides circuit rhytm , portability is not an isse for me but fun factor and good sound is. maybe i will fall in ‘why not both’ idea :D your videos big inspiration for having 101, all the best 🤘👍
I've just bought a Novation Circuit Tracks, I know you've already made a lot of videos on this groovebox, but the same as the one for the Roland MC-101 with the Circuit Tracks it would be really very instructive . Thanks for your work! By the way, is the sample pack you sell on your site usable for the Circuit Tracks or is it better to have the Circuit Samples? Thanks 😉
Coming from ciecuit tracks Hated it the first 6 days, loving it now in 6 months. Have some mc101 videos on my youtube if you want to listen playing live
Can you use midi controller like korg nano kontrol (using midi host) to add additional knobs and sliders and reduce "menu diving"? To assign different parameters which are deep in the menu or something?
Good video 👍. I don't have one of these but if I see a used one for a good price I'm thinking of getting one. Not only are your videos a great resource but I've been deep-diving into ZEN Core on my Roland AE-30 so that's a learning curve I've already gone up.
I‘m very confused by the ADSR functionality. Most of the time the decay changes nothing or it does not work like expected. It only does anything after I edit a synth in partial mode. Am I doing something wrong or do I missunderstand the whole concept?
Question… can you think of a reason why pushing sound to audition a sample wouldn’t work?… it’s worked for me in the past but all Of a sudden no longer works.. any ideas?
I'm not super familiar with FL, but I'm guessing it would be pretty similar to what I did here: ua-cam.com/video/9-rcKRFsOUQ/v-deo.htmlsi=S6FCkJHFvncMZKni You may need to download ASIO drivers to make that work. The video I linked shows recording wav files, but once you have that set up, I believe getting midi to work should be very similar.
Thanks for yet another amazing walkthrough, Gabe. Ironically, this video shows while I will NOT be purchasing the MC-101. I'll stick to the OP-1, Novation Circuit Tracks and Rhythm, Polyend Play and Tracker - all of which seem much more fun and intuitive to me. 😊 Thank you for sharing so much with us. 🙏
You do not really use the song mode? You use your max 8 bars and create a song with that and after you might use the layers in your DAW? Cause I am still on my 8-bar songs and never really chain the clips and use the so-called song mode? Would you mind going through the full song mode if you ever use it?? Do you copy over all the midi data over to your DAW as well to be able to edit things even further?
Can you make a video about how to sampling in FL studio mobile with maschine MK3 to play outdoor? A lot of people that can't buy maschine+ could be interested.
So how do you avoid voice stealing? If I have two tracks with strings, slow moving and plucky lead ( + drums and bass tracks ), notes will drop and sometimes it sounds like it is reversed or the attack is messed up. Any ideas.
For stuff that I want to layer and arrange in my DAW, I don't worry about it, as I know I'll be isolating each track while recording them: ua-cam.com/video/liEAUj9VZXQ/v-deo.htmlsi=ltmlRMdopuR3h0sc For stuff that's meant to stay on the 101 and sound full as is, I'd do a few things: - Keep release times of pads low, so that full chords don't bleed into each other - Keep leads monophonic, so that there are fewer notes allowed to overlap - Reduce the number of oscillators in one or more of the synth patches you're using I'm slowly working on a Circuti+101 live set with the 101 as a sound module, so I've been dealing with this very thing lately. Those tips seemed to help.
Just bought a 2nd hand MC101 and I don't know how to edit the note length to 16 (when step sequencing; I'm not very comfortable with live recording yet)
Do you mean how long the note is played for? There should be a length value with one of the 4 control-encoders after you punched it into the sequencer. :)
@@apluve178 Hold down the shift button after clicking the length encoder and then increase with the big encoder :) Hope that helps! Edit: Some people say you can just hold shift and use the length encoder, I'm not entirely sure if that worked for me. Fool around with it for a bit and see for yourself, I know it's definitely possible in some way! :)
@@apluve178 Maybe you have to hold down the encoder click too, so click and hold the C4 encoder, hold shift and use the big encoder in the top right - it's a bit of hand gymnastics but lemme know if it works! :) And you're welcome! ❤️
In drum tracks you can enter softer velocity hits by holding the track number button and pressing the pad. You dont have to manually reduce velocities. This isnt the most intuitive shortcut ill grant you that.
I'm assuming you're joking but here's a serious answer regardless... Explaining stuff takes much longer than actually doing it. That's exactly why I did the speedrun demonstration first, during which I made the beat in about 5 minutes, to show what the process actually looks like. Then I could be as detailed as I needed to be for the proper explanation.
Any one have issues with using mc 101 to play live drums seems off like some tines it sounds other times it doesn't kinda sucks but mc 101 is my favorite nothing better
I'm convinced a little ghost lives in every MC101 and he deviously likes to kick you out of your selected preset and sends you back to the initial tone. Happens all the time.
His name is Roland
It's wild cause the 404mk2 is the polar opposite, it saves everything, it remembers multi fx, has options to skip confirmations... it's like the two devices were designed by completely different companies.
Yes. But you have clip set. If you set to track it will be gone. Think. You make new clip where is no sound set. It is normal.
the ol' "blank first track/pattern/sequence" trick should make that less annoying 😅
Hell yes another MC-101 video ❤
Exactly what I was looking for. Just got my MC-101 today and thanks to your help I was able to sketch a first song idea. Love that little box. Thank you, Gabe.
Another quick shortcut to double the sequencer length is "SEQ + >"
Two taps of that will make it 64steps long ;)
Oh snap that's a great idea. I even mentioned SEQ + > in the video for doubling patterns, but I didn't think of doing it for the default, one bar ones!
Yeah that’s how I do it too
That's how I do it, too.. was going to comment this but you beat me to it! Nice one.

Great to see someone talking about the 101 and it's power, I really think some people don't know the capabilities of this machine, especially with the 1.8 update
Hi , It has song mode?
Exactly what I needed, had forgotten most of the shortcuts due to lack of use, will be giving it another go! Thanks for doing this great job.
Yeah! Love this MC-101 video, every little bit helps us master this wonderful little but eccentric beast! I’m working on mating it up with my A. Minifreak too.
The sounds out of such a small box are insane
Awesome video, very well done! It's inspiring to watch people using this powerful little machine.
