Relatively new to the channel, but I have enjoyed it a lot. You rest up and get better, so you can keep bringing us along with you. To anyone that sees this and needs more stuff to watch, don't forget that Matt's got a ton of videos doing numerous hikes over the last however many years, and they can help fill the time until he's back on his feet.
So sorry to hear this, Matt. Makes sense what you decided to do. Can’t imagine the disappointment. Here’s to the rib/s healing fast to get you back out there.
You see what your followers will do for you. Trail magic, package deliveries...Bob is buying a new car just to pick you up. We're all here for you. Stay strong and get better quickly!
I’ve recently been following your journey because I want to hike the trail next year. I really hope your recovery goes smoothly and you can continue and finish the hike. Things happen in life and all we can do is move forward and keep pushing ourselves to finish what we started. Hope to see a new video soon.
I hope your rib is better by now. I’m glad that you went to your parents house, you will definitely have a better recovery there versus a hotel. Take care Matt!
Well, bummer. Maybe one bright side is that if there's anyone that can work through a recovery plan and get back out there, it's you! You got this! Best Wishes.
Hey buddy! Been watching you since the beginning of this hike and pulling and rooting you on to get better fast and keep on keepin on! Even with the pain. Life of thruhiking… best wishes!
Glad you’re safe and on the mend. It’s much to your credit that you took this break from a paved road since it is way easier to rejoin this trail from there. Tough way to get to know your body better.
So sorry to hear about your injury, hopefully you can complete more of your trek soon. I've been following since Cincinnati. Showed my hometown in a most favorable light! In Colorado, you got a sandwich in Bergen Park, a few miles from my sister's house! Hope you're back soon, will be missing my daily affirmation!
I always look forward to your posts and watch them first. I’m sad you had to come off the trail because it took a lot of pain and a bit of anxiety to force that. But today is likely the last time I can watch anything for the next few days. Just a few hours from being trashed by Milton. Leaving my wood frame home for shelter in a couple of hours. I hope I have a home to come back to.
I hope it's just a bruise. I've done exactly what you did and injured a rib. Luckily it was just a bruise and after a few days it was okay. Be safe and rest. Really enjoying your trips. So looking forward to your Yukon trip. That will be epic. Or just as epic as this hike.
That's gotta be tough on you having to back out, but I guess that's how life deals us sometimes. We'll miss the daily videos of you out on the trail, and can't wait for you get back. Get yourself all better!!
We just endured Hurricane Milton in Florida. Things will improve and you will too. We have enjoyed your hike since Delaware. We first started watching your videos when you were hiking on the AT up into Canada during Covid. We really enjoyed the Mississippi River canoe trip, except all the ticks. We are praying for you.
Even a bad bruise or slight tear of the connective tissue near/between the ribs, without a cracked bone, can make for a slow painful recovery. Hope you get better soon from that hitch in your giddyup.
Fell on Katahdin at the start of a southbound hike. Broke my ribs in 6 places. It’s a lot of pain. I’m so sorry about your fall. Took me 3 months to be able sleep lying down. Hope you recover quickly.
Of course I did. That’s what we do, right! Finished the AT for the second time. Working on the second hike of CDT now. Pneumonia knocked me off this summer. Sometimes I have lousy luck. But I always go back. Get better soon. I love the videos of you and Taters.
So sorry you have encountered another challenging "feather" to tuck into your "O-Kish" hat. Rest up, heal! We'll all be here rooting for you, and looking forward to your returning to the trail, if you can this year.
Survived Milton and tried to find you when power came back. No news might be bad news. I’m concerned and surely hope everything will be okay quickly. Guess I’ll go back to your first videos and start over. Maybe you’ll have time for a book.
I tend to struggle quite a bit with sitting still and waiting like this. Rehab is pretty much done though and I’m heading back to trail Monday once a few more things are wrapped up. You survive the hurricane ok?
Go into the nearest town, get X-rays so you know if it’s a bruise, or a break. Then you can make a decision. But by the time see this video, you’ve made your decision.
Hope the rib(s) are healed soon. Presume this will be at least a couple week break (sorry about that) before you move on to whatever else you do. Hoping for the best for you!
