38 Special was formed in 1974 by lead vocalist, guitarist and songwriter Donnie Van Zant (brother of Ronnie and Johnny Van Zant, both Lynyrd Skynyrd) and Don Barnes in 1974 in Jacksonville, Florida.
They are best known for their early 1980’s hit singles “Hold On Loosely” and “Caught Up in You”, along with other Top 40 Billboard Hot 100 chart entries in the 1980s and early 1990s, including “Rockin’ into the Night” or “Wild Eyes Southern Boys”. Their many Gold and Platinum album awards stand in testament to the endurance of a legendary powerhouse. Since 1976, when Lynyrd Skynyrd manager Peter Rudge signed them to A&M Records (their self-titled debut was produced by Edgar Winter’s White Trash’s Dan Hartman), the band has released more than 15 albums. and is still touring relentlessly, bringing their signature brand of ‘muscle and melody’ to the fans worldwide.
38 Special’s “Live At Rockpalast 1981″ show (Loreley, August 29, 1981, The Outlaws, Nine Below Zero and Thin Lizzy were in the festival line-up that day as well) was off the rails, an excellent high energy show. Vocals and sound were on point. The band looked like they were having just as much fun as the audience. This show is, indeed, a memento of an exceptional performance of this legendary Southern Rock band in Germany.
Lineup:
Donnie Van Zant - vocals
Don Barnes - guitar /vocals
Jeff Carlisi - guitar
Jack Grondin - drums
Larry Junstrom - bass
Carol Bristow - background vocals
Lu Moss - background vocals

I want one---this is CLASSIC!😃
Not one phone in sight . How I miss those days .
Nope, Just lighters and beer cans!
You are watching this on a phone.
@56davidwright Nope. It's on a 15 year old 47 inch 📺 screen 😎🎸💙
Yeah it was all lighters back then.
Duh. Cell phones weren’t invented yet, to the masses, that is. 😉 😀
I was 18. with my first real motorbike and my girlfriend behind me we drove to the golden summer night festival in Darmstadt. 38Special, Blackfoot, Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Kansas, More, Blue Oyster Cult and Foreigner. What a day!
Wann war denn das ?
@@tritop 1981, ich war auch da!
Hell Yeah my friend, I was there too, back in 1981. Soccer Stadium Darmstadt "Böllenfalltor". A beautiful Sunday...🤩
@@MagicMetal666 am Bölle; und ich hab's tatsächlich verpasst, sehr ärgerlich, ich wohne um die Ecke
Parabéns 😂😂❤😊
.38 Special was an important southern R&R group and loved by many. They deserve more recognition.
@@MrJohnnyDistortion Their albums sold is the number that counts. They sold more than twenty million albums.
They outlasted all the other Southern Rock bands from the 70s coming into the 80s, and found a way to stay relevant in the decade of MTV
@impalaman9707 Molly Hatchet is still making albums on a European label. I read they are popular in northern Europe. I don't know how many original players are left.
@@Glenn-o6l I know Blackfoot remained popular in Germany, but they were like a Southern Rock version of Iron Maiden!
@@Glenn-o6l .. Steve Holland was last original member of the band's classic lineup, he died in 2020
boy, I sure wish I could be a young teenager again and hear all these great songs for the first time! 38 special is a great band!
This is what southern rock is all about. From the music, clothes, and attitude to the singing style of the background singers.
Thanks for posting this is a gift to me! I saw them open for Rush 04/27/1980 in Indianapolis, IN at Market Square Arena. I was 12. Very similar set but abbreviated. Rush gave them 45 min and Donnie definitely threw a six pack to the crowd one at a time! Nobody can throw out beers to the crowd today - a bygone era of fun, frivolity and discovery - and Peavey amps!!

