17k+ hours healer and a former full time healer coach point of view:
First of all, I´m doing around 600-700 keys every season as a healer. I´ve been flamed or pointed at when something went wrong maybe 5 times alltogether. That beaing said, I don´t think blaming the healer is the reason why people quit playing healers or don´t play them at all. My clients only confirmed this.
    My thoughts on this topic:
    1. Lately healers have a lot on their shoulders in m+, button bloat, kicks, stuns, affixes...even as a hardcore player I still have moments when i just want to chill a bit, m+ does not allow that, my adrenaline levels are much higher when im playng a healer than when im playing dps, usually after a few pug keys my head hurts and that´s not something people want to experience after a hard day of work. Healers have overall harder time in m+ than dps with the skill they need and the effort they need to put into it.
    2. even if one person in m+ makes a mistake (in 20+) the morale goes down, even more so for the healer as we have direct impact on the situation, this mentality can quickly ramp up in keys (especially higher ones) which usually makes people leave after a few deaths
    3. This point is for the pushing community - People do not get invited into groups as off meta healers. People tend to invite only the "best of the best". That means, you have to play the meta healer, you need to have gear and you need to have rio. This issue is because of the bursty nature of healing profiles in keys, that only a few healers can handle well. Paladin especially. This usually does not apply for lower keys and weekly keys as the community is glad that someone heals, but try to join a +24 pug as a monk or holy priest nowadays. If you do not like playing a melee healer these days, you are basically stuck doing weeklys which at least for me, there is no point doing that on a geared character.
For now, I too am enjoying playing dps more even when pushing keys. As of now melee healer is not for me. Last season burned me out a bit because of the points mentioned above. If the situation changes and m+ will become more healer friendly, I ´d gladly heal again. However if I have to press 36 buttons to be effective, reminding people to stand in my efflorescence as a druid, if I have to run after every ranged with my evoker when i want to heal them or when I have to play between melee and ranged with my shaman so that chain heal actually jumps from my warrior to my hunter somehow as they are standing in narnia while i´m doing all the mechanics and they are pressing 4 buttons...no thanks.
Sorry for the long post, here´s a hearth

Let me dibs your post and gave a point-of-view of someone that only played DPS and Tank since mid-BFA.
Started to heal in Dragonflight with a Rdruid (which i feel like its the easiest healer to play, didnt try rsham, hpally to compare, but i did try Mistweaver and HPriest). and i must say, while everyone is having a hard time healing in m+, i personally loving it, maybe its because i dont play high keys too often (+17-19 mostly), if i would go a bit futher i would start to see those ("+22-24 Hpal"), but interrupting, C.Cing packs, doing some heal checks (naraxxas kekw) and "DPSing" just feels good to do, but i must say, as a main tank, in the past, i would say the tank in this game have the most responsabilities to do in a m+, but today, i feel like the healers have it, they need to do more than just "heal", choosing to CC or interrupt a Add its way important than healing someone that is a 70ish% health, doing mechs, "trusting" that they will pot in a specific part that i cant heal for x circustance (using a GCD in the Incorporeal/Afflicted).
This is my opinion on healers, trying mistweaver atm, loving it as well but its more complicated than rdruid lmao

Agree on everything, this expansion for various reason i didn't play a lot but S1 as an evoker burned me out a little bit, i liked the class but couldn't stand playing with ranged.
In S2 i'm playing DPS very casually and it's much more relaxed.

@@dracoforces You fistweaving or caster (chiji or yulon)? I'm having a blast using chiji for the first time since I started healing monk in BFA and fistweaving has been a blast and very potent. Using the last pack in Dawn of the infinite before the last boss (2 gold guys and a dragon) At 439 I can burst up to 215k hps in a 5 man group that doesnt have massive dps to kill one of them off quicky. My 447 pally "can" do that, but it just isnt the same feel. I also tried resto druid this season and last xpac...they feel bad by comparison outside of raid; and even in raid, you don't see the punch that the other 2 mentioned heals have. I only got my Rdruid to 430 but It just wasnt fun; That and the damage is just not flowing out of it for me like it does with fistweaving monk or hpally in a group where i'm not worrying about interrupts.

