A Walk Up Bakestall - Skiddaw's Best Kept Secret

  • This time we were in the Northern Lake District with a walk up Bakestall. It was the first day of our week long family holiday and this walk was only a mile from the cottage we were staying in near Bassenthwaite Lake.
Bakestall is a strange little hill and really only a satellite peak off the side of Skiddaw. However, it's a pesky little Wainwright as it's quite a long decent from Skiddaw's summit so it's often just tackled on it's own as there are much more popular routes up Skiddaw from the other sides. This was one of the reasons we wanted to do it while we were staying locally.
Despite being probably the least popular route up Skiddaw, this walk surprised us. It starts following along the Cumbrian Way, a nice easy walk though lovely fields that were full of new born lambs. Then the track passes by some spectacular waterfalls that really were impressive. From here it's a steep pull up to the summit of Bakestall which gives some great views North and over the small rounded hills in the area known as 'the back O'Skiddaw.'
We really enjoyed this walk and it also helped it was only a two minute drive back to our cottage after rather than the best part of two hours sat in the car driving back down the M6.