Thank you. I remember driving around North Kingstown, Rhode Island back in 85 listening to Wild Eyed Southern Boys.
38 Special opened for KISS at the first rock concert I ever attended on August 19, 1977 in San Diego, California. I became an instant fan. Cheap Trick played after 38 Special. We enjoyed all of this for less than $10. I still have my KISS tour book. What a day! What a show! 🤩🤩🤩
I saw this tour in Salt Lake City, Utah. New England and .38 Special warmed up for Molly Hatchet. It was a fantastic show! .38 Special had two drummers. Dale Krantz on backup vocals, married Gary Rossington of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Wild Eyed Southern Boys was an excellent album and tour. For Molly it was the Beatin the Odds tour, and New England was Livin in the Eighties. I still have a drum stick and a ping pong ball that had .38 Special on it. Great tours back in the Eighties.
SO Lucky!!! I’m just a tad bit jealous ha!
Had the privilege of seeing them twice, special forces tour, and tour de force tours great both times!!
Real rock n roll at its finest. Love them Peaveys
Peaveys amps, they cooked in their day.
I played that 1981 cassette in 1981 everyday for months. It should have fell apart but it still works to this day. Loved this band!
Seen these guys in 1980 in Darmstadt Germany, they played in the Summer Night Festival. There where 7 bands on the bill and they where the 3rd band to hit the stage, right after Iron Maiden who was on there 1st major tour. And to tell the truth Maiden was the reason I was there and my wife was there to see Kansas. And it was a good concert.
Parece com lidiner skinner
I was lucky enough to be at Studio One in Doraville Georgia many times in the early 1980's when 38 Special recorded there. We talked, laughed, cut up, and played pinball many nights there. I also saw them several times around the southeastern United States. Great bunch of guys!
Thank you very much for sharing this concert, there aren't many videos of 38 Special from this period.
You better be one hell of a musician to be in this band. Just raw talent at its peak. Still one of my favorite bands of all time. Long live .38 special
Thanks for the upload of a great high energy early show!
I remember watching this on German TV when i was 15. Became an insta-fan. Long time ago.
I heard 38 Special the 1st time on AFN Bremerhaven, when Hold On Loosely was released for airplay and was caught instantly from the 1st tones on. Wild-Eyed Southern Boys is still my favourite album from the Band. I sure saw this Rockpalast when it was aired back then. Good times and good memory from the early `80s. 🙂
I was there in Karlshrue Germany, the same time you were overseas. Army
Ah, AFN radio, the soundtrack of my adolescence 🎸 💪🏻
I taped some bits on December 9th, 1980, after John Lennon got murdered but I should have taped them all the time, especially Night Line with Sgt. Kenny ...?
38 Special at their best, i was, i am, and always i'll be fan !!! Robin Hood is a master piece... Thanks Don Barnes and Jeff Carlisi !
This band really put out some great music! And there are Vanzants in the band Southern Rock Royalty!!!!😁 Love this band listen to them often!!
Awesome band..👉💎👈..
Fantastic performance..😎🤩💯👍👏👌🔥💫🎉🥂!!!!.....
Wow those amps!!!!! ❤
Those guitars are up front in the mix 🎸🎸
The Peavey sound.
Simplesmente fantásticos, uma gde banda de Rock'n Roll, verdadeiros e subestimados músicos! Grande 38 Special.
Hold On Loosely is bangin' here! Love the vocals 👌
Now this I can get into!
There are some friends of mine that know some of these guys from back then. Especially Brad Davis and Twinkle Yochim :->
I saw 38 Special about 10 years ago, they put on a great show! I’d love to have been at this one ~ though! Thanks for sharing!
Guitarist 🔆 Jeff Carlisi 🔆 is Da Man! 😍
Jeff went on to form a band with Benjamin Orr of the Cars called “Big People.” Along with Liberty DeVitto, Pat Travers, Derek St Holmes & Rob Wilson. He helped Ben after he was diagnosed with fatal pancreatic cancer. They rocked until Ben dropped… a great friend!
My favorite song is “Hold On Loosely” and the meaning, gentlemen, is SO true… 😘
There's an interesting story Jeff told about how the Cars influenced 38 Special to write a hit song. He says he heard the opening riff of "My Best Friend's Girl" on the radio one day. He didn't like it, wasn't even his type of music. But once he heard that "jeh--jeh-jeh" riff, he took that riff and used it to write "Hold On Loosely"! So he's owed it to Elliott Easton ever since and there's the beginning of the Cars/38 Special relationship
@impalaman9707
Wow, that’s so fascinating! It’s no wonder now, that I love both songs/bands. It’s cool to hear the backstories of how songs are created; lots of borrowing and emulating. Thanks for sharing with me!
Btw… as a young(er) lady in my late 20s, I drove a white ‘64 Chevy Impala 2 door w/electric windows & blue interior. Not an SS though, darn it! Anytime I stopped to get gas, men would ask me if she was for sale? I loved that car and she was definitely a “guy magnet” ha! (Don’t know if that’s what your name is referring to, but thought I’d share). 😁