I think one of the biggest things that turned me away from healing is people just expecting to be carried by healers. They don't want to do anything but their rotation and tanks just want to get through the dungeon as soon as possible. It's stress that is unneeded.

As a holy priest healer, it's pretty simple to explain why I'm currently playing an aug evoker.
    1) Tanks don't use their own defensives. They expect the healer to keep them alive while they're pulling half the dungeon in a quest to 3-chest. When you can 2-chest an 18 with one group where the tank is mostly healing themselves through proper defensive management (freeing you up to do the utilities and heal the party), and yet not even time a key with a different group where you're having to heal the tank almost exclusively because he won't, the problem isn't your heals. In a solid group, sometimes the tank outheals me. That's okay; it means he's managing his stuff.
    2) DPS folks don't do mechanics. It's one thing to out-DPS the mechanics in a 2 or even a 10 if you have a solid group, but on a 15-18 people need to do the mechanics. I can't heal you through your stupidity, especially when I'm also handling mass dispels and God knows what else. If you're not doing mechanics AND you have the "heal me" tank...you're busting that key.
    3) Tanks want to have high damage. For some reason in DF you have these tanks that want to also top the damage chart. Buddy, I just need you to tank. You don't need to be top dog in damage. I don't care if you did 300k on a burst if we all wiped because you were too busy watching details and not watching the boss positioning. Then comes the "why didn't you keep us alive" stuff.
I love healing. But the whole point of a group seems to be failing in terms of mindset. Each member has a job, but they're also responsible for themselves, what they're doing, what their utilities are, and where they're standing. In addition, the whole point is to help each other as a team. For some reason that's falling by the wayside as everyone seeks personal glory. I don't care if details says I put out 25K heals or 125K heals. If no one died and the key got timed, that's a win. And if I am pumping heals but not having any fun because my blood pressure is through the roof and the environment is toxic, that defeats the entire purpose of it being a GAME.

Overall I think the lack of healers in M+ but also in Arena boils down to:
    1) the toxic wow community; 2) lack of balancing; 3) just insane level of the skill ceiling; 4) just too much stuff going on that a healer needs to cope with whilst trying to keep EVERYTHING alive

I stopped healing as my main the back end of the last season and really ramped up my DPS playing this season. I can tell you that the game immediately became both more fun and easier in Mythics. I still enjoy raid healing but healing mythics is one of the most toxic gaming experience in gaming life. DPSing is so much easier and less stressful that it almost feels like a different game. It's wild.

*_TL;DR_*_ if you want to be a big boy and take control of your experience in the game...start taking responsibility for what you can do to change the outcome of the dungeon and also of how you yourself act socially. It will remove like 95% of the so called "toxicity"(and just be an adult and deal with the rest) and you'll enjoy PuGing so much more. Or just find others who are as unwilling to improve as yourself to play with ^^_
I've been main healing solo PuGs as Rdudu since Legion and only stopped this season because of how weak the spot healing is, which was a big point of enjoyment for me with healing.
I've literally never experienced this "toxicity" towards healers _(edit: in m+ and raid PuGs, that is)._ The few clueless people who complained about my healing I dealt with by either saying "my bad" when I made a mistake or explaining why it wasn't my mistake when someone dies if I understood it myself...or just banter and/or be rude back if they're clearly just blame shifting and/or being an ass ^^
If you are constantly getting people complaining that you need to drink then you're playing inefficiently with your spells and drinking. Learn to do it better or play with people who don't mind you being slow. Because you're literally being slow. I need to constantly tell people to stop waiting for me to drink in lower dungeons lol, people there are _way_ too accepting of bad mana management imo.
If people are dying because you aren't using CDs when big AoE is happening or because you're not using external CDs or spot healing or dispelling when some DoT is smacking down a DPS then you're not ready for that keylevel.
Go practice in a lower key. Read up on what the mobs do. Look at what your class and spec can do to prevent damage from happening in the first place(like stunning or otherwise interrupting dangerous casts). Stop relying on other people to do things in PuGs. Do what you can first and if you fail at it sometimes(like everyone does), it's ok to think "why do I have to do literally everything" and be annoyed by it for a bit...but then you have to just admit to yourself that you could've done better, if that's the case, and try to improve for the next time(or find friends to play with whom you can expect to play good consistently if you can't handle PuGs). If someone is being rude about it then just realise that they're human and that they struggle with taking responsibility or they're just so bad at the game that they don't even realise what happened and are acting out like a teenager. Be the bigger person and don't escalate it into a fight.
This "toxicity" narrative seems to me to just be people not wanting to improve and not being mature enough to play with people who don't have a vested interest in being extremely polite to someone they will never meet again and who is making their dungeon 3x more difficult than it has to be by not practicing to get better in lower keys before they move up to higher ones.
There are plenty of guilds and communities for people who don't want to improve. Go find one and you can do snail pace dungeons where you wipe on every dangerous pull with people who don't mind doing that lol.
Also in my experience it's way more common that a DPS or tank is causing the group to disband because of their awful DPS or tanking than it is that a healer is because of their low healing.
Healers always being blamed was a thing up to like Cata/WoD because 98% of randoms in dungeons were completely clueless(aka the game was way more segregated skillwise with raiders very rarely playing with the rest of the playerbase). Healers aren't getting any worse treatment than anyone else for playing bad these days...unless you're in a group that can't handle a +4... _maybe_ you'll find those kinda players there.
_Edit2: oh and the only time I _*_actually_*_ had a group being toxic towards me was when tanking a dungeon as Guardian in Legion for the first time(I think it was a M0 lol) without doing any practice whatsoever and genuinely just being completely overwhelmed by not knowing my hotkeys and whatnot. Which feels bad ofc and they could've been less rude about it etc...but it also helped me realise that I was actually awful at Guardian, prompting some practice before going again. This season I have all keys on both Tyran and Fort _*_very_*_ comfortably tanked at +20 (:_

