A film of the hijacking was filmed onboard the actual Achille Lauro in 1990. Four years later, in 1994, the ship caught fire and sank 100km off the coast of Somalia with the loss of four lives. To this day, her wreck has never been found...
Italy probably knew about abbas involvement, but in the scheme of cold war Italian secret service they left him as to have some leverage if future terrorist attack happened (they did). Keep in mind that, it is said, Italy had a secret deal with PLO, Italy would allow the PLO to keep some arms storage in various Gladio holdouts in exchange of the promise that no terrorist attack would be conducted on Italian soil or against italians
If it's true that the Italians had a deal with the PLO, that would be other worldly levels of cowardice. Imagine if the U.S. made a deal with ISIS that would allow them to store weapons in exchange for not attacking us?
My german mom was part of the service/waitress staff on this ship when it made a week long test tour after its renovation, but decided to leave the ship and her position because of the poor conditions for the crew on board. She said that their uniforms were quite messy when they got them, the crew rooms were dirty and infested with cockroaches and most importantly she said that the male crew was very aggressive towards the female crew. So much so that she only ever walked the ship with another woman to be safer... So in the end she decided to leave ship at a port near Rome were the first passengers arrived and went back to Germany via train. She still remebers that her quite expensive beautycase was stolen at the train station lol Some time later she heard in the news about this incident. She still has photographs from the ship at that time. Iv'e sent her the video xD

The first time I saw this thumbnail on my UA-cam page, I didn't give it much thought. But the second or third time it came up, I realized that I vaguely remembered this happening and watched the video. I am guessing this happened in between and that is why I have a distant memory of it nearly 40 years later.
Abbas was eventually captured by the US during the Iraq invasion, he died in custody about a year later while they were deciding where/if he could be tried
As an aircraft nerd, I have just one thing about this video: at 18:40 you say two KA-6D air tankers take off from the carrier, but the silhouettes are the ones of soviet/russian Su-30 fighters. These are definitely not in the inventory of the US, and at the time of the Hijacking they werent even a research project in the soviet union. Other than that, great video!

For the sole reason that I am an American nevertheless. Sometimes I wished my country didn't meddle in international affairs as often as we do, but stories like this one make me feel good when it does happen. It seemed like the US was the only country that wasn't dragging its feet in, "diplomacy," but rather making active plans on getting $hit done and delivering results.
Then 9/11 showed you what Italy and other EU countries feared diring these "situations" There's a reason Italy was going for diplomacy, and that was because it preferred to use words rather than guns to resolve disputes (as stated in the Constitution) and because it didn't want to become a target of Arab terrorism/military incursions from the North African and Middle Eastern countries

Le fonti Italiane dicono l'opposto, ma va bene lo stesso .....
I may not be Italian but the fact that America tried to stick it's nose in this and tried to take control of a situation that didn't even involve them or concern them. And not to mention the Italians have every right to be upset with the Americans because it happened on an Italian ship and happened within Italy's borders. So they have every right to prosecute the hijackers in an Italian court and punish them by Italian law.
@@HardcoreLADFan1836 This situation involved America more than it involved any other country, and American was killed during the hijacking. You must not be good at listening.
The production quality is just awesome!
Italian part of the story: Stressed, delicate, and with many factors brought into the mix. Peak politics where you can tell politicians are trying to balance things for the best outcome.

Love this channel. Keep up the great videos
A film of the hijacking was filmed onboard the actual Achille Lauro in 1990. Four years later, in 1994, the ship caught fire and sank 100km off the coast of Somalia with the loss of four lives. To this day, her wreck has never been found...
Two lives. One for a heart attack, the other hit by an object that fell from the ship when he was already on the lifeboat.
Gaws damn you are good at this. This story could be a movie. Your production quality is excellent.
They did make a movie of it with Burt Lancaster in 1990, "voyage of terror" ,its in UA-cam.
Yeah sure that was the case lmao
If it's true that the Italians had a deal with the PLO, that would be other worldly levels of cowardice.
Imagine if the U.S. made a deal with ISIS that would allow them to store weapons in exchange for not attacking us?
@@davidsimon7436 I mean, in the context of 1980/90 italy it made sense and somehow worked, limiting terrorism and maintaining stability