My Marine son and I traded cars 11 years ago… long story. He got my silver ‘2005 Chevy Impala & I got his inferno red ‘2010 Dodge Challenger. He about died when he heard his ole mama was gonna drive the Hot Rod; & not his dad! 😂😆

Peavey gear Rocks ! I use a Peavey EFX 2X12 To power my 1983 Peavey T60 guitar which I would put up against ANY other American made guitar !!!

The band was never the same after Jeff left.
@ronaldwilson9525 Someone of Jeff's caliber is never easy to replace.
I would love to have all that PA sound equipment. My god the side fills alone look like they could knock ya down. I bet that show sounded awesome for the folks who was there.
outstanding
Great band. That's some serious Flintstones fashion the one dude is rocking.
Loreley war und ist eine supergeile Location ❤ die "guitar army from florida " war auch ein echter Knaller , zum Finale kam Thin Lizzy auf die Bühne, jaja das war ein Klasse Weekend 🎉🎉🎉

I can remeber this concert,it was my first Loreley Visit 🤩😍🤘🤘🤘 I'llnever forget 🤩😍🤘🎸🎸🎹
38 Special rock on Legends
Barnes makes 38 special 38 special. His vocals. Just my opinion. God I miss those days. Real rock n roll
This is great.
People don't understand the energy that goes into a show like this ! WOW ! No wonder some of those ole boys like to play 8 ball LOL . Try to keep that energy up for a 6 month tour and more . .38 Special in their heyday was a GREAT band !
Awesome ❤ back in the day!
Bass player, Larry Junstrom was the original bass player for Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Yeah, it was a shame how Skynyrd dumped him in favour of Leon. I guess little brother felt sorry for him and picked him up
@impalaman9707 he said in a documentary he left skynyrd cos they weren't making any money at that time. But Leon was definitely an upgrade anyway
@@norman9291 Oh, the age old "this band's going nowhere, so I'm going to leave"---and then they regret their decision later when the band become superstars. That story has been repeated time and again throughout rock history. And honestly--I feel sorry for those guys! Guys like George Tickner who left Journey after their first album to go to medical school because he thought becoming a doctor would become more profitable. Boy, was he wrong! John Curlewski, who left Styx before they became popular. And on and on. I guess there's something to say for patience, and some of these guys, I guess, just didn't have it. I'm glad, however, 38 Special gave Junstrom a "second chance" at stardom. 38 Special is kinda the "island of misfit toys" of Southern Rock bands, but they made it work
I thought Leon Wilkerson was
@barrywainwright3391 Nope. Larry Junstrom was the bass player from 1964-1970 then replaced by Leon.
I saw The Outlaws at the Spectrum in Philadelphia in 1979. They were awesome.
Moram da prekinem video,
Vraćam se na mračni koncer iz 1980-ih.
God bless
Jep! :D Thanks! Tinja,Markku&Huns
Gotta love the wall of Peaveys!
Show top!!! Muito bom!! Energia pura!!!
Hold On Loosely probably's the best love advice I ever heard in a rock and roll song lol... and yet few guys actually listen to it, huh?
That’s what “this lady” has been saying all along. Some men, sadly, don’t get it and want to control a woman. We like some freedom too, just let us know you care about us now and then and want the best for us. Love is a two way street.
I was at this show but i can't find myself.😂
ich auch :)
Because yor are a Däumling, means a little bit to little.