My story: I played a holy pally healer in TBC classic, just doing normal dungeons with people, having to advertise for groups in general chat. Had a blast. Fair but easy, somehow, only 3 or 4 main spells to cast, all effective, but still had to keep my wits about me. Felt impactful socially with every cast, and I never felt the need to do top-level content with sweaties, I feel like the mechanics of WoW simply don't work well for competitive play. I also feel like the loss of community makes heals lose some respect. I'm trying to roll a Pres Evoker and found myself on your channel, it's very fun in small doses. Mostly I just want to log in and just play green-number pinball, but having to dodge bullshit glowies and manage a ton of buttons, not having anything explained, feeling bad for not wanting to do Blizz's job for them by downloading addons to tell me why i'm playing badly, people not talking, etc. just weakens the experience. Just wanna be a friendly dragon and work my way up the raids that I missed, apparently I can't do that...can't pug-raid Fyrakk with Heroic gear and little experience.

Healing on 3 chars, Tanking on 2, DPSing on 2 this season. The balancing/expectations is probably the biggest issue. Boss fights and affixes pretty much all land on the healer and in pug land stupid/ignorance reigns supreme. Most DPS players are just mashing their dps buttons and very rarely give a thought as to when to use a personal to reduce their damage taken. They end up learning a mechanic only because they ended up dead on the floor when a healer could not save them. So yeah, eventually every healer ends up finding regulars to run with or swaps roles to not deal with these issues.

As a healer all affixes are also my responsibility - Hexing Incorps etc. CC shadow thingies, slowing, Dispelling Bursting. The list goes on, but i do that so my DPS can smash keys. Doesn't help that their "spam heal" like regrowth on resto is literally twice as powerful on boomkin. or that lots of heals, especially hots just feel really weak. Like reju healing barely 5% of a persons health over it's full duration. Or abilities like swiftmend barely healing for 25% of their hp on a crit. Dunno, buttons just don't feel strong as a healer anymore. Just not fun, at least for me and my friends.