@@Wesgo111deserved because they are the puppets of war criminals and they did the same thing that Germany did to them
My german mom was part of the service/waitress staff on this ship when it made a week long test tour after its renovation, but decided to leave the ship and her position because of the poor conditions for the crew on board.
She still remebers that her quite expensive beautycase was stolen at the train station lol
Some time later she heard in the news about this incident.
She still has photographs from the ship at that time.
Iv'e sent her the video xD
I wasn't aware of the aftermaths of the Achille Lauro hijacking until now. P.S. 18:30 the moment you know you totally screwed up your life - an aircraft carrier comes after you.
Great video, very well produced, I initially expected you to have a lot more subscribers! Keep up the quality work and the numbers will flow in.

The animation and story telling is unparalleled. So freaking good
The only problem is the music..
@@TpbrautSHUT I LOVED THE MUSIC
@@myatyuwu7303 nah the music is really plain.
@@Tpbraut That's... the point. It's just a background hum the fill in the gaps between sentences or w/e.
EDIT: To be clear, I mean, if the _background_ music stole the show from the actual video, that's a serious statement regarding either the quality of the video/story or the quality of the background music.
LEMMiNO does it way better, and is more informed.
Amazing quality and detail! I love this channel, I hope you keep it up.
everything from the graphics and editing to the thorough research done make me believe many, many hours were spent making such a high quality video. It surprises me you only have 69k subs.
120K subs when I was recommended this 1 month after your comment. I subbed. So we will see how fast he grows
The first time I saw this thumbnail on my UA-cam page, I didn't give it much thought. But the second or third time it came up, I realized that I vaguely remembered this happening and watched the video. In 1985, I graduated high school and later in the summer went to USMC boot camp at Parris Island. I am guessing this happened in between and that is why I have a distant memory of it nearly 40 years later.
3:39 The PLO had no legal presence in the West Bank and Gaza in those days. They only attained degree of self‐rule following the 1993 Oslo Accords.
Therefore the term “semi-respectable” being used at 13:20.
This editing and animations give huge Lemmino vibes, its really beautiful ❤
I really love the level of detail and research in your videos. I hope you make more, may your channel grow in size and respect.

Such a well made video! You deserve more than 65.5K subs! Keep it up! :)
As an American, I understand that sometimes we come off as brutish and forceful, but if I were ever on a foreign cruise ship that was hijacked, just the thought of my country doing everything in its power to deliver me home safely gives me chills.
Then 9/11 showed you what Italy and other EU countries feared diring these "situations"
There's a reason Italy was going for diplomacy, and that was because it preferred to use words rather than guns to resolve disputes (as stated in the Constitution) and because it didn't want to become a target of Arab terrorism/military incursions from the North African and Middle Eastern countries
US has killed millions of innocent people across world, destroyed many nations after 2nd world war..
I just wish US people would suffer the same fate , not from outside forces but within..
No nation has more blood then US after 2nd world war..
The brute militry and economic power.. the US has made life of billions of people suffering...
I hope one day US pays the price. US is evil Empire run on blood/military industrial complex.
But this was 1985 sadly this wouldn't happen nowadays, look at all the Americans that go missing and get killed in Mexico each year.
This gotta be one of the most tone deaf comments I’ve seen in a while. “Sucks that my country regularly suppresses the autonomy and safety of the rest of the world, but it’s great that I personally benefit from it 🤩”

Dear IMPERIAL, Thank you for a well researched and developed piece of work. What was most interesting to me was the raw power and depth of resources the US was willing commit to this. If it has been an Israeli citizen that had been killed, and unable to prosecute the hijackers, the Mossad would have researched for a year or so, and the Mista'arvim would quietly, and inexpensively killed the Hijackers and anyone close to them.

Mr. Klinghoffer was laid to rest in the town I was working at the time. I was stationed at the cemetery, and was surprised by the modest turnout. It was a dignified ceremony, but relatively private. I sometimes visited his grave during the remaining years I worked there. RIP.