Why he looks like Ronnie Van Zant?
There's something I just can't wrap my head completely around. Rebel flags in Germany. That said, this is just a good solid concert from a band that might not have got the love of Skynyrd, but played a big part in the Southern Rock phenomenon .
This era of their career is my favorite. Stone Cold Believer & Robinhood are awesome songs. As the band progressed Don Barnes sang the lead on most of the hits & I always respected Donnie for adjusting his role in the band by not singing lead as much. Great Band !
Back in like '98 I saw.38 Special open for Lynard Skydard but the strange thing was it was the same people playing each set but in different clothing as if we wouldn't know
Wow. Donnie could have easily passed for Ronnie's twin at this point!
The Van Zant-brothers looked all very similar. But I never saw Ronnie that quick on his feet onstage❗😅
Leon Wilkeson is there too😅
Ronnie was on a whole other level
Except he lacked his brother's singing ability. He was like Marlon Jackson to Michael Jackson. Close in age and similar in looks---except talent. Looks is ALL they share!
@@impalaman9707
Well, maybe a hat, too! 😂
26:26 the guy´s hair and Indian clothes are from the Golden Era.
Let´s the Light take control !!
What can you say about Don Barnes. He IS rock and roll personified! Great singer---great guitar player---great HAIR! Total BADASS in every way! Donnie Van Zant, on the other hand, was just the band's mascot!
'Bands mascot' Really?? Have you actually watched the video?
@@markb5709 Yeah, he was playing a guitar that didn't sound like it was plugged in at all---like it was just for show, and didn't sing as well as his partner who sang AND played---the REAL rocker in the band, Don Barnes!
👌Smokin'
The Fred Flintstone shirt is hilarious.
👍😃
Such a different dynamic to see Donnie play frontman like his brother rather than Don Barnes taking most of the fronting.
At 48:08, Donnie's getting so carried away he was almost ready to 'crowd surf"! I'm sure they would have taken him!
I love 38 Special but when the backing singers are higher in the mix than the guitars you know something is wrong! 😂
I watched a video where Jeff talked about building that guitar from scratch.
He didn't build it. That's Jay Rhyne guitar.
Eita me lembro muito mais de 38 Special nessa epoca do que o proprio Lynyrd Skynyrd
Where was the 2nd drummer Steve for this show? 😊

No live Auto-tune. How I miss those days.
Kickass band and music. Poor Barnes hair was in need of some conditioner. haha
Peavey amplifiers---just like big brother Skynyrd played through!
Is that Leon Wilkeson on bass ?? That's Gary Rossingtons Wife on backup vocals I believe . 38's version of "The Honkettes" ..
Dale was singing in the Rossington Collins Band in 1981.
It's Larry Junstrom on bass and backing vocals are Carol Bristow and Lu Moss.
Dale Krantz, Garry Rossington's wife, sang in 38 Special until 1980.
There are the names of all the musicians in the video description.
Feelin alittle misty
Ich war dabei, 6 Stunden Fahrt die sich gelohnt haben. Und die Ticketpreise zu heute ein Witz

38 Skynyrd
Yes he definitely looks like his brother Ronnie
Got some canadian whiskey
One of my favorite bands. I've only seen KISS more than. 38 Special live. My first girlfriend broke up with me using the lyrics to Hold On Loosely. 😂 Man Don Barnes looks like one scary rocker here as opposed to the distinguished gentleman he is today.