Running your own key let’s you be picky about who you take to your key. If raiderio tells you the average score to time your key is 700… don’t invite people below that. Be patient.
Getting to 11 keys will allow you to save up wyrm crests which you can use to craft 437s to fill in your lowest gear slots. It’s usually a good idea to target bracers, belts, boots first since they provide main stat but won’t interfere with any tier slot upgrades you might get from the vault. It does take a TON of 11s to make all the crafted gear you can make. But then you’ll have a much easier time pushing your own key. Also if you’re targeting specific keys you have low scores in when you pug you will eventually raise your score enough that it will be easier to find pug groups.
Being in a guild with lots of people who run M+ is so fun and so helpful. This is a social game. If your current guild isn’t very big or active there’s nothing wrong with looking around until you find something better. I am so glad I did. There are websites that help you find guilds that make the process easier. And don’t totally rule out the idea of a server transfer because the right guild changes everything. My keys went from pug struggle city to crushing 21s

    Resto druid main since MoP.
Between the level of responsibility/stress pug healing causes in high pug groups I basically stopped healing at the higher end of M+ after getting most of my portals done in the first 2 weeks of the season.
Healing the top end does not feel rewarding enough for the amount of effort it feels you have to put in. Moments of skill as a healer rarely get noticed or appreciated and I would stop after a session of keys feeling dejected knowing that I am expected to be responsible for the health of the group/most affixes, but being somewhat at the whims of 'are my dps going to do the mechanics/not stand in shit this key'.
I think a large portion of the player base see their HP bars as a healer problem, and when that hits zero 'blame the healer' comes out first.
Seasoned healers have gotten sick of it, I myself have switched to Guardian and I know the other healers in my guild now refuse to pug.
Meanwhile the new pool of prospective healers have so much on their plate to handle for so little returns, compared to just doing damage, that its no wonder the amount of pug healers is at an all time low.

Very good points of view. Myself I quit disc priest after 5 years of maining after the rework. I used to get blamed most times for mistakes or stuff like that, so I would go into guides where AutomatikJak tells you "This is the only optimal move on disc priest and holy" and I said ok; Specs suck, there unrewarding, dungeons are a waste of time where I get flamed everyday, queue times are too long, and I'm stuck into a meta with a stupid covenant. So I tried DH for the first time, never looked back. The reason I played healer is because of the diversity of players and the impact I had on the game, I'm a bit of autustic kind of player so Disc priest was painfully rewarding, and when you finally say "I've had enough" it will never be the same.

Healing pugs is a really bad time at almost any key level. Most tanks have no pause button and chain pull the entire dungeon without caring if the other players can keep up, dps ignore mechanics and tunnel vision their damage. The amount of unavoidable damage in every dungeon is way too high just to force groups to bring a healer because the 1% were bringing 4 dps instead of a healer. My friend has basically been forced to main a healer now instead of his tank because it takes way too long to find a healer and waiting around kills the mood to do M+ at all. If they aren't gonna do anything to make healing a bit more friendly, they should at least give extra reward for healers, like supply boxes and gold that they did for wrath classic

I'm sorry for the late response, but my problem is groups who disband early if they have a wipe or two in the 18-20 range. At keys lower than 16-17, healing can be problematic occasionally, but some of the healing checks aren't as noticeable. Once you start getting into 18 and higher, the healing checks become a lot more significant. I found that with so many groups just disbanding early, you never get a chance to LEARN how to manage those healing checks. Sometimes a different combination of cooldowns or pacing is needed on a boss, but they won't spend the time to let you learn it. Usually these healing checks are made MUCH easier by dps actually using defensives, but good luck getting pugs to do that.

  • @josephpavelich2781
    @josephpavelich2781 Рік тому +1

As someone who has mained a healer since Vanilla, I can answer this easily. Why would a healer want to heal mythic +. You can never be the right fit for any group. If you don't dps in a five man than the groups complain that you are holding them back or being lazy, if you dps then your healing suffers and players die a lot because the game has gone to spike damage taken and spike damage done being "skillfull". Used to be slower steady amounts of damage being done to and by the groups, which made it fun for healers. As a healer now once you pop cooldowns you are pretty useless to the group. I get making certain aspects of the game for higher end players, but 90% of gamers are above average at the very best. This means your average healer is not going to be able to do 50-60k hps and 20-30k dps every run. Most healers if they focus healing do good to do 35-40k overall hps and 5-8k overall dps if that.
Blizzard needs to make the dungeons have steadier damage output, buff healers by making the mana cost of some spells a little less, and buff the damage of all the dps by 5-8% to compensate for the dps loss from the healer. True healers want to heal and have fun healing, if we wanted to dps we would have rolled a dps class instead. This crap of wanting every healer to dps is ignorant, and ruins a lot keys because healers let dps or tanks die because instead of already healing and being able to handle certain moments they now have to stop dpsing and switch over to heals mid fight and try to catch up instead of already handling the moment.