Broken or cracked ribs are painful. I've suffered a few....and they always take longer to heal than I liked. Hope you are feeling better and just a note to tell you how you are appreciated. I've been missing your posts but glad you are recuperating and not pushing on. Maybe a quick post to give us an update??
Oh, I'm so sorry. Bruised ribs hurt so much! My wife and I also had to quit our first thru hike because she bruised a rib and it took a long time to heal completely. I hope you feel better soon and can continue with better luck!
World class athletes, which is what elite thru hikers are, get injured like this regularly. They sit out games or seasons while they rehab. Part of the game. See you when you're ready to get back at it.
Dude I wish you all the best of luck getting out getting healed and back on the trail I know your pain inside and out Quite a few years ago climbing up a mountain I slipped fell ended up with a branch through my knee had to take the branch out put my leg into cold creek water that was coming down from the mountain just to numb it clean it at the same time so I can throw on a stitch or two so I can get back down the mountain and that was with a mountain bike yet and still had the ride home from there I still have the scar to this day from that hell
I've busted up my ribs a bunch. (leader falls on a swami belt, bike crashes, falling with a pack on...) It's a bugger and takes quite a while to heal. Hang in there Matt...Soldier on. Soldier on.
Sorry to comment this (see my entry yesterday) but you have to count your rehab time in weeks ! Got both (broken and bruised ribs) and after 2/3 weeks you can work again but it is still painful and uncomfortable . It took me 2/3 months to be completely painfree (the bruised one's take most time to heal up) . One wrong move or a sneeze and it's hell. Also the armstraps of the pack have a tendancy to be just on the painspot . Take your time to heal up and if the rest of the ADT is for the next season , well so be it .
Plus side this one is a lot more mild than the only other time I messed up a ridge. I can cough and sneeze without wishing to die. It’s mostly just laying down or flexing anytime I have to push or pull anything
@@FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes Great news , it's not a bruised or broken rib . In that case you messed up the membrane between the ribs , likely due to a piece of rock you fell on . With some luck it could be better after a weeek of two . Try putting some warm or cold ( try out what is best)compresses on the spot. Best of wishes for a speedy recovery.
So sorry to see this Matt. Rest, Relax, Recover, Reevaluate as needed, Rehab, and if you want to finish... Return. Remember, Eat good food, beer. See you on the other side. Cheers!
Dude, I feel for you. I've had to go to work with a pair of cracked ribs before. How you describe what you're feeling is exactly how I felt for 3-4 weeks *without* a pack on my back. I hope you just have a bruised rib, not a crack. Bruises just don't feel good, but they won't prevent you from doing anything as long as you keep something like ibuprofen in your system. Also I'm writing this as I watch and now know it sounds 100% like a crack. Sorry man, that was some bum luck.
All I know is I injured my ribs years ago during that Kaweah fall I talked about and it was so much worse than this. Still wishing I had a bit higher confidence in what I can manage at what stage here though. Sitting around while my last month and change of hiking season runs out is…frustrating
Hey man, real sorry to hear about the rib. Definitely painful, i know 1st hand. Im 55 and injuries tend to hang around way too long. I know ur younger so maybe itll heal up quicker. Take care,, really enjoy your videos.
Take some time Heal up is good idea. And now there's less hurry because you don't have time to get over the Sierra Nevada's mountains. Some of the basin and range gets snow but it better to do Nevada when it's cooler good luck.
The complication is I plan to come back and finish whatever is left after the Yukon in late August. If I leave too early I'll be coming back to the desert while it's still really warm out.
I posted about what was going on on Patreon. Instagram wise I'd been hoping to post a "Going back to trail" thing by now. Just been in limbo waiting for things to improve
What a drag.....I rode my bike off into some boulders whilst gazing at the scenery in the Ride the Rockies and banged up my ribs to the point it was hard to turn over in bed that night....finished the ride but wasnt fun.....only other time was after Whooping Cough.....my ribs were destroyed....took oxycodone for 2 weeks after that just to function.....ribs are the worst.....Sorry man.....NOW what are we all going to do every morning without your vids???