Ok, I will watch the rest of the video after I leave this comment (since I don't want to forget). Let me give you a perspective of why at least some people (and healers) aren't doing m+ from people like me. Hopefully I don't repeat something you already covered lol.
The few times I've tried it, it was insanely toxic and un-fun. I've done probably 7-8 ever (throughout every expansion that had m+) and every time I join one there is always this very toxic, aggro vibe about the entire thing. I always hear "well join a guild" - I did. All but 2 that I did were in a guild, and not the same one. The same mindset goes into guilds because those people are still people that play WoW.
Another reason is, regardless of performance, people like me don't like other people staring at a detail meter ready to shoot off their mouth in an unproductive way at any given moment as they analyze everyone else's performance but theirs. It, once again, makes it hostile and unfun. This is a video game, not a job evaluation.
People like you, and people that have always regularly ran m+ either have a set group of friends they have played with forever so it's actually fun or they don't care if the run is toxic or not and it just rolls off their back. I think players like you get caught into a loop of "since I play this why is nobody else playing this" without really looking at the SOCIAL aspect of it, not just difficulty and numbers.
Players like me would love to do this content, but the community is established and the friend groups were made years ago and are now clique-ish. WoW isn't new and finding these groups to be apart of is extremely taxing for an adult with a real life who doesn't already have friends established in-game. In essence, players like me "missed the boat", it ain't comin back and the remaining players are extremely unwelcoming and unforgiving to anyone new.
Yes, there are discords like "WME", but the average player doesn't dig that deep. They try out a feature, see that it's full of assholes and don't do that feature again or just stop playing altogether (like every single one of my friends that I tried to get into WoW did).
As for the healer part, take everything I said above and now make it somehow worse, more unforgiving, more unfun and more toxic - but this time not from just players, but from the developers too! Gee, I can't imagine why there isn't a line around the corner waiting to heal a m+ lmao

You talk about healers should get better but dance around the elephant: Should healing really be twice as hard as the other roles in M+? Because that is what I experienced when I gave up healing. Both tanking and especially DPS are easy and chill roles in M+. You’re not overloaded with tasks. Your class got powerful tools to handle your job, where healers get boiled fettuccini. Your talents need not be perfect. Your play need not be perfect. You are still allowed to have fun.

It has taken me a very long time to get the courage up to do heroics, even though I'm now ridiculously overgeared for the dungeons. On top of learning the role, the class and spec, there all the additional addon's like Vudoo, PI announcements, low health warnings.. all while the rest of the mechanics are beeping and blaring at you. It's a genuinely super stressful experience which isn't really fun at all until you can get good at, which takes a while (at least for me). I'm trying my first low M+ key today so wish me luck!

One thing Blizzard should work on to make healers more accessible is to make them more effective out of the box. I’m a pretty experienced healer and I’ve healed and timed up to 24/25. There’s is zero chance I could play the role without quite a few add-ons. How does a new player know that he’s going to be awful without Vuhdo, WAs, DBM etc? I can’t even imagine stepping into a dungeon to heal without those. Even having good name plates to easily see who is about to get casted on. Without timers how could you ever optimize something like cloud burst totem or any healer ability that requires ramp? It’s just crazy how much extra shit you need to be a good healer. I’ve had guildmates ask me to teach them how to heal and my first step is a screen-share on discord to see their UI.

I'm a Multi-class healer main myself and I started playing halfway BFA. In season 3 of Shadowlands I achieved KSM for the first time and right now I am struggling to hit it in Dragonflight. Healing feels harder, dungeons feel more punishing.
I definitely wish the community as a whole would be more positive. Criticism is fine, but give it in a way that doesn't make someone feel terrible. Give some tips, dont yell at them "YOUR HEALING SUCKS". In the end it's in both your best interest that people in your group know what they're doing wrong. I'm a returning player (play a lot of FFXIV and love both games to death) who loves healing but hasn't seriously healed WoW since WoD, with a sprinkling in later expansions. I'm nervous about jumping in, but this video really makes me thing "challenge accepted"
    Thanks for the fantastic analysis.
A friend asked if there was a transcript. Could you provide the link to the community thread you mentioned so she can at least see the discussion?

You can't link community threads and its the worst feature in the world T.T
So I'd just head over and scroll. Thankfully it wont be too far down, but sadly I can't link it at all D:

I just picked up Healing, so we have more heals to run m+ with. Healing is considerably more fun with a premade group. With pugs im struggeling on +17 keys, but with my guild im comfortably 2chesting +20s on a freshly geared 430 alt. I dont even bother trying to pug anymore.

It has fundamentally changed. That's the problem. Bring it back to healers just healing and make their dps not matter. Boom, healers galore. Healers with a lot of experience that may have been doing it since vanilla (me) and don't like the way they "Fundamentally" changed it.

If you are pugging be nice to your tank/healer if things aren’t going well you don’t need to flame them before dropping group, just drop group.

I adore healing in raid but M+ is a very different environment that i feel i am always havinf to adjust to. I really do not like the next affixes and feel like in coordinated groups they are nothing but absolute chaos in pugs.
I had to switch from the Hpally as well because the switch to doing damage to heal really threw me off and thats not my favorite style of play, and with Monk doing the same i was left without a spec i enjoyed so i took a break.
I came back for this xpac and preservation is such a nice breath of air. It has 3 specs I love and being able to help out my raid team has been amazing.
So yeah i am really glad i took a break, and was able to come back with a new mindset and healer that I can vibe with to my hearts content.

Its because all the other roles think its the Healers job to keep them alive while ignoring avoidable damage

bliz really need to go back and implement the proving grounds system, as a healer you take all the weight of the party if your in a pug that is not aware of whats going on. if they force players to go into a training room in order to do like let say past +10 i think it would encourage players to increase in skill if they want to push harder

I always loved to play healer, even before Mythics were introduced.
I played my Disci Priest in DF up to +16 keys. So I am not a pro or anything but quite decent I think.
The reason why I dont play a healer atm is because I think it's the most stressful role you can take.
Damage is quite simple especially in lower keys.
Tank always felt to me a bit more responsible for you are doing the pulls and decide the route.
But as a heal I always feel like I have to fix other peoples fault, especially in random groups since I dont play with pre arranged groups.
I mean in a good group it's cool.
But I had so many groups were either the tank just overestimated him or the group as a whole.
Or I had DDs that just didnt interrupted and as a result put a lot of damage on the group or even wipe it, as well as dont using personal defense cooldowns.
So overall healing just felt super stressful in higher keys for me.
Since I dont enjoy DD that much I actually play Tank atm.
Even if I feel responsible for taking the route and estimate how large of a pull I can manage.
It feels a bit more relaxing to me than healing.
And probably the last factor is that I have more things going in private and I got less time to play, so I try to make my gaming time less stressful and less tryhard than I did before.

I’m so happy blizzard cut the crap and got rid of people who were just playing healer to basically drift through content. Now healing is intense and even more fun than before. You need to be faster, it’s like they made all healing in line with discipline priest difficulty of healing and then they gave mobs 25% more damage and 25% more hp to us to make it even harder! Really loving the new direction for healing dungeons!

As a dps player that has been getting into tanking because my dps spec is off meta... I feel this, the first key I tanked I got blamed for one of the dps' many deaths and I looked over detail deaths afterward turns out he was getting smacked by shades lol.. it's frustrating as frick, and makes me not want to play these kinds of specs.

I’ve been a healer since wrath as a long time healer I’ve never had this hard of a time healing in m+ I switched to tank and immediately having more fun and pushing higher keys than I ever did as a healer, the problem is holy paladin really set the expectation every healer should have the other classes simply need more buffs.

I was a mythic healer in shadowlands, and I decided to play tank and dps in dragonflight. Because there is one thing that I dislike, that is why the healer needs to constantly look at the party/raid frame, and other role can just enjoy the game play. Healer needs to constantly look and 3 or 4 things, character positioning, weakaura for CD and abilities, party frames, and sometimes teammates positioning. It is a super stressful role, and a 'nanny' role in group contents

I haven't done a m+ since SL season one. And I haven't done anything over a 10 since BFA. I heal on all my toons. And I just know getting back into it everything will be blames in heals. 🤷
